Updating my Ruckus AP....

I wonder how good is the affordable R310 compare to some high end consumer routers? hmm.gif

I tested the R700 and R710 before and of course consumer level devices are no match. biggrin.gif

Hi folks.
I managed to find a seller selling Asus RT-AC88U at RM795 after discount. He claimed it is new and comes with 1 year warranty but imported from China. Is this a good price? Maybe it is refurbished?
Thanks.
*
Could be refurbished but refurbished device can be spotted easily by the condition.

A lot cheaper than local unit but you bear the risk if the device failed. ASUS MY provide 3 years warranty.

I am unable to view it since it is would be sent from overseas.
Refurbished also means it could be second hand, which indicates the warranty is supplier warranty?

I spotted another set at around RM900 from another seller but it is also from China.

So for these 2 prices, could these be China version but still new and authentic? Or they imported from Amazon or something?
Or these prices are too good to be true, such that most likely they are not new but refurbished?
*
At this price, it can only be China version as Amazon version is much more expensive.

Could be new but you bear all the risks as even it is new, the warranty is provided by the seller as there's no way for you to claim it unless you travel to China.

Nice curation by TS on #1 post.
Routers with actual realistic maximum wireless throughput based on my testing for TP-Link. biggrin.gif

TP-Link
Archer C1200 - 100Mbps, ~300Mbps
Archer C5 - 300Mbps
Archer C7 - 300Mbps, ~500Mbps
Archer C9 - 500Mbps
Archer C3150 - 800Mbps
Archer C5400 - 800Mbps
Archer C5400x - 800Mbps

For those models with a ~ symbol means it can reach that speed but under really optimum conditions

I suggest editing it based on actual throughput for consistency sake. Asus is making claims based on realistic figures. Else users would be buying a C1200 and expecting it to run up to 500Mbps.

Edit: Tested on a laptop with a 3x3 1300Mbps on 5Ghz Wifi card. smile.gif

wireless AP client mode vs usb3 wifi receiver

just curious.. not that I plan to buy this or anything

TP-LINK AP500, an an AC1900 Gigabit AP..
let's say it is used in client mode (connect your pc using a cat6/7 cable to it)
in theory, it should give a faster speed (on unifi 800Mbps) compared to using whatever brand AC1900 usb3 wifi receiver right?
*
It will be a lot more stabler and faster than any USB Wireless adapter in the market.

USB is prone to interference on 2.4Ghz and poor performance due to various overheads.

it has only 1 lan port and if it's connected to the router via wired connection, it is no longer called client mode, that would be access point mode.  sweat.gif
yeah the firmware is damn old, 2015 I believe? But for the US version they released a new update early this year

the main thing that I'm curious about is using it in 'client mode' vs any other 'usb3 receiver"
speed wise I am not worried because I do my main downloads on a pc with a wired connection sitting next to the router  laugh.gif
this is just to satisfy my curiosity xD
I see.. this is the answer I'm looking for  hmm.gif
Since you are pretty resourceful with networking hardware, perhaps you could source for 1 unit and do a review of it (wifi ap client mode vs usb3 receiver)?  laugh.gif
*
I got enough routers and client AP sitting on my desk to say that it will be better for sure. biggrin.gif
PCIE wireless card > AP/Router client mode > USB wireless adapter

My review of the Asus PCE-AC88 which can push 1Gbit over wireless.
https://www.blacktubi.com/review/asus-pce-ac88-review/

Possible to go more but the NIC of the client test device is only up to 1Gbit. biggrin.gif

My house is doing renovation now, anyone know where to buy cat 6a lan cable for home networking ? i thinking to hide all the cable inside the wall.  any recommendation ?
*
There are various vendors selling this on Lelong.

CAT6 is much harder to crimp and they are not really 10G capable unless it is crimped properly. wink.gif

Make sure you put PVC pipe as well for longevity.

Is it a requirement to enable ipv6 for turbo-boost? I used to use it, but some webpage return unavailable. Ipv4 no problem at all. Using the Cloudflare DNS.
*
No, it is not a requirement.

I suggest disabling it for now as well since certain websites did not configure it properly and you may face issues.

Thanks but pardon me, could you elaborate a bit more on the limited bandwidth?

I'm also thinking on going with the Powerline Adapter route + Wired Cable but dunno if it's a good idea if I can get consistent 800Mpbs from a wireless adapter hmm.
*
Consistent 800Mbps from USB wireless adapter is only possible at super short distance.

AV1200 powerline only peak at around 150Mbps in realistic situation.

EDIT: Upgrade the wireless chipset of your laptop if possible.

QUOTE(richard1226 @ Sep 13 2018, 11:32 PM)
So I finally got turbo to 500Mbps and I'm looking to upgrade the network infra in my house.

Current Setup:
Ground Floor
- Alcatel Lucent I-240G-P -> TP-Link Archer C7 v2
- Router connects to Unblock Tech Android TV box and TP-Link PA4010 (1)
- TP-Link PA4010 (2) connects to my brother's PC in the back room

First Floor
- TP-Link PA4020 connect to my PC at the living room directly above where my Unifi setup is

I can see a few options and none involves pulling long ethernet wires across the house just cause. So, the following option I thought of:

1. New router on ground floor and use the existing one as AP on first floor, running one powerline set to my brother's PC.
2. Assuming I found a contractor to pull the fiber cable to the first floor and setup the modem and router there, leaving one/two? set of powerline to my brother's PC (or the android TV box since it got internal wifi receiver).
3. New router and AP setup, no powerline so brother's PC uses wifi adapter
4. New router, all PC uses wifi receiver (final resort)

As my family constantly uses their mobile devices, the TV box, PCs simultaneously for mainly media streaming, gaming and such, in terms of cost, speed and feasibility, which would be more suitable?
*
AV500 powerline can only reach 60Mbps peak. Even a low end wireless solution can outperform that.

