I'm looking for a gaming notebook with a RTX2060 and preferably i7 8750H. What options do I have with good cooling solution?
I have 3 requirements ,
-> It has to support Oculus Rift VR headset. Means no Nvidia Optimus. If HDMI port connected directly to Intel GPU, Oculus Rift wont work.
-> Intel LAN port and Wifi adaptor with 2X2 if possible
-> 15 inch screen thin bezel if possible. 60hz also can accept.
No budget limit at this time.
I have looked at few of these notebooks. No Asus notebooks please. I had terrible after sales service from them before .

Illegear Onyx

MSI GL 63 8SE 098MY

No preference on weight and battery life?

Yea. Don't care about battery life. Weight under 2.5kg is okay.

If you don't want Optimus and want under 2.5kg, go for Lenovo Legion Y740 15 (Lenovo Malaysia website didn't mention GSYNC but it should have it)

Thank you for your suggestion. I want to ask, if I can accept Optimus , is Illegear Onyx is a good option. I really like those thin bezel. I have read from your Y 530 review that Optimus has its own problems , so is it really that bad?

I have a review on Onyx, coming soon. Overall I would say it's a good thin and light, but there are other options that can be considered as well

Optimus has some problems, try to avoid unless you need battery life. Not to mention that many GSYNC laptops nowadays do include MUX switch

Hi mate, I have talked to Illegear sales rep about this particular laptop. Because things like how many USB ports and basically their I/O ports are not written on their website, so I went to get more info.
There are few things I am not really comfortable with this Onyx model.
1. The power adaptor only 150W . I am looking at RTX2060 + i7 8750H , will it power throttle ?
2. LAN port is Realtek chipset. I was hoping for an Intel i219 or similar LAN chipset.

Then my friend told me about Level51 . Took a look at it. This model is quite interesting. Any comments on this since it is quite a lot cheaper than Illegear.

1. It has 180W adapter...at least in the review unit (2060 model)
2. TBH there's nothing wrong with Realtek chipset...moreover it's a LAN port

Slate-15 is Clevo P960ED. Good build quality and improved cooling (compared to P950) based on early reviews. I will review this model latest by next week btw

Means the staff also can give me wrong info. doh.gif
Ok let me tell you what is wrong with a Realtek chipset.

In the desktop and server world, Intel's LAN has 1 advantage. Intel LAN supports a higher transmit and receive buffers. Means more data can be stored in your memory while queuing to be transferred over the Ethernet. Less cycles to flush data from the memory and refill the buffer for the next transfer over the network. All Realtek chipsets I have seen only max out at 128KB for transmit and 512KB for receive buffer. Intel has 2048KB for both sides.
In return you get better and consistent performance . Receive Side Scaling also works properly as compared to half arsed Realtek or even some Broadcom chipsets. RSS is you allocate how many CPU cores just for networking, splitting the load so that you do not overwork 1 single core.
That is why all higher range enterprise class notebooks like HP Elitebooks and Dell Latitudes have Intel LAN and not Realtek ones. Only low end enterprise HP notebooks like the ProBook range has Realtek chipsets for LAN.

I'm still waiting for your review on the Onyx. So is there power throttle on that notebook ?

For me, the main difference between the Slate-15 and Onyx is the mechanical keyboard on the Onyx. But the price difference between the 2 is a lot.

I just bought from illegear. Onyx with rtx2060. Level51 cheaper by 200 bucks like tht. But i get extra game COD4 and the gaming mouse mat.
Damn... But i walked in to illegear office. Good customer service though.
1 major difference i saw is, for illegear you can extend your warranty for 3 years for 199 . Can do it within the first 2 years of ownership. Level51 is 450...

If really no budget constraint ,you can get a workstation class notebook which specialise in CAD software.

Dell Precision 5530

Intel core i7 8850H
16GB DDR4 2666Mhz
512GB M.2 nvme ssd
4GB Nvidia Quadro P2000
15.6 inch IPS ultrasharp screen
97WHr battery.
Roughly 1.8kg ,

Easily outrun macbook pro for almost half the price.

