on sale now, just need RAM+SSD upgrades (note that it only has 1 RAM slot and only supports NVMe SSD)

I'm looking for laptop for daily drive, long battery life and lightweight.

I been eyeing this model (320s) because its mentioned and recommended many times in this thread, plus the upgrade-able feature.

Or do you have other recommendation for same price range? Doesn't mind to add few more hundred if I can get a better spec.

Anyway, what do you think of Asus Transformer laptop? Or is it better to go for a 14" laptop?

What's your budget?
*
Around RM2500-ish, the lower the better. But then I just read your LTT laptop review. I think Lenovo Yoga 520 is the sweet spot among >Rm2500 range, assuming the price is still the same.

Any obvious difference other than the viewing angle for IPS vs non IPS laptop screen? I'm familiar with IPS desktop monitor display but not with laptop screen.

Edit: To think of it, I don't really need touchscreen and the foldable feature but still those are cool feature which I never tried before. It's amazing how searching laptop online can make one confused. laugh.gif

The info is a bit outdated...there are 2 other model for Yoga 520 with same spec (forgot the number)...price also not the latest

I can't find Ideapad 320s-14IKB in their website.

Is it this one:

Few options

Thinkpad L480 - for RM 2650 - you can get a Full HD IPS Panel + 8GB RAM (add 1 GB) + 3 year warranty next (add RM 1) + SSD . But it's an i3 , but then you get some durable laptop vs their ideapad series

Their ideapad 330s which is newer one , for RM 2650 you get an Core i5 , 4GB RAM (soldered tho) + SSD

https://www.lenovo.com/my/en/laptops/ideapa...B/p/88IP30S0987

Here is a review -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF0hEtvl9F0
*
I'll look up for the benchmark for i3 vs i5 later. But I hope with SSD and 8GB RAM, things will be smooth enough for daily use and slideshow presentation.

Ah, that's upgradble RAM is not possible in the future. Personally I think 4GB laptop is kinda slow for daily use, especially when Linux running Windows in Virtualbox.

Thank you for the link. Checking it right now. Hmmm...Things get complicated. confused.gif

VM ? Oh boy you gotta pump it up even more
Try Shopee , people sell 'cheap' keys. Now where they are sourced from , I am not too sure but it can be legally activated. Bought Windows 10 Pro upgrade from Shoppe

Yeah... Running Windows 7/ 10 in Linux host. How big should I pump it? mega_shok.gif

Budget: Rm3.5k, lower the better.
Usage: Daily usage, no gaming, no photo editing.
Requirement: Lightweight, good battery life, solid build, 8GB RAM at least.

Previously I was aiming Ideapad 320s-14IKBR. Wondering if I can get a good Thinkpad at this price. I don't mind any brand as long solid build. But again, seems like Lenovo really fits in "tough business".

QUOTE(ZM Fong @ Apr 14 2019, 01:49 PM)
Preferred min battery life in hours and max weight in kg? Any preference on display size? Mind low sRGB display and non-upgradable RAM?
*
I went to survey some laptop this afternoon at local shopping mall. There's not much reliable choice in Kuching, so I only visit PC Image, Thundermatch and Harvey Norman. Kinda disappointed with the choices but at least it help me narrow down few things.

To be honest I don't know how many hours is the definition of a good or excellent battery life. My current old bulky laptop usage time is less than 2 hours, so I think 8 hours is more than enough for me. I'm willing to sacrifice this for performance tho.

Weight wise, I realize most of the laptop that I'm interested is less than 2kg, so I guess 2kg is acceptable for me.

Display size wise, I been living with 14" laptop for my whole life. And after my short survey I think I prefer 13" but again I don't mind going for 14" if I can get better spec and features.

I don't mind low sRGB as long it's good to the eyes. But I do prefer IPS or good display.

Sometimes I run Virtual Box OS, so I guess 8GB should be enough for me (for now). I don't mind soldered 8GB and I don't really mind an upgradable 4GB.

Anyway I got some question, regarding Intel vs AMD for laptop, which one is better? I read that AMD got overheating issue?