The most optimal one I would say is to maintain your router at your TV cabinet and put a LAN to the first floor and use the C7 as a secondary AP.

You should upgrade your router to at least the Archer C3150 as well. With that you can expect at least 250Mbps stable over WiFi on a AC1200 clients.

You mean they can actually Reset the Port remotely, and my modem will shows 1.0Gpbs when i test it by Modem - Cat5e - my pc gigabit port?
*
They will reconfigure the BTU remotely (TR069) to enable the faster port speed.

Then, you should reboot your BTU and router.

You can connect the BTU to your PC to verify if the BTU port speed have been uncapped.

EDIT: Clarified remote

Can I get at least 500Mbps with my Huawei WS880? WiFi is priority because all of our devices are connected via WiFi.

I don't think I'm hoping it will reach 800Mbps though.. If it does then it's great.

Last I read it may support 800Mbps too but now I have a doubt. hmm.gif
*
Not possible at all. I benched WS880 at around the 450Mbps mark and that is at at a short distance test.

In fact, getting 500Mbps stable on WiFi is very hard.

You will need a good wireless router and a really good WiFi chip/card on your WiFi devices.

Realistically 300Mbps is the limit with our current devices in the market and that is provided you got good signal. smile.gif

Being AC1750 doesn't make it more radioactive than a N300 Wireless router. It is about spectrum efficiency.

802.11ax will be even better. smile.gif

You mixed up AX and AD.

AX use the same frequency as what we have now so it has the same signal penetration.

laugh.gif I must be sleepy now. laugh.gif
How on earth I'm still expecting the WiFi to spike more than 500Mbps. My apologies. blush.gif
Then I will need to check out the cables I have at home, I recalled we had a few Cat 5e at home, maybe I should grab some from office.

K, spoonfeed me. Itu 3*3:3 configuration, must be super high end stuff right?

The highest end devices I have are my mobile phone LG V30+ and Lenovo X1 Carbon which is my company's laptop.
*
3x3 WiFi is super rare, basically a technical spec. Realistically to get the kind of speed you need a wired connection.

Any sifu can help me,
I know some internet knowledge, but i dont think it is applicable for my situation.

I have  BTW huawei hg8240w, Tplink, C1200 and turbo to 500 Mbps however my speed test result really like shit.
Note: I disconnect all wifi and speedtest with 1m cat5e cable at port 1 on the C1200.
The speedtest result is show below:

What should I do test improve the speed test result, should I update any firmware?  I did 10 min cold restart for a few time. Now asking on twitter to reset my connection.
*
Make sure you are using CAT5E between your C1200 and HG8240W as well.

Still waiting to be turboed in seremban area. Planning to change my dlink trash can to asus 88u. Saw in msia cost about rm1.3k but on taobao  it's half the price. Very tempting. U guys know if there is any difference other than the warranty and plug type? Tq
*
Wait for ASUS promotion then it will cost lesser.

China units come with China Plug and China warranty only.

My main aim is to extend my house coverage ( trying not to use any wall plugs or extender) coz my current dlink 850L is quite sucky. Router currently in living room at the bottom of tv cabinet shelf
*
If you want local warranty and support, you can consider the TP-Link Archer C3150.

Comes with the exact same chipset and perform similarly as well.

It just don't come with that much features like ASUSWRT and high end TP-Link routers have pretty decent firmware unlike their cheaper ones.

After over 3 hours of surveying, researching and asking around in LYP about how to setup my home network w/ Turbo 500Mbps (even tho I did my homework here and there and somewhere......)

Finally end up with something like this:

Home Profile
- 2 Storey House
- Around 1700 sq ft
- 3 location to setup

Ground Floor
- Alcatel Lucent I-240G-P --> TP-Link Deco M9 Plus (1)
- Deco 1 --> Unblock Tech Android TV Box thru 5m RJ45 Cat5e Cable
- (Back Room/Drum Room) Deco 2 --> Brother's PC

First Floor
- Deco 3 --> TP-Link 5 Port Easy Smart Switch TL-SG105E (Switch)
- Switch --> My PC and other 2 laptops

I know there will be some asking why I didn't just drill holes, lay long ass cables or get more better routers just to get the highest speed and most stable net possible, but wire-free tidiness and budget means I can't go crazy with the setup (until the foreseeable future that is)

So far the speed tests I did on DSLReports on my 1st floor PC with around 10 devices using the network gives me an average speed of around 450Mbps down and 100Mbps up. Of course I'm happy with what I got so far so it'll have to do for now.

10 tests result I did after the setup
[attachmentid=10027205]

P/S: the line before was old tests on the old setup which can be refer here
*
Nice one, the Deco M9 Plus is definitely the best mesh device I have tested so far. biggrin.gif

Make sure you run the latest firmware on that one.
