Hi carsifu-es,

I'm driving a 2008 Honda City 1.5L VTEC variant. For the past 2 weeks, I've been hearing a very strange whirring noise whenever I step on the accelerator. It sounds a bit like an airplane engine and gets louder the more I step on the gas. When the engine is idle, there are no strange noises. Before this, there were no such noises. What could be the cause?

For additional info, the car had been in an accident 2 months ago when somone bang me behind, but it's now fully repaired. The front suspension and windscreen has been recently changed also. The gears, however, sometimes "slips" esp the reverse gear, but I plan to change the gearbox in a week's time.

TQ in advance!

What's the O2 sensor? Air filter seems ok, though what should I look out for? Muffler looks and sounds alright. It's not too loud other than the whirring noise. Engine oil is full and no black smoke coming out from the exhaust.

Well, will probably ask the foreman to take a look when I'm changing the gearbox also. I just scared that since i don't really know what's causing the whirring, the foreman might come up with a dumb reason and charge me a huge sum later tongue.gif

Will have a look at the wheel bearings. It was changed a few ago as well. Forgot to mention.

EDIT: Did a quick check of the sound of bad wheel bearings, the noise online was a low pitched growl. Almost like metal rubbing against one another. But the sound from my car is more of a high pitch squeal. And it didn't sound like it came from any of wheels, but rather the engine, or under the engine i think.

Don't change the gearbox. Sell the car.

I didn't know my mom was going to change the gearbox. Honda refused to fix the clutch after buying the parts because technician wasn't confident he could do it. In the end we refund and mom went to uncle's recommendation workshop to change gearbox. I thought she was going to change the clutch only. In the end, now bigger problem appeared. Blinking D plus loss of power.

Didn't went to ask. Went to that branch because my cousin work there and can get discounts for parts.

We also asked my sister's friend who used to work in another Honda SC and same comment. Like very few case throughout Malaysia and best they advise change a totally new costing 5 figures.

Sorry for bumping old thread. Mine has the same problem, low speed whirring noise, seemingly from gearbox. Did you manage to solve your problem?

No. I've since sold the car coz the gearbox is just not worth replacing anymore. Bought a Persona MT instead lel
