I'm no guitarist, just an old rock guitar "freak" who loves
good solos and knows a little about pickups and effects.
You virtuosos should check out the" Hot Blade" pickups which
came with Aria Pro's "Knight Warrior" series of guitars around
1986. They are the punchiest, heaviest, most dynamic and
cleanest pickups I ever heard. You can't find that combination
of sounds in a "name brand" pickup like DiMarzio or Seymour
Duncan. They are actually called the "MMK 45" pickups, after the
manufacture of Aria Pro, Matsumoko. It appears the Krokus lead
used this pickup.
The key to a good, clean sound is not to use too high output a
pickup. DiMarzio's X2N, for example, has an impedance of 16 Kohms,
which is way too hot. DiMarzio's "Super Distortion" and many other
"hot" pickups, typically measure 13 K, which is still a bit too high.
The MMK's impedance is about 11 K, which is just about right, giving
a low-medium output.
You can read about it in my post here :

Apart from that, another heavy pickup is Paul Reed Smith's
"HFS", which stands for "Hot, Fat, Screams". The pickup
literally lives up to its name. It'll blow away any DiMarzio or
Seymour Duncan, anytime. John Norum used it on the 1990
Dokken album "Up From the Ashes", You can hear his guitar
screaming, especially on "Living A Lie" on Side One.
