i clean my 2011 MBP air vent and fan once in a while with soft brush and blower. it works alright for the past years.

kind of. read from article. it's pretty straightforward. get the right screwdriver, normal screwdriver for my glasses work for my mbp. unscrew all, remove the bottom plate and you get access to the fan. i do not disassemble the whole fan unit to clean, just a general surface clean.
