It's an addiction that's rarely being talked about or even being aware of, especially in this country, for some reasons. With diabetes, overweight and subsequently heart diseases being the primary health problems in Malaysia, I personally believe that getting rid of sugar addiction is the first step of prevention.

I realized this problem of mine someday when I was craving for coffee, but instead of the aroma and smell, I realized I was actually thinking about the sweetness, which of course comes from the sweetened creamer. So instead of the regular less sweet kopi peng, I ordered kopi "C" peng, without sugar. For the uninitiated, C is evaporated creamer, or unsweetened creamer. I was of course proven right, that I was not really that big a fan of coffee, at least not what I think I was. It's the hidden sugar that I crave for each time.

This finding helps renewing, or should I say actually starting, my love of coffee, and improves my relationship with food in general because now I know what I'm really craving for.

I'd suggest that to identify if you have this problem of being addicted to hidden sugar, replace your favourite drink with the no sugar version of it and see how much you'd like it. It would make you more conscious of what you are putting into your body too! Now, I'm not health expert, so hope to hear from others as well as any stories. icon_rolleyes.gif

For myself it was an addiction, and when it's a hidden addiction, double scary mang.

No problem with drinking coffee itself actually, but when you are addicted to coffee, like I think I was, then it's time for you to understand what actually are you addicted to.

The problem with us Asians is that we are already taking in a lot of sugars in the form of carbs in the first place. Rice is our staple, so I think we should avoid sugar when we could for a healthier life.

Milo addiction, the story with (almost) every Malaysian kid lol laugh.gif
Seriously though, the love we have with Milo really shows that we don't know or care much about sugar addiction. Milo is like 70% sugar (?).

Similar to a friend of mine who must have a cup of milo every night before sleeping. You can drink the milo without adding any sugar or sweetener. It's already sweet itself. Can start off by adding more water to your milo to make it lighter and diluted, then slowly reduce intake.

Even soy milk is sweet, unless you take the natural ones instead of packet.

Agree with sugar addiction. Sadly, I like salty stuffs so junk food's my weakness. Have been working towards less intake through buying small packets. High in water retention, bad for cholesterol and gives various problem. Like they say, what tastes good is bad for you! Really gotta work harder to curb the issue.

While sugar is addictive, it is still something that we humans can tolerate in larger quantities unlike drugs, alcohol or nictotine. But granted, it is still very important to consume in moderation.

For me, I usually try my best to avoid adding sugar to anything I cook and will try to drink water most of the time as just about every store-bought drink will contain some of it. However, recently I found myself craving for sweet drinks when I started frequenting McD in the UK. Hence, I try to go for the no sugar options. It's still not as healthy, but hopefully it's a step to get rid of the craving for carbonated and sugary drinks.

About the underlined part, while it's a good start, the amount of sugar is still the same as previously, I would think the better way would be to reduce the no. of spoon of Milo. Same effect with dilution, lesser sugar goes into your body.

Drinking Milo before bed is my childhood memory lol. Worse part is that my granny added sweetener to it. Seriously Nestle is committing crime under broad daylight here!! laugh.gif

Yup sugar addiction is very prevalent in our society. Even the local food recipe, calls for some sugar/palm sugar to be added. My mum has the habit of adding sugar to savory food she cooks - meat stew, marinate chicken etc etc..

I never thought Milo O is sweet, until I started on pure coco milk. Never thought normal coffee is too sweet until I try latte without sugar.

Has anyone try pure non-sugar non-sweetened soy milk?? You will be surprised by the taste.

Yeah, that's the thing. I really doubt how many people really know the taste of something they claim to love without sugar in it.

Ordering kopi o is the most that I can do right now to reduce my sugar cravings because I feel like the bulk of the sugar in coffee comes from the condensed milk. Sometimes I just order plain water. But I agree, sugar addiction is crazy hard to beat.

Usually in our Malaysian Kopi, where condensed creamer is used, there would be no more sugar added to it. I observe this from my fav coffee stall.
There is another option for us actually, Kopi C (C being evaporated or unsweetened creamer), which is the way I'm going now. But have to mention no sugar, otherwise they would normally add in sugar to make up for the lack of sweetness.

My daily caffeine dose is kopi-o kosong or kopi/teh C kosong.

Try to cut down on softdrink, any other sweet desserts.

Seriously try to change that habit of eating sweet stuff .....after a long time of not drinking anything sweet and avoiding soft drink , after a while your tongue/body will get used to the non sweetened environment. Yesterday I ordered a kopi peng , and I was disgusted with how sweet it was and avoided it automatically. All my other friends thought it was ok but I felt it was too sweet. It really does show that in the absence of sugar , your sweet taste buds will get more and more sensitive and you will need less and less sugar to feel satisfied.

You're right in a way when you calculate the calorie/ sugar intake. This is a starting point to reduce too much intake. Start with diluting it and then slowly reduce teaspoon of milo/ sugar wink.gif that's how i cut down on milo. By diluting, it didn't tastes as good and I end up not finishing the whole cup. The following days I've reduced the teaspoons of milo and subsequently stopped taking it altogether. Nowadays i only take milo once in awhile for breakfast or tea time.

You're right, milo + sugar/ condensed milk is the the worst. It's already sweet and to give something extra sweet to children is basically making them obese. I read that it's a similar problem in the US. Back then researchers told consumers not to consume "fats" because it makes them put on weight. Thus consumers turn to sugar such as cereals, oat bars etc but this makes matter worse. Decades later researchers claim that it's not "fats" that increases the weight but it's sugar. End of the day we'll just need to have a good balance of everything.

Really? I was like barf.. what's this? It's a bit bitter laugh.gif

To reduce sugar intake, we also need to reduce many of our delicacies that contains sugar - sambal nasi lemak (I know.. we all love the sweet savory sambal), rendang, some curry, sweet sour meat etc etc... cry.gif I was learning to cook some thai food and was like Huh? Tomyum goong needs sugar??

Maybe the 1 u had was really organic lol.
Mine is like in powder form.

Well Thai food mostly will contain loads of sugar believe it or not.
If you never been to Thailand maybe you dono that every restaurant table will have sugar instead of salt on the table.
Like they put sugar in everything even in beef noodles soup brows.gif
