Definitely sounds like a router limitation.

I am in the same position as you.. depending on what TM offers in the next week or so, I'll either:-

a) Enjoy 3x the speed (from 30 Mbps to 100 Mbps) for RM10 cheaper price per month (100 Mbps for RM129)

Pros to this approach:-

1. Get 100 Mbps NOW, instead of waiting for something which may take ages to arrive since I'm a new Unifi subscriber and they would definitely put us at the back of list for Turbo phases.

2. RM 10 cheaper per month

Cons to this approach:-

1. Will never get the turbo speed.

2. Might be charged a penalty fee? (But going from 30 Mbps to 100 Mbps is an "upgrade" right?)

b) Wait until next year for turbo to 300 Mbps which may or may never come

Pro to this approach:-

1. 300 Mbps for only RM 10 higher (RM 139 vs RM 129) per month vs 100 Mbps in perpetuity with no Turbo

Con to this approach:-

1. The cutoff date for the turbo phases is June 2019, Nearly 9-10 months could pass before I see the Turbo speed, and paying Rm 10 more 3x less speed for that period of time is a total rip off!

Let's see what is offered on their end.

I did not get charged RM200 for the "downgrade" but got locked into another 24 month contract.

Bloody hell it should be called an upgrade, not a downgrade.

Anyway, my own experience of getting the RM 129 100Mbps package ("downgrade" from Rm 139, 30 Mbps Bonanza package) is rather similar to a few others on the forum:-

1. Went to Damansara Utama (Uptown) TM Point at 9:00 am to find a queue already forming inside. Consensus seems to be that many are switching over to the new package.

2. Was 5th in line. Had to wait for 30 mins before I was tended to. Mentioned that I wanted to change my package to the 100 Mbps one. Staff at the counter mentioned a combo for RM 159, I just persisted on the RM129 package. He relented, and mentioned that I wouldn't qualify for the free turbo. I told him that since I had just moved to Unifi 2 months ago (July 2018), I wouldn't see any Turbo until next year at the earliest and 3x Download Speed/5x Upload Speed for RM 10 cheaper per month was too much for me to pass up on.

3. He informed me that a technician will have to visit the premises later next week (tentatively Monday) and after which the upgrade would be applied. I was puzzled since my TM provided equipment (ONU/Router) is brand new and only 2 months old and should definitely support 100 Mbps. I also thought that they could adjust and apply the new port speed on their end without visiting my premises.

4. 3 hours later the account was adjusted to the new 100 Mbps (STB) plan and the PPPOE connection reset itself, reconnecting at the upgraded speed.



I'm pleased with how seamless and fast it went. Big thumbs up to TMNUTZ.

The black cable going into your Modem is definitely fibre.

Can you get that sort of speed from far away servers though?

I mean supremely fast local bandwidth is all well and good but does it apply to US/EU/South American servers too?

No point having 800/200 if TM's international links to those countries can't even sustain those speeds.

Imagine when they turbo all the older 100 M to 800 M speeds too. The fiber backbone is finite right, only up to a certain Gbps limit?

That was kinda a factor for me "downgrading" to 100/50 @ RM 129 instead of waiting for 300/50 for my previous 30/10 RM 139 package.

Even on 100/50, not all international speedtest servers can give me 100/50, what more if your speed is more than that.

This is not an issue per se but rather a limitation of TM's international link to those distant servers.

You will never get the full Turbo speed to speed test servers beyond a certain distance unless they employ multiple simultaneous download streams.

Which is why I feel like even 100/50 is enough to currently enjoy the full available international bandwidth allocated per user to international and distant sites.

Getting 300/500/800 results on US/UK speed test servers is pipe dream for now until and unless the links are improved or upgraded.

You are eligible. But if you are scheduled to be turbo'ed before the end of the year (Phase 1 turbo) and have already gotten the e-mail, I recommend that you wait.

Also consider that your contract will be renewed for another 2 years and since you've just got 1 year to go it is best to wait it out. You are considered an existing long time customer so should get the turbo before next year.

I switched over to the 100M RM129 plan because I just got my 30M RM139 Unifi in July 2018 and my turbo will almost definitely be coming June 2019 since they will turbo new customers last.

3x the download and 5 x the upload right now for RM129 was too much to pass up on for me instead of having to wait for an undetermined amount of time.

Another 2 year contract is no big deal to me since only 2 months have elapsed before I made the change.
