Hi,

I recently bought a few items from US and shipped it using FedEx. The total value for the items were 32.95 USD (4 Car Rim Center Caps + 1 book, both over 30 years old). I paid around $36 ($35.98) for shipping with insurance via FedEx (I used MyUS to consolidate my packages). So the total value is around $68.95 ~ RM 281.50, which is way below the RM 500 limit). I was charged RM 106 for customs. FedEx has given me a receipt from customs asking me to pay RM 106. They stated that the freight charge was over RM 500 and the total value was RM 670 so my rim caps got taxed 25%, the book wasn't taxed.

I paid around RM 155 for shipping (with conversion fees) and I have proof for it. The items already came with a invoice from MyUS with their value.

This is the shipping charge rate from FedEx offical site

Even though its about RM 80 more, the total value still is below RM 500. What are my options here? I called FedEx customer service yesterday and they told me their (freight charges department??) will call me on Monday. I could opt to pay the RM 106, but I rather not.

Shipping? or Custom Tax?

I am not talking about the value of the tax, rather the fact that tax was imposed in the first place. Why did FedEx give a wrong freight charge calculation and why would they pay the customs tax even before the item left US? And now they just expect me to pay them back cause they couldn't question the customs?

I am also not sure about the tax rate for a rim center cap that is 30 years old and one of it even has some rust.

Should have made my title clearer. I have no problem with FedEx shipment charges, my problem is that they told customs malaysia that the shipment was Rm 500++ hence I got taxed for my items.

Fedex broker when they declare the consignment will use their own judgement when they felt your value is too low (to avoid taxes obviously). You can contest this valuation and proceed to meet with PK (Pegawai Kastam) together with your actual receipt. MYUS is re-shipper. Their value is not acceptable.
Fedex are usually more professional, the other yellow color are the worse of the lot.
