Hi,

Thanks for having this informative thread. Highly appreciate it.

I got a few questions with regards to achieving maximum wifi speed. Please bear with me. Many thanks in advance for any response received.

I'll be receiving the Unifi Turbo upgrade soon, (within two weeks as advised by TM via phone call yesterday), from 30Mbps to 300Mbps. Below are my current 30Mbps setup. FYI, I'm staying in a double storey terrace. Router is downstairs in the living room next to the fibre termination point.

My computer is upstairs. Wifi extended via the Tenda A9 below.

I was told that TM's tech will be coming over to do some setting & change the router. I would assume they's be providing the stock TP-Link AC1200 (correct me if I'm wrong).

I was told, contract will be reset due to the router change or RM200 will be billed if I opt not to reset my contract. I opted to to be billed the RM200.

My questions:

1. Would it possible to change my mind and say no to the new router & purchase my own? If yes, what could I get for, let say budget of RM300.
2. Or, if I don't mind the contract reset, use the stock router first & buy new router later? Is the AC1200 any good, sufficient for double storey terrace?
3. And lastly, how do I achieve a reasonable wifi speed for my devices located upstairs; ie. my desktop computer, my kid's tablet, phones and what not. I read few threads not recommending wifi extender like what I'm using currently. What other solutions are out there?

Many thanks again.
*
My suggestion for you is to buy own router as the C1200 have random reboot issues.
TM won't give you a better router.
Budget of RM 300 won't give you a reasonable router.
Can top a bit.

Please state what are your receiving devices spec.
No point buying new routers if all devices are using 2.4GHz only.

Wi-Fi extender will give you half of the speed.

Thanks.

i was just turboed to 300mbps but is still on dlink wbr2300 which support only up to N protocol.
I am only getting 55mbps the most under N, is this acceptable?  I thought N can goes up till 300mbps?
*
Hi. In real life you won't get 300Mbps if it is up to 300Mbps over Wi-Fi.

Over LAN can. Do change your router as it is outdated.
Do read out the Wi-Fi Router Discussion first page for new router suggestion and read the first page of this topic to learn how the Wi-Fi affected.
Wireless N in reality, up to 110Mbps only.

Thanks.

After scouring through the threads at LYN, if (this is a big IF) I go for TP-LINK Archer C3150:

1. Will it just be an overkill?

2. Or will It consider future proofing?

3. Better router = better coverage, no?

Many thanks again for any feedback given.
*
Hi, TP-Link Archer C3150 will be good for you.
Need to ask the guy SilentVampire to comment as he is using this C3150.
You're using Hypptv?

If you want speed and coverage of 300Mbps upstairs.
Then I suggest you to get Deco M5 which are able to support 300Mbps.
The problem is that if wanna use Hypptv with Deco need to buy a separate Smart Switch.

1. Nope, it won’t be an overkill.

2. Yes, it will be future proofing.

3. Much better coverage if you use C3150.

It is a very stable and good router, and definitely worth it.
Cheers for the tag.

Good to see that you manage to get such speed. From my side here, I can't seem to get that kind of speed. I am using Asus RT-AC66U which support 1300Mbps at 5Ghz and TPLink Archer T8E PCI-E which also support 1300Mbps at 5GHz. I can get a link of 1.3Gbps but the transfer speed I only can get 3XXMbps.

Distance between router is around 8 feet and nothing between them. Tried all the channels but the max I can get is still 3XXMbps. is there anything that I am missing out? Having this issue for years but cant seem to find the problem.
*
You're using 500Mbps plan?
For 5GHz try the channel that is the lowest.
And set bandwidth to 80MHz.

Thanks.

No no, I am only using 30Mbps plan but I am not referring to ISP. I am doing WiFi Transfer within my own network and the ISP internet speed should not be in the Picture.

Tried setting the bandwidth to 20/40/80MHz, didnt help much in my case.
*
Oh, I'm sorry that I can't help much as I'm don't do Wi-Fi Transfer.

Need some an expert guy here.

highest channel is 48.
set to channel 48, 80mhz, ac only. still the same.
is that possible arising from bandwidth limit of the wifi? but i couldnt find the setting to adjust the bandwidth for my tplink c9

any problems with the setting below? everything is in default

Hi, try to set to the lowest channel. Or set Auto and see got differences or not.

Is NAT Boost Enabled?

Is it related to my laptop technology or..

Check in Settings.

Start --> Settings --> Network & Internet --> Ethernet --> Click the button --> What is the full details there.

