pre-amp is placed between a receiver and an amp...

pre-amp splits into various categories...

Line-driver- used to boost the low receiver output voltage

EQ- used to boost or cut down certain Hz range in the music to give it more natural and linear sound...

electronic crossover- splits Hz range for different drivers

Decoder- decodes the sound so tht every speaker is playing different sound or playing at a different time... or decodes 5.1 channel audio etc etc...

hope i answer your question...

cheers...
