Anyone know what are the charges for foreign currency fee paid using AMEX? I want to pay about 7000 TWD this weekend but not sure if it is better to use AMEX or bigpay...

It's 2.7% from all the cards I've seen. If the American Express card you're using provides purchase protection, and you'd like some insurance against theft or damage (or the ability to file a chargeback in case of fraud), it's a good idea.

Thanks for all the feedbacks! Looks like I will go for bigpay instead then to lower the currency conversion charge. Don't think swiping AMEX for the 5% and TP is worth all the charges

You should just use the 5% card since it negates the foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. American Express uses a near interbank foreign exchange rate. It's the same fore Visa or Mastercard. The card associations do not have hidden fees in the form of a wide foreign exchange spread.

for anyone traveling to South Korea or has plans to:

the extra charges (currency exchange + overseas charges) aren't too bad as well. My transactions averaged 2.63% on top of the transacted amount.

Well done. The benefits of using an American Express are well worth it. If I redeem for airline miles (probably everyone does this), my cashback rate is around 18%, so that rate is negligible.

Should I continue using it for the rest of the month for the 5x TreatsPoints ? is it worth it when exchange for AEON cash vouchers? I remember it's like 2% if calculated as cash vouchers

Yes. All redemption rates other than for transferring to airline miles are terrible. If you prefer cashback, get a different card.

Why is the treat points conversion to ringgit so low??? You spend RM100 with Amex only get RM1 worth of points...

The fees that banks could legally charge merchants decreased a lot since 2012, so they had to decrease their rewards structure. It used to be quite good and it's just going to get worse when their fees get capped again in 2021. The best conversion rates are redemptions for airline miles.

Hi guys. Sorry to bring up the old posts but I have a similar dilemma now and hence the question. Hoep you don't mind. Seems like there's two views here. I actually plan to do some foreign transactions over the weekend, so should I use bigpay or the Amex with the 5% cb?

That depends on whether 2.3% net cashback and the ability to file a chargeback is worth more than whatever rewards you're earning by reloading and using Bigpay.

Wanna ask how to maximize the usage of both cards?
*
1. Get the Maybank 2 Premier and request to replace the deafult Visa card with the Manchester United Visa version for 5x when the team wins a game. Pledge RM30,000 or whatever if you don't meet the income requirements.

2. Apply for a BigPay card.

3. Load the card in 1) for RM10,000 when they win a game.

4. Enjoy 50,000 Treatpoints.

Yes. Go to the revamped Maybank website to see the current details, though.

and step 3 - load the card as in load the big pay card with rm10k?

Yes