Between dell g7 and lenovo legion y530, which would u recommend? Without any specific preference, only on performance and durability?
*
If i were in your position , go test both units physically. Different ppl has different opinion especially the keyboard and touchpad.
If i were to choose between these 2, definitely i will go for Lenovo y530. The Dell G7 is a pain in the arse to dismantle when the thermal paste goes bad due to thermal cycling from years of usage. I will say that it will harden up after 2 years of use. The Dell has multiple layers of frame inside. If you have done some homework by yourself and you read that you only need to remove 1 screw to take out the bottom panel, that is true. The catch is however , you only get the access to RAM, 2.5 inch drve, M.2 and Wifi module. The heatsink/fan ? No way ! You need to dismantle the whole motherboard which is such a pain if you want to clean dust out and repaste.
If you are looking at something that runs great out of the box , then Dell G7 might suit you . In the long run , the Lenovo is easier to maintain.

Hi, want to ask +RAM +SSD on the behind meaning what? add on?

AND i check two of the model at levono website, Thinkpad E590 RM2829 realtek wireless 8822be 2x2  VS Thinkpad E580 RM2839 intel dual band wireless-ac 3165 , Price and other Spec Thinkpad E590 is better than  Thinkpad E580 , The only thing im want to find out is
(realtek wireless 8822be 2x2 ac VS intel dual band wireless-ac 3165  ) Wireless card is it intel one better/faster?

tq

For wireless adaptor. The intel 3165 is a 1x1 module. Theoritical speed can hit 433Mbps. 2x2 module can hit theoritical 866Mbps. 99% of the time, Intel wireless adaptor has better drivers from the rest like Atheros, Realtek and Broadcom.

1. Budget : RM3.5k, can push it up to 4k max
2. Usage   : Basic word processing (have to be able to handle multiple word/pdf tabs being opened; watching streams, youtube etc.; light gaming, i.e. games dont need to be at maximum graphic setting (Dota 2, older single player games like medieval total war, fallout new vegas. Best if able to play modern titles but not a requirement)
3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) : -

Display - prefer to have a bigger display (current asus laptop is at 15in)

Looks of the laptop - Prefer a laptop that looks professional and not too "gaming laptop" (I know it sounds like a weird requirement but I may have to bring it to work in a fairly conservative environment)

Reliability & warranty - Prefer to have a hassle free laptop that doesnt need to be send for repairs every few months due to hardware fault

Battery life - not a requirement but a good plus point to have.

Weight - not a requirement but a good plus point to have.

Thank you so much for helping out!!  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

If you dont like the look of the Thinkpads (yeah, I think Thinkpads look very uncle , i pick HP Elitebooks for my company because I cannot stand the looks of the Thinkpad), you can go to a more unique path and opt for a xiaomi notebook pro. Go shopee and find sellers. It looks like a macbook pro, it feels like 1 but its not a macbook laugh.gif As a gaming machine even if its a light duty gaming machine, I think you need to be aware of what the MX150 is . In desktop form, we know it as the GeForce GT1030. MX150 is a weakened version of it for the notebook market. My opinion is that, at least get a GTX1050Ti or GTX1650 if you want to have any meaningful gaming experience. I myself would suggest you a Lenovo Legion Y530. The whole thing is black like the Thinkpad.

Not sure whether i can ask common question.
Dell laptop battery die , plan to replace a new one but cost over Rm400 .I don't know why they charge so high for a battery.

Plan to get a 3rd party battery and here is the question.

-Does 3rd party have a brand name on battery ?
-How reliable is 3rd party battery ? no more cases on laptop on fire ?
*
Straight to the point . Dell does not produce any batteries by itself. Its Dell's vendor who produce it for them. We commonly use the term 'OEM' for this 3rd party. It might or might not have the "Dell" wording on the battery itself.

I will tell you its a gamble in terms of reliability. You can get from taobao if you want though, should be alot cheaper. 10 years in IT industry, i hvnt seen any laptop catch fire yet. I only seen either charger explode ( i turn on power, it goes with a loud "paakkkk" like that) or the battery get bloated until the top cover of the laptop cracked open , touchpad cracked , bottom cover pop open by itself. Yes, even a RM13k macbook pro can succumb to this in its original battery.

So i will tell you it depends on your luck too sometimes. For your question on why Dell charge you over 400 bucks for a battery, lets just say you paid 200 bucks for the Dell branding. Another 200+ bucks for the battery itself. It happens like this alot of times.
