I have Yoodo and Digi numbers on grace period (inactive) and VoLTE still work on both lines without data.

Perhaps U Mobile is different.

Maybe, it's because some callers are still using non-VoLTE smartphones or have not activated VoLTE on their phones = these callers may not be able to call you via VoLTE.

Why do you want to turn-off VoLTE ?
Do you want to make a voice call over 2G ?

What is VoLTE?

VoLTE stands for Voice over Long-Term Evolution or Voice over LTE. VoLTE offers the possibility to voice call via the LTE/4G* mobile network.

Previously, 4G was limited to surfing the Internet. When it came to calls, your phone would automatically switch to 3G or 2G. You may recall a few seconds of delay before the recipient's phone rang. Thanks to VoLTE, that delay is gone.

On a 2G or 3G network, calls and data are separated and cannot work simultaneously. For example, during a phone call on a 2G network, any incoming text messages at that moment will only arrive after you’ve terminated your phone call. On a 4G LTE network, both calls and data work in unison, meaning that a text message will arrive instantly even during a call.

*The terms 4G and LTE refer to the same technology and can be used interchangeably. ...

What is the difference between VoLTE and VoWiFi?

VoLTE and VoWiFi both allow you to make voice calls over the Internet. What’s more, both technologies make calls through your phone’s calling application without the need for third-party apps. The main difference is that Wi-Fi Calling relies on a connection via Wi-Fi, and VoLTE relies on a data connection from your operator. If both VoWiFi and VoLTE are enabled, your phone will automatically decide which service is the most optimal to ensure the best call quality possible.

@ svchia, ... Maybe your celcos, ie Yoodo and DiGi, give free nominal Internet data for VoLTE calls during the Prepaid's grace period.

Yes, during the 3G shutdown time (end 2022.?), my non-VoLTE phone on U Mobile received voice calls that were very broken = practically unusable, and many phone-users could not receive TACs or OTPs (which are 2G SMSes, not 4G IMS) from their banks or websites. IOW, at that time, the fallback to 2G was quite faulty. A few months later and nowadays, no more such voice-calling problems on my non-VoLTE phone.

Funny that prepaid is a better deal than postpaid...

Why would anyone even use postpaid?
*
a few reasons

contract plan to get a phone
higher priority on the network (unlimited users would be throttled first when load is high)
5g access
bundle with fiber
dont want to deal with the hassle of reloading

Afaik, VoLTE or Vo5G and IMS (not SMS) requires 4G/5G Mobile Internet data whereas 2G voice calls and SMS do not require such Mobile Internet data.

Some smartphone users who have Home Fiber Internet and VoIP fixed/immobile phone lines (eg 03- XXXXXXX for Selangor), subscribe to the cheapest prepaid Mobile phone plans and topup only (eg RM5 every 3 months) just to keep their Mobile phone line valid or active, in order to be able to receive voice calls or SMS via 2G. The VoLTE setting may interfere with the receiving of 2G voice calls.
....... Hence, these users often ask about maximum validity period given by the celcos.
.

if you are connected to wifi you could make calls via VoWiFi

umobile shut down 3g for few days only

network became basically unusable because 4g congested with calls and it kept dropping but umobile had nothing to fall back to

then umobile enabled 3g again, and now it is the best network in the country in terms of call quality

like before jendela only

volte calls can still switch to 3g network without dropping call when out of 4g network

only caveat is 3g network no internet for umobile since jendela

just for calls

you can set your phone to 3g only and use umobile extensive 3g network but for calls only

I doubt you are correct that U Mobile has re-enabled 3G, which is against government/MCMC orders, .......

https://www.u.com.my/en/about-us/newsroom/p...-to-deliver-202
.... Celcom and U Mobile have successfully collaborated through a commercial 2G domestic roaming nationwide agreement between period of 2007 to 2012, and 2019 to date.

https://technave.com/gadget/Malaysia-s-3G-n...%20March%202022. - Malaysia's 3G network shut down has been extended (from end 2021) to the end of March 2022 - 25 Feb 2022

https://myjendela.my/en-GB/FAQ-and-Glossary...g-Of-3G-Network - The Sunsetting Of 3G Network
1. What is the 3G Network sunsetting?

3G sunsetting is the gradual retirement of all the 3G network in Malaysia by mobile network operators (MNOs), namely Celcom Axiata Berhad (“Celcom”), Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“Digi”), Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”) and U Mobile Sdn Bhd (“U Mobile”) by December 2021. The completion of 3G network sunsetting will then enable the MNOs to provide faster and better 4G experience.

U Mobile has a 2G RAN Agreement with Celcom since 2019. Maybe the fallback from U Mobile non-VoLTE 4G to Celcom voice-call 2G was problematic in early 2022.
.
Yes, the "3G only" or "WCDMA" setting for my U Mobile phone plan has no Internet access = I needed to change back to 4G LTE/WCDMA/GSM for Internet access.

U Mobile should update it's 3G Sunset FAQ page to reflect it's 3G situation, .......

https://www.u.com.my/en/personal/support/fa...work-retirement
When will the 3G sunset take place?

The 3G sunset will take place nationwide and in 3 phases, with the aim of shutting down all 3G networks by the end of 2021.

Phase 1 was the planning stage, which was completed in Q3-Q4 2020.

Phase 2 is the implementation stage. In this stage, the number of 3G networks in Malaysia will gradually be reduced, until all of them are shut down by the end of 2021. At the same time, all telcos will also improve their 4G network to provide wider coverage and higher data speeds.

Phase 3 is planned to take place in Q1-Q2 2022. In this stage, telcos will monitor their network optimisation, network performance and customer experience.

hotspot usage will deduct from 5gb hotspot quota first, after hotspot quota exhausted, hotspot usage will deduct from remaining 60/100/1000gb main quota.
