Saw this thread and read till the end of the thread. Awesome sharing platform.

The starting point of learning Japanese language is due to anime.

After that I have studied Japanese during college times. Attended to language center and attended exams for both N4 and N3 and embarrassed to say didnt passed. Failed at listening as couldnt pickup the keywords.

When I start in working life, studying Japanese become difficult as not enough time.

Since then, I make myself to use Windows OS Japanese Edition since Windows ME! All Windows OS, I installed MUI Language Pack change 100% to Japanese. But keyboard still english! Wanted to get a Japanese keyboard.

Even my office laptop also I change to Japanese.

Nowadays I listen to live japanese radio using TuneIn Radio channels. Watch Live Japanese paid TV Streaming during commuting to work and after work at home.

I CBA cause I use my PC to work and all types of japanese IMEs are just arses to use  ohmy.gif
like they aint as direct as English IME and definitely 2 decades behind of Chinese IMEs in terms of convenience and shortcut keys

I have seen those japanese keyboard with beautiful kana etchings on them, always want to buy one but I'm yet to learn to type with kanas instead of romanji so I gave up hahaha

For my jap content consumption I'm still stuck at Netflix and chinese-subbed dramas and variety shows, yet to go that far.
Sorry.. What CBA means? Lol

I'm currently working in a known Japanese organization. Hence even though my company laptop is English version, I just installed the MUI. Some of my colleagues was given Japanese keyboard laptop edition, so our MIS change the language from Japanese to English. Ahh, should have swapped the laptop, *facepalm*

I do use Google translate.

Quite couple of times tempted to buy the Japanese keyboard while I was in Japan but skipped as not top priority, but when come back to KL, regret didn't buy. Ha ha ha.

I do still have all the Japanese text book, Minna no Nihongo and the exercises. But kept somewhere already..

Always wanted to return back to study, but need to do a placement test... Kind of rusty and don't want to start back from ground zero.. Huhuhu

Netflix show Japanese content?

I watched all without subtitles right now even though not 100% I understand what they are saying. At least to catch their keywords.

In terms of speaking, totally not good as no one to practice speaking with.. :'(

Yeah, Netflix got quite a lot of Japanese contents haha.

For example, Terrance house. Where the hosts will have to guess what's really happening in the conversation and what they really means. (Due to Japanese extremely reserved and good in hiding their opinions etc..)

*
I see. Netflix Japan?

Terrance house. Quite interesting. Indeed the reserved conversation among them.

This paid Japanese IPTV streaming I'm currently watching. Watch live and up to 14 days of catch up service playback.

Great to hear that, welcome to the thread!

There's no need to be embarrassed for failing. Everyone have their own Achilles Heel in the examination... I'm not good with listening as well. Sometimes the characters speak fast, use difficult words, or the situation is confusing. If it's for examination, train more through listening to conversations for mock exams etc. That's what I'm planning to do this time for N4... bought a book on listening so that I can practice on the area.

Japanese keyboard wub.gif always using work laptop so I don't dare to change the language. Later my IT guys come and do some update/ backup etc they'll have problem (me too) hahahaha
Thank you!

Nowadays I stop buying Manga in kinokuniya. Even anime magazines. Back then I have spent a lot. But recently just ordered サクラ大戦 Vol. 7 manga from kino as my No. 1 favorite anime/game. Hardcore fan.

Right now mostly I self learning:-
1) watching paid IPTV streaming.
2) My home PC and laptop is in Japanese MUI.

Hehehehe, I kam cheng with my IT guys so I have no problems with my office laptop.

Next year planning to visit to Tokyo. Still thinking whether necessary to get a Japanese keyboard or not...

Yay! Trip to Japan.

Go both then. Hakone and Kamakura on different days. But if want to see Fuji san, not sure good time or not as seems rainy days in Japan now..

While Kamakura, visit Big Buddha, Enoshima : anime pilgrimage where Slamdunk opening scene at that place.

I've been using Google's own Japanese keypad for my android phone, and also Google Japanese IME input for my PC. Quite simple and straightforward. Disabled the romanji option and it feels a bit like typing Chinese back in those days. Hahaha That kind of phone keypads on old Nokia I think?
When you guys talk about japanese keyboard, is it a physical keyboard or a software/overlay? Curious about that.

Some good tips on preparing for JLPT.

The listening part can be a killer huh.

Part of me wants to finish the whole 25 chapters of Minna No Nihongo before I explore the children's books apps and news. Part of me want to check them out now. Haha But only got 1-2 hours per day to study, so have to pick wisely.
*
You using this.?
Attached Image

For pc/Laptop, I using their Microsoft IME. Happened where, not sure why the IME settings was changed to typing hiragana/katana instead of romaji. So when type S =さ, instead of sa = さ.. So have to disable as not Japanese keyboard.
Attached Image

Great tips. But don't think will go for jlpt soon.

