Still no news on the gx50
That the problem of having different products team for prepaid and postpaid
*
I’m also keen to move to the prepaid gx38 plan as it has a higher speed cap compared to my current postpaid gx50.

Went to the umobile service center to change from postpaid to prepaid but was told to do it after the 20th since my gx50 line is only 5 days old. Registered on 8 June.

Dunno SC tipu me or not.

Thinking to move from GX50 (unlimited data at 5mbps, unlimited local calls, postpaid) to GX38 (unlimited data at 6mbps, unlimited local calls, prepaid). Other than postpaid vs prepaid, is there any other restriction or limitation anyone knows about?

I think GX50 is speed cap at 6mbps same as gx38. Only different is the hotspot data allocation.
*
Hotspot allocation is unnecessary for me. I'm sure I saw 5mbps speed cap for gx50 though.

Umobile advertises gx50 with an rm40 monthly fee for the first 12 months so I guess only rm2 separates gx38 and gx50 for now.

There was a 5Mbps speed cap for GX50 in U Mobile official website before 12 June.

But they have removed it on that day.
Now nobody knows what is the speed of GX50 unless the GX50 user do a speed test and let us know here.
*
I'm on GX50 as previously mentioned and speedtest usually gives result of 2.5mbps down and 2.5mbps up (3 bars of 4G).

My Maxis postpaid (work line) gets around 4mbps down and 4mbps up (2 bars of 4G).

Thank the heavens for 500mbps time fibre connection at home.

You are right bro, there is no mention of the 5mbps speed cap on GX50. There seems to be no difference between GX50 and GX68 other than price.

Same for me. Will make a decision by end of this week.

so I just try for research and my own test. bought Suftshark from shoppe and running it on my phone with GX68

Pro: able to watch youtube at 1080hd without buffering at all.
cons : battery kinda high as the apps keep running all time.
*
How much was the surfshark VPN package?

I'm using smartdnsproxy vpn (no dedicated app, need to install openvpn and import OVPN file on the phone). Cost me usd35 for 2 years.

Didn't try YouTube but Netflix US content runs smooth in 1080p.

Am on gx50 plan.

Maybe consider another telco if gaming is a priority?

Am thinking to terminate my gx50 line after only a week. Went cycling today and popped into the neighborhood Starbucks for a drink.

Damn, the line was totally unusable despite showing full bars of 4g.

Maybe the area is having network issue? You should give them a call and get them to fix it.
*
Lazy to call. Will report via the app.

Did you use the free WiFi at Starbucks? Maybe Umobile didn't cover the blindspot there because they assumed people would use Starbucks WiFi to enable their VoWiFi coverage there?
*
I never use the WiFi at SB as I prefer to use my own data plan.

Stood in front of the cashier for almost 5 minutes before I could login to the SB app.

I’m sure umobile works wonderfully for many people but for my use case, maybe it’s not for me.

tribalism is everywhere i guess.

ios vs android fanboys flinging shit at each other, now looks like we even have telco fanbois and detractors ha ha.

chill everyone, it's just a cellular service provider. anyway, am gonna try the xpax rm35 unlimited package next.

don't need to test maxis as my work phone is on maxis with 70GB data package. maxis works well when you see 4g, but as soon as it drops to 3g everything comes to a stop.

Terminated my GX50 today, it was fun while it lasted.

Bought an Xpax SIM pack for RM10, signed up for the RM35 unlimited data plan (3mbps). All is well again, streamed youtube on my phone with the screen off while driving from south of the island (qb mall) back to the north with zero dropouts.

stopped by at starbucks tg tokong, the data connection was great.

may consider umobile again in a year.

Celcom in Penang do have high availability for outdoor 4G signals. Just speeds is slower compared to other states.
*
Don't need super high speeds personally. Good coverage and consistent 5mbps can fulfill my current needs. Hope xpax can upgrade from present speed cap of 3mbps to 5-6mbps at least.

I have a 500mbps fibre connection at home for big downloads anyway.

Umobile offers relatively more for the same or cheaper price, was really hoping that it was a fit for me.

Outside my home or office, I'd normally disable WiFi because the main cause of battery drain is due to the phone behavior which keeps searching and seeking new wifi hotspots around non stop.

Only turn on your WiFi when you're certain the place where you have already logged on previously and remembered by your phone.
*
Is this really necessary these days? I think the recent versions of iOS and android balance battery consumption and wireless radios pretty well.

Both my iPhone and OnePlus phones have data, wifi, Bluetooth and location always enabled. I guess I'm just lazy and prefer convenience eg. open grab app and location is already working, turn on my Bluetooth headset and it connects immediately to my phone, reach home and wifi automatically connects..

Or you can try disabling the auto search/WiFi access point feature which is the main cause of the battery drain.

No worries, have no issue with battery life at the moment.
