Well, there seems to be very few Pentaxians here so I guess I'll start this thread for the Pentax top of the line DSLR - the K10D. This is my first foray into digital SLR and I still have my old Nikon F301 + a couple of lenses and an ext Flash but that is a story for a different time

I got my K10D recently at Trillion (Midvalley) after surveying the market for months. I went for the package that was on offer (including the kit lens), threw in a Hoya UV filter for the lens that retails at RM300++. The final hole blown in my pocket was RM3,780 (!). Not bad eh? The package includes:

Body - K10D
Lens - DA18-55
2G Sandisk SD
A camera bag
A nice starter tripod (sturdy enough for the camera)
And the Hoya UV filter for the lens

I think that's about it. Of course it also came with a charger, strap, USB cable, and a useful but easily misplaced viewfinder cap.

Now that I have this baby the biggest problem is getting out there and take photos! Been mainly restricted to night time shots and this is one of the rare occassions that I've got the camera with me in the morning.



The kit lens is versatile enough but an upgrade is definitely in the pipeline. Maybe one of the pancake lenses or one of the Sigma/Tamron telephotos.

I really wish I can put in more sample shots but maybe later, when I finally managed to find more free time to do a walkabout with camera in hand. A few more shots below, as I said - night photography







So far I have been 100% satisfied with the purchase, the camera is a joy to operate - most of the important controls are accessible directly and rarely do you have to mess with the menus. Understandably, Pentax is not very well known here in Malaysia but there's a big community of Pentaxians out there.

There are obviously a lot more to cover and so if there are others here, please share your thoughts and maybe a few shots?

Foto Shangrila recent promotion (which ended yesterday) for this beauty at $3600. The package incl all the above (with 2gb Sandisk Ultra) except for the UV filter.

I was keen on the Canon (400D) and Nikon (D40X) but now I'm poisoned by this camera! Moreover K10D has shake reduction built in the body and not on the lenses.

where got, D40 is the bestest camera in the world liao

For simple comparison sake, various reviews I've read in camera magazines put this camera at the same level as Canon 30D and Nikon D200.

Not D40.

Agree with TS. D40 do not come a mile closer to this camera in its performances and features. Anyway the K10D is not for novice and like the 5D it has no Scene modes.

TS, would you know how much for the battery grip and the lens (50-200mm) addon in the shop you brought your camera from?

Anyway, that shop in MV said RM780 - expensive!

But I'm sure that depends on your bargaining power. I got the Hoya filter for RM80+ when the retail price was RM330...

I would agree... and for a price that's cheaper than the 30D or D200, you get in-body Image Stabilisation and weather-proofing (gasket-sealed water resistant, dust resistant body). There is some fuss that the images from the k10D are 'soft' and that some slight banding/striping occurs at very high ISOs.

Added on May 28, 2007, 8:42 pmThis should not be a problem if already, with your P&S with manual overrides, or your prosumer cam, you do not touch the pre-set scene modes any more. You may be able to set 'custom' scene modes, depending on whether your DSLR lets you do that or not.

Pentax K10D - winner of the TIPA and Camera Grand Prix 2007 awards!

I have the Pentax K10D, DA16-45mm, DA50-200mm.

Shoot RAW and PP your pics if you don't like the jpegs. Banding does not occur with proper exposure, even at high ISO. Even the D200 had the same problem too with improper exposure.

Not that I'm gonna do that

The soft image is quite well known, but it apparently only evident if you're shooting Jpegs - something to do with the way the camera processes the image. I've upgraded my firmware to the latest 1.20 but not sure whether this has any effect on the matter. I shoot RAW almost exclusively so this is a non issue (at least for me).

Still have my old trusty Lumix compact in the bag for everything else...
