Now to set the right magnetic setting.
Tie to a 8grams lure(practically anything above 6cm is 7~8grams), then set your magnetic brake is set to 10, and your tension knob(the stupid nut that Bro Chun lost it) to ensure the spool doesnt move sideways. I'll explain more on that later stage. The tip here is, as you cast, notice your lure....as it's about to touch the water, use your thumb to stop the spool fully. Otherwise, due to the sudden change of speed at your spool, the spool will overrun and cause you CBH.

Then make a swing of, back to front with a minimal strength swing. You should be reaching 10m~15m. Do that for 5 times....

Then adjust your magnetic brakes to 8, and do the same strength swings again x 5. You should be getting 20m averagely....

Keep adjust the magnetic drag to lower the brakes(DO NOT PUT 2 or 0), until you get some CBH. NOW, the trick here is, tighten abit of your tension knob. Cast again for 5 times.....it's either getting lesser CBH or no CBH at all....if no CBH meaning that you have set the right setting for yourself. Otherwise, loosen the tension knob a little and adjust your magnetic brake +1 degree. Keep testing it again.

REMEMBER NOT TO CAST TOO HARD YET! Increase your casting strength bit by bit...educate your thumb to stop the spool at the right point smile.gif



TENSION KNOB 101.

The tension knob is being used to tightened the movement of the spool by limiting the movement of the spool shaft.

See graphic below.( |-| is spool, >>> is the spool shaft and |o is the tension knob)

Usually this is the stock or as new setting. In such if you noticed that the spool shaft is not touching/connected to the tension knob at all. In such way, it's either using magnetic brake or centrifugal brake to slow down the inertia of the spool gradually. But sometimes caused a minimal CBH. The spool will be able to move left and right bits.

Now, adjust the tension knob slowly to ensure that the tension knob touches the shaft a little bit.(HOW THE HECK I AM ABLE TO SEE THE CONECTIVITY OF THE SHAFT AND THE TENSION KNOB?????). This is how you check.
1: Tightened the knob bit and bits...
2: Then use your thumb to try to move spool to the left and right. If it moves, repeat step 1, until there are bit of movement.

Just a few types of lures...
i would say accurate casting is very important, there's few ways of looking at it.

1. Diver based lures. Diver lures have bip or lips. The lip and aerodynamic of the lure determines what is the max depth that the lure can go. Seeing a steady splash, and you have to determine whether you can cast to the splash or not
1.1 might be too far and out of your coverage
1.2 cast to the left or right of the splash
1.3 if cast to far back, how far back you want it to be
1.4 how fast or slow is the splash
1.5 retrieving speed - fast or slow or twitch or jerk
1.6 and alot other factors which will contribute to your success

2. If popper
2.1 pop it fast or slow
2.2 loud or soft
2.3 small splashes or big loud splashes
2.4 pause and retrieve factor
2.5 direction of the toman after breathing
2.6 alot other factors as well.

3. if doggie
3.1 walk fast or slow
3.2 pop it or twitch it
3.3 what is the distance of each walk
3.4 pause and walk
3.5 and again, alot other factors as well.

Here it cover 3 different type of lures, have not covered it all yet!
- soft plastic
- minnows
- jerk or twitch bait
- prop or flutters
- sinking
- rattling

What is Drag?
Drag is the resistance that a reel provides in the opposite direction of the force applied.

How is it measured?
Actual measurement is in KiloJoules or amount of force required to move the object (line), but most fishoes just think of it in terms of weight, like KG or LBs. This measurement assumes all things being equal, the object (or reel) stays in an unmovable position, it does not take into account that fishermen are made of soft quivering tissue.

How is Drag generated?
Drag is generated by friction. Mechanical energy is transformed into heat by friction from the drag plates in a reel.

What do people mean by a smooth drag?
Imperfections in the drag material or plates cause intermitent fluctuations in friction. A "smooth" drag is one that has fairly constant friction throughout all ranges of resistance.

How much Drag do I need?
No exact answer to this, use your common sense, the stronger the fish, the more resistance its going to take tire it out. A 4-5kg Ang Chor can take its own weight in drag for 1 or 2 short runs.

How much Drag can I stand?
Find your own limits. Heavy short people can take more drag, because of weight and low center of gravity. For most people weighting 70-80KG, 13KG of drag is pushing their limits, unless you're built like Mike Tyson and weigh as much as Akibono MAYBE you can take up to 20KG of drag. (A qualifier: I like to fish holding my rods, some fishoes I know leave the rods permanently in rod holders and set ultra heavy drags.)

How do I set the Drag on my reel?
Use a weighing scale. One common misconception people have about drag is that they set it to such an extent that the reel locks up, thats the wrong way about it. Set your drag such that at that setting the line is still slowly creeping out. Thats the max drag with free spool setting. Most people say set your drag to 1/3 your line poundage, personally I believe set your drag for the weakest link in your tackle, the fisherman himself included, or 1/3 line poundage, whichever is lighter.

Only thing to consider is to use the right lure and presentation at the right time.

take these comments for consideration on lure casting
1. predatorial fishes humps on anything that moves or fish-like
2. predatorial fishes are very territorial - anything that pass their den will be humped
3. predatorial fishes are always hungry - be it cold or hot weather. But it depends on them if they want to chew up something or stay hibernating.

for lure,
1. presentation of the lure mimicking the bait fish
2. presented as a trespasser
3. curiosity
4. easy prey - which need not to be chased

and alot other factors as well.

Popping is a method to awake, to create commotion and to annoy the predator. The loud 'pop' or splashes created by the popping method. Poppers are usually with big cupped mouth. See pic.



Poppers need not to be popped all the way inwards, but you can do a stop and retrieve mode as well. There is quite a number of styles that you can use depending on areas

1. pause and retrieve
2. loud pop
3. soft pop
4. big splash
5. minor splash
6. small little movements
7. vibe the lure
8. very fast or very slow.
9. the ultimate idea is to create the earlier mentioned presentation form.

Doggie is actually a short form which we(few anglers here) used. The term walk-the-dog came when the lure move from left to right in a syncro cadance. Just like when you bring your dawg for a walk...they moves from left to right.



The mode of presentation is similar to popper. Both of popper and dawggie is top water lure. BUT~ there is some degree of slant as the lure does not lie flat on the water surface, but some is 45,60,90 degrees slanted.

NOW on crank baits.

I take crank bait as lures with lips. In short to say, when we retrieve, the lure will dive in due to the incoming pressure towards the lure and the lip(some calls them bip) moves the lure downward to cut the pressure.

The depth of the lure is depending on the lip generally. But it is also affected by the aerodynamic of the lure travelling underwater to determine the actual depth.
1. super long lip - deep
2. short - med depth
3. super short - shallow


Pls disregard the center blue colored lure.

The 2nd point to note about the lip is the ability to dodge the stumps or snags. Some of the lip is pointy, bigger on the end or having some part shaved off. There is no confirmation on the best one that can dodge all snags, but some general ones are good enough. STILL, the shape of the lip also determines the running depth. Talking about, some of the lip are curved with certain degrees or straight, as such it has effects on the depth as well.
