This wouldn't be a pointless thread if the TS had put more information regarding winter breaks and why some quarters have been calling for it to be included into the English calender.
The main reason why this debate exists is because of European competitions. The Spanish and Italians have winter breaks and it has been argued that it is one of the reasons why they historically fare better in European competitions compared to the English.
Personally i do think having a winter break is a good idea...fatigue definitely plays a part when the season reaches the late stages. But there is an obstacle in that there are more matches that English teams have to play and i can imagine the schedule headache if there was a 1 month break.

how long is the break in the spanish and italian leagues?

the answer could be that the english league makes the most money frm the xmas and new year fixtures where the holiday season draws in the crowds so more sponsorship, tv money and ticket sales, not to forget merchandise sales. after that, there will be a two week break in jan but that break has been mostly taken up by international firendlies or euro/world cup qualifiers. can the break be expanded into 1 mth? maybe, but the top teams in the league will face fixtures congestion imo...

I say no. It's bad enough that I have to last a few months without footie now, add to that another few weeks for winter break and those international breaks, would be boring as hell. Haha.

Quality > quantity

If its true that winter break sort of improve performances as claimed by managers .. we could be seeing better performances from all the teams smile.gif

The break for an English team before the Champions League final or international break is way too long in my humble opinion. They should have schedule it better so that the season will end in time for the international breaks and THEN, only have have a full season break.

in a nutshell: YES

lol it's bad enough if during December, there's no footy action.
If there's local football on telly, I guess I can live with it for that moment.

Gonna be boring as hell, but it's a good time for the managers and players to take a break though.

So, kesimpulannya.

Managers = Good
Us = Bad

I think many/most of the stadiums (if not all) have the underground soil heating system so it shouldn't be a big problem unless the heating system fail (like what happened 2 seasons ago where some games have to be postponed due to that).

one interesting thing is england is still on par with spain n italy 4 number of european cup winners by country despite the congesting fixture of epl laugh.gif rclxms.gif

spain - 11 real madrid 9 barcelona 2
italy - 11 ac milan 7 inter milan 2 juventus 2
england - 10 liverpool 5 man utd 2 nottingham 2 (WHAT A FKIN DISGRACE!SITTING IN DIV 2 DY) doh.gif shakehead.gif aston villa 1

but i feel the statistic 4 england could have been higher if they got winter break hmm.gif icon_idea.gif

During winter, the attendance and TV rating are generally higher because the fans have holiday that time. Thats why EPL refuse to have a winter break like other leagues do.

Money has the highest priority.

Instead of having winter break,
the EPL fixture is even more crowded during December.
this isnot healthy for the english football.

With cup games (FA Cup & Carling Cup) around and also sometimes those unnecessary international friendly games, they got no choice but to pack the schedule in December (Boxing Day n etc) sweat.gif

ya la....December is the time those club earn extra money......
btw despite the winter break, i would suggest January break.....
after all the December fixture and the final epl game will be closer to FA cup final and European cup final (if any English club can reach) so that the player will not lost their touch.........
