QUOTE(Trebuchetti @ Jan 2 2020, 06:54 PM) Any good online courses on learning Japanese for beginners? Sorry, didn't know you tagged me haha. Next time use ---> [ @username ] <--- format for tagging (without the spacing on both sides)~ Some recommend Nihongo-Pro while others mention iTalki. What's your advice, sweet_pez? Your purpose of studying Japanese will be...? a) Academic reason? Plan to sit for JLPT exam in future? Or, b) Merely for leisure/ fun to be able to understand a little or read some of the texts/ characters/ browse sites etc If a, then will need to adopt a more serious and disciplined approach if you're doing self study. If b, then it's alright to start anyhow you're comfortable with. Basic/ first step: It doesn't really matter pro nihongo book or not, as long as it's easy for you. First off learn the basic on how to write and read the Hiragana and Katakana. Also get started on basic/ simple Kanji characters - a lot of Apps can help you with this. Forming sentences: When you're ready to form sentences, that's when you need some sort of reference/ materials because that's when particles, grammars, vocabs etc kicks in. I started with Minna no Nihongo book and i find it useful as reference. But it's not everything. Option 1 - with Minna no Nihongo book or others Imo if you wish to use this book, find somewhere to /koff download /koff or purchase the book. Subsequently use YouTube as one of your main guide to get started such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi2AeYO-g8E There are a lot of online tutorials, videos etc. Additionally you can also search for similar groups in Facebook Groups. Option 2 - without a book With this, you'll want to look around serious for resources that can help to guide you step by step. At least with a textbook/ guidebook, there's a step-by-step approach to learning. Without one, it'll be randomly searching for materials. I honestly find this site very resourceful and useful: https://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/ Scroll down to [Free Study Materials] to get started. They have some free trial lessons for online too: https://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/online.html Navigate around the site, there are various sections and free resources to look up. Ask away if you have any other questions This post has been edited by sweet_pez: Jan 6 2020, 04:26 PM |

The syllabus/ examination is presumably very different compared to JLPT You can Google Business Japanese Test for more information. As per title, its business Japanese so you will be using a lot of sonkeigo and kenjougo. The exam is computer based and time to take the exam is quite flexible too. I'm gonna take jlpt N1 this July, if pass only will proceed with bjt. Meanwhile wanna find out how to prepare for bjt haha. Failed n1 twice and gonna try again this July. Hopefully can pass. 🙏 |

Thanks for the advice, sweet_pez.
One more thing, is ILOHA in Bangsar good for beginners? Or are there other IRL Japanese language classes that you'd personally recommend? Maybe ICLS or Japan Foundation? I understand that it's "all up to me" & "practice X3" but I'd love to have a teacher who's passionate, fun and understanding. As for what purpose, at least for watching anime, reading manga or buying stuff on Japanese sites. This post has been edited by Trebuchetti: Jan 7 2020, 12:21 AM |

QUOTE(bookleaf @ Jan 6 2020, 09:30 PM) QUOTE(Trebuchetti @ Jan 7 2020, 12:17 AM) Thanks for the advice, sweet_pez. Centres/ language classes are dependent on your location. I'll suggest somewhere easily accessible for you and where timetable is comfortable for you. One of my friend studies in Japan Foundation - their speed is slower, less academic and more focused on activities/ interaction. Also they do not use the Minna no Nihongo book - they're using their own textbook (not sure which/ what book). No doubt having a teacher is the best Sorry guys, the tagging no space ya. I can't type it out otherwise it'll turn into a tag and you can't view the format. So this is an image file of the format: ![]() |

Cover up to 50 lessons (yellow book by the old standards) should be sufficient. There might be some keigo questions in the exam if i'm not mistaken so you'll need to know them at least![]() |

Hi all, just want to do a self-plug here. I'm currently working in ILOHA Culture Centre as an admin. Just took JLPT N3 last December, currently waiting for my results. Studied here for around 2 years already since they gave me free lessons for working here. If you guys are looking to join Japanese classes conducted by native Japanese instructors, please feel free to enquire. We have classes from Wednesdays to Sundays, next intake for part-time courses (once a week) will be in early to mid February. For intensive courses (5 times a week), next intake will be in March. If you have the time, do drop by and look for me and I can explain everything in detail to you. If you guys have any questions at all, can pm me or reply to me. Will reply if I have the time.

QUOTE(nsg86 @ Jan 9 2020, 12:46 PM) ooh, I'm using japanese version ... guess that's translate to minna-no nihongo 中級 I is it? ... thanks man Generally speaking if you are using the original Minna no Nihongo textbook, Elementary I (初級 I, covers chapter 1-25): JLPT N5; Elementary II (初級 II, covers chapter 26-50): JLPT N4; Intermediate I (中級 I、covers chapter 1-12): JLPT N3; Intermediate I (中級 II、covers chapter 13-25): JLPT N2; As far as i know Minna no Nihongo doesn't really cover anything beyond N2, for N1 you'll have to use other textbooks. Do take note that the above should not be followed strictly, I've seen cases where they include grammar and vocab from a higher level (ie. when you take JLPT N5, they might include things from JLPT N4, but not much, maybe just 2-3 questions). |
