Even PayPass is already a struggle, the most successful is PayWave. laugh.gif

no choice, during PNP migration, BNM seems to endorse/favors PayWave.

They should at least make the terminal to accept both PayWave and PayPass just like how we can use both Visa and MasterCard in the same terminal. This is really creating inconvenience and banks with MC cards are disadvantaged by this approach.

exactly! limitation is not on the physical card, but also on the thousands of terminals flooding in the market (with variety of configurations and vendors).

bringing in amex contactless would be tougher if amex still using their own proprietary Expresspay hmm.gif

Sigh. It's such a pity that normal users like us can see the issue but not those in BNM. doh.gif
Yes, most likely AmEx will have its own contactless feature and here we go again on the terminal incompatibility.

Didn't expect there are terminals in Malaysia are ready for AmEx contactless as AmEx acceptance is lower here.

I've not come across any terminal recently which only accepted Visa but not MC contactless or the other way around. Even when the terminal only shows one logo, it still accepted the other brand contactless. I've noticed many merchants have terminals that supports contactless but they don't realise or like it when you say you want to use contactless.

Well, I experienced some terminals cannot use PayPass even if it accepts contactless. PayWave is usually OK.

Some restaurants in MV which I used previously. Nowadays I don't try anymore since it has no benefits for me to use my Ikhwan MC for dining. I think that's the only MC contactless card that I have. I have no issue using it in Jaya Grocer though since I use it to reload my TnG there.
Forummer in BP also mentioned PayPass has lower acceptance compared to PayWave. To be fair, I stopped using as I use PayWave most of the time so not sure if situation has improved now.

No QM for dining? Even McD which heavily promoted Visa contactless when they first launched their card terminals quietly added support for MC contactless. My take on this is the biggest push came when banks forced people to convert to debit cards. The number of cards in the market supporting contactless jumped a lot and supporting only one standard no longer made any kind of sense.

Well, hopefully it has improved. QM = PBB Quantum MC? I haven't got yet, already received approval SMS two days ago. I should receive on tomorrow.
I shall try again to see if it's not selective like previously which these terminals favoured PayWave.

Looks like it has improved. Maybe I should consider changing my MC cards to contactless then.

Good for you. smile.gif Perhaps, the software version of the Maybank credit card terminal at AEON Supermarket MV is newer.

I tried to use MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card at AEON Supermarket Taman Maluri, but it failed. As expected, the PIN transaction with the same credit card worked well.

In my opinion, Maybank credit card terminals tend to support Visa Paywave only. So, it it will not work, if I tried to use MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank card, on the Maybank credit card terminals.

On the other hand, CIMB credit card terminals can support both Visa Paywave and MasterCard Contactless. It went well, when I used the same MasterCard Contactless function of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card, on the CIMB credit card terminals in Super Seven Supermarket.

Well, perhaps other savvy credit card users here have more positive experience with their MasterCard Contactless credit cards. hmm.gif

Last time, some of us managed to get free replacement of Maybank MasterCard Ikhwan Credit Card with MasterCard Contactless function, for example in Maybank Card Centre in Gardens, Mid Valley.

Perhaps, we can get free replacement of Maybank 2 Card American Express with Expresspay function, via same method. thumbup.gif My Maybank 2 Card American Express is a little worn out, since it is my main credit card for retail swiping. tongue.gif

In exchange of free replacement, we savvy credit card users will help Maybank to promote American Express Expresspay function, and promote greater awareness among larger Merchants (such as Aeon).

Ok, I am not an expert in credit card terminals.

However, MasterCard Contactless, Visa payWave, Amex ExpressPay are implemented based on the same ISO standard, ISO/IEC 14443 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_14443). Amex ExpressPay may be proprietary, but if there is no restriction on the acquirer bank, the credit card terminal should be able to accept all 3 contactless methods, which should be compatible with each other.

Then again, the acquirer bank, who supplies the credit card terminal, can choose to disable the Amex ExpressPay function, upon Merchant's request.

I know about iso14443.

all rfid-based contactless are based in same iso14443 which is the technical specs on wireless communication on top of iso7816 (basic smartcard with chip).

problem is the applet/software and encryption used. each has their own way of implementation, which is why being branded separately. there is no common one like wifi etc. solution is based on banks/terminals to provide access to diff contactless "standard" out in the market.

both visa and MasterCard are part of emv, so there are some common interoperability. as long as terminal support both, it's easy to turn it on. maybe there are commercial issue (eg mdr rate difference) to be dealt with. merchants unwilling to accept both if mdr they are paying is higher than the one they are paying now.

my guess is, look for emv logo on the terminal, I guess it would support both visa and mc contactless. older terminals might not have it.
