I was wondering if the aim is only to understand Japanese/speaking what level would be enough? N3? Purpose would be like to watch anime/jap movies without English subs and not used for business or work related.
*
N3 you can understand basic animation. Probably not the whole conversation or what's happening but you could roughly gauge from some of the keywords.

In order to understand animation/ movies/ dramas, vocabulary has to be extensive and you're able to recognize the changes in vocab.

For example, the word "morai-masu" 貰います (to receive) is used in different form depending on the situation and structure of the sentence. It's also "morau", "moratte", "moratta", "morao", "morae" etc. The form changes in accordance to situation and context ie. speaking of future, past, current, one's desire etc etc. If you're only able to recognize the polite form ie. "morai-masu" then its not possible to catch what the characters are saying when they use a different form of the word.

Not to intimidate but managing expectations. These are all the forms that the word "morai-masu" can be changed into:

No doubt you learn them layer by layer as you progress in class.

However when you mention the JLPT, even if you're not learning for business/ work, the syllabus encompasses all and it's definitely more academic-driven. If your purpose is to watch animation, chances is, look for something more casual or conversational imo.

Not sure if something like this could meet your purpose but it could be a good start:

Guys, any suggestions that I should go for class or just online self study? Thinking of taking unpaid leave for the class, business slow down tremendously since the pandemic. Maybe this is good time for some personal interest 😅
By the way, any evening class that I can go for? KL area

I'm studying Japanese language too, using textbooks, podcasts, youtube videos specifically on reading/listening comprehension, grammar structures, kanji usage, vocab/grammar nuance, intonation on pronunciation, difference of level of keigo on conversation etc.

I am very curious how to achieve all these learning structures above by watching anime/drama and reading the subtitles ?

1. Depends on your intention. Really wanna master the language or only to watch anime?

2. Classes - refer to PAGE #1, POST #1. List of Japanese languages classes in Malaysia is there.

3. You can start learning from basic through [Minato] “Hirogaru Self-study Course (Vol. 1) --> link on Page 1, Post 1. I'll recommend completing the Hiragana & Katakana course first. These 2 are vital. Without the ability to read the characters, it's not possible to progress.

This is very tough. I have issues with kaiwa as well.
There's a website that allows you to connect with local Japanese to converse. You can look for someone who can speak some English, to help guide you on the conversation. They mostly use Skype.

Many options here:

Anime contains a lot of improper Japanese, mixture of slang and improper grammar. We're actually discouraged from watching it.
As for drama - depends on what drama. The ones on NHK is usually fine lol.

lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif through the power of one's own innate self-learning.

On a serious note, agree that it's pretty much impossible to learn proper Japanese through animation. It's possible to learn some vocabularies but proper sentence structure and form changes that i mentioned - impossiburu.

I will take advise from kudoshi, self study!
My intention—>Hoping 1 day can really travel around Japan like locals! I had covered most places around Japan over pass few years, I mean places that foreigner will go. It’s time for me to explore more, without some basic Japanese, it’s quite impossible.
I just found this useful site, how to memorize hiragana https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/
