There are free services and paid service.

Both required u to change dns setting in router. You can check adguard dns or opendns.

There are other better services but have monthly/yearly subscription which u can have more records and better features.

Dns setting is simple and most device can set at DHCP option. U just need to find correct DNS to do setting.

For ur case , I think Mifi don’t have ddns updater, u only can use adguard dns instead of opendns. No selection block categories available, only standard dns protection to prevent kids access adult content and have google safe search.

U need better device to do more things. mifi have very limited function.

Some of the antivirus come with parental control.

I agree with you, mifi is really limited in case of functions and if I were OP, I would use the other type of gadget for better parental control.

You can install a special app/software on your smartphone, there's a plenty of such programs now and I'm sure that there are many acceptable of them for your device. It's much easier than changing some avaliable functions of the smartphone.
The main problem here is to find the certain app for you because there are really many of them now.
I can recommend you to pay attention on such things for making your choice easier:
- blocking websites on a set of criteria you choose
- being very hard to circumvent for even the most technical children
- having a good technical support
- providing for you a monitoring function
- being useful in case of social media too, especially chatrooms and so on

I recommend you to try such parental control apps as Mobicip, NearParent, Safe Eyes Mobile, Net Nanny, SafetyWeb, SocialShield and CyberSynchs. There's also a special keylogger software https://www.refog.com/ which can be used on various gadgets.
