want to ask for commando glock 5 and raven, is there any problem for the i5-8400 / gtx1050ti variant like cooling, throttling, etc..

for the specs i wanted, y530 would cost me 4.5k after 15% discount, while raven and glock 5 would cost me 4k. significantly lower cost.. so im thinking to get either one..

of this 3 laptops, which is the best in terms of cooling/durability/after sales?? is y530 worth the additional 500?

No problem for the i5+1050TI variant (check my review)

Cooling performance (after undervolt+repaste):
CPU - Glock 5>Y530=Raven
GPU - Y530>Raven=Glock 5
Fan speed - Y530 (no manual tuning though)>Raven=Glock 5

Durability: You mean exterior build quality? If that's the case, Raven>Glock 5>Y530 (all are good)

Aftersales: Y530 has onsite warranty, Raven and Glock 5 need to bring back to shop (optional onsite also need to be sent back to shop)

Which Y530 spec you're looking at? Also, what's your budget? No preference on weight and battery life?
*
hmm u mention durability/exterior build quality y530 u rate it last among the 3. really? cause from youtube videos i see, for me looks like y530 had the best build quality among them lol. maybe video vs real life feeling is different idk..

this is the spec im looking at for y530/glock5/raven. no concern for weight and batt life. i think all 3 should be able to at least do 2 hours gaming and about 4 hours if not gaming right?

Processor : Intel Core i5-8300H Processor (8MB Cache, Up to 4.0 GHz)
Total Memory : 16GB(8+8) DDR4 2666MHz SODIMM
Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB DDR5
Display : 15.6" (396mm) FHD (1920x1080), anti-glare, LED backlight, IPS, 300 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 72% gamut, 144Hz
Hard Drive 1 : 1TB Hard Disk Drive, 7200RPM, 2.5", SATA3
Hard Drive 2 : 128GB Solid State Drive M.2 2242 PCIe
WiFi Wireless LAN Adapters : Lenovo Wireless (2x2)AC/A/B/G/N,

so base on above specs, lenovo after 15% discount is 4.5k while glock 5 and raven comes to about 4k..

so after doing some research online, many seems to advice stretching out the budget slightly to get the gtx1060 instead of the 1050/1050ti as it is a significantly better card and more "future proof".
is it true that the 1060 is a way better card than even the 1050ti?

initially i was looking at y530, i5 + gtx1080ti + 8gb ram + 128gb ssd + 1tb hdd + 144hz panel. after 15% discount the price was 4.2k..

looking at the specs of the legion y530 below. exactly 4.5k after 15% discount.
i dont mind to up my budget to 4.5k cause i wanna buy something that can last me for a long term usage..
wonder if this is a solid deal or are there better laptop suggestions out there?

Processor : Intel Core i5-8300H Processor (8MB Cache, 2.30GHz)
Total Memory : 8GB DDR4 2666MHz SODIMM
Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 192bit
Display : 15.6"FHD (1920 x 1080) LED, IPS, Anti-glare, 300nit, 144Hz
Hard Drive : 256GB Solid State Drive M.2 PCIe

i also checked out illegear's raven for similar specs, is about 4.4k for the i5 + gtx1060 + 8gb ram + 144hz panel. the diff is its 120gb ssd + 1tb sshd combo, and it gets a mechanical keyboard.

also, is the i5 + gtx1060 a good combo? or an i7 is needed? i dont use any rendering software or adobe, etc.. but i do use it for programming and sometimes running some virtual machines, but not those very intensive VMs i think..

1060 is significantly better than 1050TI

If you're buying Y530 from Lenovo website, I suggest you to opt for HDD only and upgrade SSD by your own

i5-8300H is a decent chip if you don't always run workload that requires much multi core performance