And also check your link speed. Go to Network and Sharing Center --> Press Ethernet from connection.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is what i have,

Time 500mbps
router: TP-Link c1200
modem: Huawei EchoLife HG8240H

Laptop: Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 (2 x 2)
PC: TP-Link Archer T4U USB Wifi Adapter (2 antenna and support MU-MIMO, 2x2 correct me if im wrong) connected to USB3 port
phone: note 9 ("enhanced 4 x 4")

all support 802.11ac and i connect my devices to the 5ghz band.
speedtest using a few different tools such as ookla speedtest all gave me similar results pretty consistently.
DL: ~250mbps  UL: 300 - 400mbps
all settings at default/auto

Also tried manually configured afew things as suggested above such as setting channel width to 80mhz, change channel and so on

if i specify cahnnel width to 20Mhz, the speed does go down, so it indeed affect the speed.
after changed to 20mhz: DL: ~150mbps  UL: ~90mbps

Am i missing anything? (i actually created ticket to Time to ask for technician to check, pending respond)
*
Hi, I would like to recommend you to change router this stock router is unable to handle the speed that you're using.

I would like recommend you this router ( ASUS AC86U or ASUS ROG GT-AC2900.

Thanks.

Hi you work with Time? actual performance vs spec so much difference? I'm sad. Anyway i have contacted Time and waiting for the technician to call, i'll get them to confirm the issue first.

Thanks for the info.
*
I'm an agent for TIME. C1200 is very old and have a lot of issues and is replaced with TP-Link EC230.

This is due to router problem. Your receiving devices specs looks fine and able to support 500Mbps.
The router is preventing from you getting full speed via Wi-Fi.

What's your LAN Speed? 500Mbps?

Thanks.

Time technician called me and this is what he said
it's normal to not reach the max 500 mpbs for wifi and 250 mbps is normal although the router support higher than that.
So i asked why my friend same router can reach 490mbps , he said no guarantee one and 250 is acceptable(not to me) and i only need to worry if LAN cannot reach that speed.
Currently don't have LAN cable cannot test that.
*
Hello, for the C1200 normally can get up to 250 via Wi-Fi.
If you are getting only 250 even near the router means you need to change the router.

I'm using TP-Link Archer C9 AC1900. I'm able to get 400-500Mbps near the router.
In the room around 100 - 200. Changing to Wireless AX Router and Wireless AX Adapter will solve this issues.
Supposely that C1200 is suitable up to 300Mbps only.
That's the reason that it can't achieve.
A few of the forumers here change to a new router and will solve the issues.
I have C1200 with me but it is totally worse than my own router ( Archer C9 ).
Even for 5GHz from C1200 getting lower speeds than my own router.

Thanks.

hate the fact that the router differ so much interms of actual performance vs spec(and my friend does get 590mbps with same router). I understand the words  "up to" but still...haha thanks for the info.
may be the wifi can run that speed but cpu and ram of the router cannot handle?
if my LAN gets near 500 then i will get another router. Thanks again
*
It is impossible to get that 500Mbps.
Are you sure that he is using the same router?
If he is using his own C1200 then will be difference cause TIME Stock Router and Own Router use different RAM.
TIME is using old TP-Link C1200 with old logo. New logo will be better.

You can refer to the YouTube here.
Even above the router also unable to achieve.
The C1200 RAM is too low and that's the reason that it can't achieve.

Thanks.

i clarified with him again, he is using ec230-g1 connected to the modem then extend it with the deco m5.
Just now when he test again the speed, connected to the ec230-g1 he only get 50mbps lol
connected to the deco m5 he gets 230 mbps, seems like his connection is worse than mine, not sure if he got connected to the right band or not.
the 490 mbps one he got it when he first setup his mesh router, he mentioned may be because that time only himself was connected.

thanks for the video, so basically my(no wall, within 5 m) speed is similar to his with the wall in between.
*
TIME EC230 is better than C1200 slightly a bit.
If you wish to get EC230. It will be more or less the same with C1200.
Not worth the change if you are getting for free.

You can advise your friend to replace the stock router with the M5 instead.
If he is using 2 or 3 packs. Do inform that if he use EC230 together with Deco M5 will affect the speed.
As Deco M5 is using single SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
While the EC230 has separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz signal.

Using Mesh Wi-Fi will generally improves the speed.
If your house is more than 1,400 or 1,500sqft then Mesh Wi-Fi will be sufficient.
Below than that use Single Router instead.

I'm using Archer C9, in the room able to get 5GHz signal ( 2 bars ).
My house is around 850 sqft. In the room able to get 100-200Mbps.
Will change router to AX Router soon when I am planning to fix the AX Wireless Card.

Thanks.

Hello. This is my speed test below.
user posted image

I'm able to achieve 400-500 for upload speed.
For the download speed I will test again later as I need to restart the router.
I keep my Archer C9 running for 24/7. As my family member is using the Internet so I can't restart now.

Wi-Fi Card --> Intel® Dual Band Wireless AC7265.

Thanks.

not cheap, may be later find one cheaper one aha
I tested lan cable can go up to 450mbps(is that normal? thought it should near 500 like 480+), so like what you said, really the router wifi capability cannot la. Today testa bit better, able to get up to 300mbps depending on the server i chose.
later got budget change to a better router.
*
LAN Cable connection should be above 500Mbps or less.
I'm able to get 520++Mbps via LAN.
Or you can try to bypass to ONU and create PPPoE connection there.
If no one around you are using the line.

Thanks.