Kino in Malaysia is expensive, thus buying from them is $$$$. Nais, which month are you planning to go?
Well, I knew about it but just don't want the hassle buying from online and ship as books are heavy when you buy a lot. Basically the extra $$$$ is including shipping costs, handling of delivery and the hassle to avoid customs checks.

Usually I bought online (Amazon.jp, Buyee.jp) or bidding from yahoo auction via buyee.jp for items that I cannot order in Malaysia.

Thinking of end of April till beginning of May 2019. I will be going alone to Tokyo. This will be my 2nd time going by myself. Quite fun when you travel alone except for theme parks. Itinerary wise, kind of repeating but will think of new places.

Whoa, very nice. I am considering backpacking alone too, but not sure if it's wise since it's my first time going overseas. Some more was adventurous , wanted to plan to go to the less urban areas.
*
For 1st timers, best is to go together with friends/family or either with Tour to familiar with the area.

I'm more on towards shopping kind of person. Hence Tokyo area will be ideal for me, eventhough hectic. I love to stay in Ikebukuro. It's really a nice place to stay. Easy access to find food, shopping, anime shops, Donki, Book off! And etc.

If want to visit cultural places, I rather go to Kansai area.

I never stay in backpackers before (don't fancy sharing bed bunking). Therefore I stay in a ryokan hotel (tatami) style. Which I have stayed for 3 times.

To improve the listening skills in exam, can try listen NHK news everyday.
Its very helpful

Actually you are correct. Listening to news is better way to sharpen your listening skills.

Once in a while I have record live FB and post it up. Example of link below.
1.5 hrs of Japanese News on Typhoon No. 21

Recorded Live FB yesterday from TV Asahi.

Japanese Variety Show on traveling. Below is the link.

Agree on the shipping fees and all. If e-books can help just as much, I think I won't hesitate to buy them for the convenience; but anyway to each his/ her own.

Yet to do my solo to Japan. I think I'll prefer going on my own as I can wander around with having to worry about others or arrange the time. Safety side, there's really nothing much to worry about when it comes to Japan. It's only worrisome when more hands are needed - eg. a friend to help hold your bag for a while, or a company to look after the luggage while you run down or across to ask for help/ directions etc. And would be nice to have someone help take photos, vice versa.

Friends and I kept bumping into this Singaporean who was there for a backpacking trip. We first met him at Kawaguchiko station. Then we bumped into him in Asakusa, and once more in Yoyogi Park. And to think that Tokyo is big. So anyway we ended up having dinner with him and one last dinner before we go off. He said it was lonely. Although it's not bad but also boring as there's no one to talk to. He would get home and do his own stuff. In comparison, the few of us would get back to accommodation and turn on TV. We'll have snacks while laughing at the show. While the ryokan has no TV, we'll go for onsen. After onsen we'll go back to our room and have some snacks with tea (ryokan style places usually gives you a set of tea cups & pot) while chit chatting. It was very fun with them around. Doing a solo would be desirable yet seem a little empty sometimes, without people to chit chat. If it's not a city area/life, the places close early - easily around 5pm - so there's nothing much to do but to go back to the room.
Safety is 100% safe when you in JAPAN ONLY! hahaha biggrin.gif

Especially when you in Akihabara and Nakano Broadway, need to be alone. Can spend more on your own time browsing around.

My last solo trip I will go out around 9am++ and will only be back after 10pm++. Everyday! flex.gif

Visited my Japanese friend and also make new Japanese friends as well. Actually they want to speak english too. LOL

My previous trips, I only used Google maps for train directions/schedule and walking. Very accurate!

For Bullet train schedule, I will use hyperdia.

Coming back, found this good resource for Kanji learning:-
http://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/kanji.html

They even have a list of Kanji that appeared in the previous JLPT examination. Download is free.

2級(N2)の漢字リスト (PDF, 14 pages)
List of kanji appearing in past JLPT Level 2 test (1992-2003)

1級(N1)の漢字リスト (PDF, 18 pages)
List of kanji appearing in past JLPT Level 1 test (1992-2003)

Can access these via link above. Very resourceful page biggrin.gif

Good links!

Honestly I still struggling to create a sentence or phrase in Japanese as need to think the correct grammar to use.

Ever since have Google translate, I will try to type in English then translate to Japanese. Then I read on Japanese whether it make sense or not. From there, tweak the Japanese grammar so it make sense.

Especially in social media where Japanese fond of using Twitter.

Interesting. So there's a Japanese language interest thread here.

Here's an idea - quite a few Karaoke places here have Japanese songs. Ever considered having a Japanese only karaoke outing? Its one way to practice and build your confidence.
*
Which Karaoke places have Japanese songs? Does it have actual Japanese writings? As I know some of the Karaoke which have Japanese songs is not in japanese writings.