Affordable but good 1060 laptops:
Commandos Carbine 5 (Clevo N950TP6)
Lenovo Legion Y530 customize
Illegear Raven (TongFang GJ5CN6E)

hi. as you can see from the image, have to select a SSD. only HDD is an option. so i will select the 256gb ssd + no hdd instead.
Attached Image

what surprise me the most after doing comparisons.. i found out that for a similar build between different y530, you can get a 1060 rather than 1050ti for a mere 300 ringgit more only

y530 = i5 + gtx 1050ti + 8gb ram + 128gb ssd + 1tb hdd + 144hz ips panel = rm 4.2k after student discount
y530 = i5 + gtx 1060 + 8gb ram + 256gb ssd + 144hz ips panel = rm 4.5k after student discount << you get a 1060 card for a mere 300 ringgit, although no hdd but the m.2 256gb nvme ssd more than makes up for it i guess.

raven = i5 + gtx 1050ti + 8gb ram + 120gb ssd + 1tb sshd + 144hz panel = rm 3.8k
raven = i5 + gtx 1060 + 8gb ram + 120 gb ssd + 1tb sshd + 144hz panel = rm 4.4k

as you can see, for the 1060 build the price between y530 and raven is about similar to each other specs wise. so choosing between y530 or raven would then fall upon other factors like laptop design, cooling performance, etc etc.

but for the 1050ti build, the raven and also glock 5 is way cheaper at around 3.8k compared to y530 4.2k price. i guess the y530 1050ti build is way way overpriced and not worth it at all to get. might as well go for 1060 straight, or else get either raven or glock 5 for the 1050ti build..

I think May only start selling? Malaysia market probably delay 2-3 months

yeap read on lowyat website, speculated around May too..

wonder how much the price will be?
dont wanna get a y530 now with 1060 if in May the 2060 will be coming and not much of a price difference (say around 500 or so more from current y530 1060 price).

2060 is said to be better than a 1070 right.. dang.. dilemma now..

should i just get a temporary laptop instead?

Whoever is buying laptop today is better to check out Shopee's TMT sales.

Good price

Korra99 check out this https://shopee.com.my/Acer-Predator-Helios-...3178.1823854119

fussycat for gaming you can go for the above, most valued so far.

If thin and light then go for this

For the 8300H model, yes. Low sRGB IPS

Avoid Helios 300 due to bad cooling, build quality is OK but not great
*
yeah same thoughts as well.

from that link 3.7k for i5+4gb ram + 1060.
initially seems good price. but after considering, ram defo needs an upgrade, 8gb ram is another what 200+?

so already 3.9k there. but the 60hz ips is not upgradeable and also lots of complaints on cooling issues.. rather pay slightly more for the y530 or raven elite, at least can get 144hz screen.

btw want to ask. for the y530 144hz panel, is it low srgb ips as well or what?
you're using y530 as well right. any complaints for the screen? is it good? like in terms of brightness, colours, viewing angles, etc.
care to share your experience

All high refresh panels have high sRGB

No complaints, I never used a good display before so I'm very satisfied. Minimal backlight bleed, 25% brightness more than enough for indoor use, colours are vibrant. Only minor issue is the OKish contrast which can be fixed by tuning a little bit of brightness via Intel Graphics Control Panel

Note that you might get slightly better/worse colour quality even though it's the same panel (lottery)

good to know, thanks.

An i5 2060 configuration will be noticeably more expensive than an i5 1060 configuration
*
yeah i know, but i wouldnt mind spending more cause its for something new and in a way "future" proofing as well, could well easily last beyond 2~3 years..

the i5+ 2060 y540 coming in May is said to be about 4~5k price range depending on config.

i got this i5+1060 for 4.5k..

sorry out of topic, but what software do you recommend to check/monitor for thermals.

huawei nova & nova lite got different boh.. try to avoid any lite version... i pay few thousand to learn the lesson
*
aiyo, dont bring smartphone comparison to notebooks lah.
and not all "lite" means theres hidden inferior qualities.

as for illegear case, their branding of "lite" and "elite" means certain customization differences (usually gpu related).

take onyx that OP was asking about.

the difference is onyx is updated with rtx gpu. the rest everything else remains the same.
so for onyx lite, its with gtx gpu instead. the rest is the same with normal onyx.. so in no way by going for onyx lite the user will "regret" like you are implying for smartphones where usually the lite versions have a lot of cutbacks from their regular sibling..

another one is raven, they have raven and raven "elite".
raven = 1050/1050ti gpu
raven elite + 1060 gpu..
