Don't buy MR DIY Surge Protector powerstrip, The MOV is only protecting one socket.

There is nothing wrong with the varistor placing. It did connect to live common and neutral common. In MR DIY powerstrip, if there is power surge and all four switches are turned on, only Green socket will be protected from surge while the Blue, Orange and Red sockets will be hit by surge.
