So far I have successfully used my MasterCard PayPass at AEON Supermarket MV, Kim Gary MV, Sepiring MV, Lavender Pastiserie MV, The Hogan MV, AEON Big MV, McD MV, just to name a few.
Good for you.

Perhaps, the software version of the Maybank credit card terminal at AEON Supermarket MV is newer.
I tried to use MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card at AEON Supermarket Taman Maluri, but it failed. As expected, the PIN transaction with the same credit card worked well.
In my opinion, Maybank credit card terminals tend to support Visa Paywave only. So, it it will not work, if I tried to use MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank card, on the Maybank credit card terminals.
On the other hand, CIMB credit card terminals can support both Visa Paywave and MasterCard Contactless. It went well, when I used the same MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card, on the CIMB credit card terminals in Super Seven Supermarket.
Well, perhaps other savvy credit card users here have more positive experience with their MasterCard Contactless credit cards.

My colleagues just replaced her M2Cards this month as they are foreigners so their cards will expire every year.
Surprisingly just noticed their M2AmEx has the wave logo.

Last time, some of us managed to get free replacement of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card with MasterCard Contactless function, for example in Maybank Card Centre in Gardens, Mid Valley.
Perhaps, we can get free replacement of Maybank 2 Card American Express with Expresspay function, via same method.

My Maybank 2 Card American Express is a little worn out, since it is my main credit card for retail swiping.

In exchange of free replacement, we savvy credit card users will help Maybank to promote American Express Expresspay function, and promote greater awareness among larger Merchants (such as Aeon).

exactly! limitation is not on the physical card, but also on the thousands of terminals flooding in the market (with variety of configurations and vendors).
bringing in amex contactless would be tougher if amex still using their own proprietary Expresspay

Ok, I am not an expert in credit card terminals.
However, MasterCard Contactless, Visa payWave, Amex ExpressPay are implemented based on the same ISO standard, ISO/IEC 14443 (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_14443). Amex ExpressPay may be proprietary, but if there is no restriction on the acquirer bank, the credit card terminal should be able to accept all 3 contactless methods, which should be compatible with each other.
Then again, the acquirer bank, who supplies the credit card terminal, can choose to disable the Amex ExpressPay function, upon Merchant's request.
