GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng defended the state executive council's decision to purchase a Mercedes-Benz S300L as his official car, which cost the state about RM300,000.
Lim said the Mercedes was purchased after a state execuitve council meeting, that took into account safety and security of state leaders.
He said the state further considered it as the car was offered at that price and it was worth the money for long-term purchase.
"The new car does not belong to me anyway. It belongs to the state and will likely serve the next chief minister after me," he told reporters when met during the Penang Development Corporation's Christmas and New Year 2014 celebration here.
He said from records, a Mercedes' maintenance in the long run was better than a Proton.
"We would not consider the purchase of the new Mercedes-Benz if it was not exempted from tax and was not given a special discount.
Anyway, I am willing to accept criticism from any party," he said.
He said the state executive councillors had initially wanted to replace their old Proton Perdanas with Mercedes cars instead of Toyota Camrys.
"But the state did not go with the original plan because the car supplier approached could not give a guarantee to take back the cars if the tax exemptions were not approved," he said.
He added that the Toyota Camry 2.5 that was used by him will be given to Deputy Speaker Maktar Shapee.
News of Lim using a brand new Mercedes so soon after 15 new Toyota Camrys were delivered to the state on October 31 this year for the use of the chief minister, his deputies and state executive councillors have raised eyebrows.
It was reported that Lim started using the Mercedes-Benz, which was purchased at RM298,263.75, on Monday. The original price of a Mercedes-Benz S300L is reported to be RM657,218. - Bernama