High sRGB display, non-upgradable RAM:
Lenovo Yoga 730 13 customize
Lenovo Ideapad 720s 13 Intel 81BV000BMJ / CMJ
Asus Zenbook UX430U-NGV176T
Lenovo Yoga S730 81J0005LMJ / 81J0005KMJ - no USB A
Acer Swift 3 SF314-55G-547H
Asus Zenbook UX331F-ALEG010T, UX331U-ALEG032T / 033T
Acer Spin 5 SP513-53N-52HJ, SP513-52N-58QD

Low sRGB display:
Lenovo Thinkpad E490 / E480 with 3 yr onsite warranty upgrade
Lenovo Ideapad 530s-14 81EU00NRMJ/ SMJ/ TMJ/ UMJ
Acer Swift 3 SF314-54-55JD / 57FD / 59T5 +RAM
Lenovo Yoga 520 81C80016MJ / 17MJ +RAM
Huawei Matebook D 14
Lenovo Ideapad 320s-14IKBR (i5-8250U) +RAM+SSD

In general, Intel based laptops are still better (not without flaws though). Neither are perfect TBH but there's no other choice
*
Wow... Thank you, that's a lot of choice. From your experience and based on your preferences, which one is better in term of build material and quality?

All of them are good models TBH

I see. I'll take a look at the suggested model. Can't find much Thinkpad at Kuching, but spot some Swift, Huawei and Zenbook the other day.

Anyway, what's the deal with high vs low sRGB? Googled but not much info. Is it the maximum brightness and accurate color reproduction of panel?

QUOTE(prasys @ Apr 25 2019, 05:19 PM)
Okay , here is the simple thing

E series = Consumer series - Basically you get okayish build quality with their good keyboard + trackpoint

L series = It's a step-up from E series. You get some of the things from the expensive thinkpad like better build quality , MIL spec , spill proof

T series = Legendary series - It's best of the best that one can afford and to buy
So to be honest it depends how long you want the laptop to last. If you want it to be super long , consider T/L series. If you are on a budget , E series would do the trick
*
So I read that E is just a consumer series with Thinkpad label. While L is more like 20% of the T series, which makes me wondering if its really worth it getting E4xx over the Ideapad, Swift 3, Matebook or Spin series.

Read that E series is improved now, and consumer series is improving too? But when I search Thinkpad quality equivalent, people still recommend Thinkpad. laugh.gif Any explanation for this?

True, E series is consumer series, but the build quality is still good compared to other good consumer models
*
Thank you for conforming this. I'll try to customize the L series first and compared with other laptop that you recommended in the previous post. For unknown reason, I'm really hooked by the Thinkpad although I admit the design is quite boring when compared to others.

QUOTE(prasys @ Apr 25 2019, 10:31 PM)
E series is just improved over normal consumer laptop. It's for prosumers and want the legendary Thinkpad look and feel + the keyboard

L series is more like 60% of it . The reason why people say get Thinkpad is that you can easily upgrade some of the things yourself without voiding the warranty and plus you can find spare parts easily to replace it. It's designed for enterprise use - so you know companies dont change laptop every 2 years
*
Thank you for detail explanation regarding L series > E series in your previous post too. What you mentioned above really make sense to me.

The reason I'm very fussy this time because my previous Inspiron 5437 caused me quite issue. The plastic casing suddenly crack few months out of the factory. Somehow I admire their superb warranty service, they replace the casing on the spot after complaint. Then the CPU fan stop working after few years causing overheating issue. Not sure if its my fault for swapping the RAM which I done many times in other laptop and computer, there's an electrical spark + fire + smoke at the power plug slot. doh.gif

And that's how I kinda interested with business series laptop. But again I'm typing this from my wife's old Asus A43S. It's thick, bulky, heavy, and the OEM battery last less than 2 hours, still it served me well and proved me consumer laptop is not that bad considering luck is on our side. laugh.gif Ironically, I used to avoid Asus due to the slow service at Kuching, but that was years ago. hmm.gif

Business laptop design is boring, but they have better QC except for low end models like Thinkpad E (Not as good as before though, even high end business laptops will have QC issues. Still better than consumer laptops)
*
Noted... I don't mind the design as long I can get a decent build, and maybe on par spec or a tad below. I think QC is beyond our control.

BTW may I know what do you mean with above line? Referring to E series or generalized to business laptops.

This or get Swift or Zenbook at similar price?

RM3,470.11 after eCoupon. Anyway, is the eCoupon got expired date? Or the coupon is just a gimmick from my Google search record?

Wow good deal...if you don't mind the look then definitely T480. Sadly no more customization (probably EOL soon due to arrival of T490)
*
Can customise but super mahal. Not sure why tho, that's why I afraid this price got limit. I wonder how long does the battery in the above spec can last since T have battery optimisation.

As for the T490, how much difference in laptop CPU performance we're talking about? E490 seems like on the way already but the CPU is just slight faster?

And for those who familiar with Lenovo, will the new release make the old laptop cheaper than they're now?

I'm wondering if this come with backlit keyboard? Can't find the keyboard spec inside the tech specs. But I suspect not.
