Yamaha YZF-R15 now available in Malaysia – RM11,988

The third-generation Yamaha R15 comes with an interesting 155cc single-cylinder SOHC engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) which is able to produce around 19hp @ 10,000rpm and 14.7Nm torque @ 8,500rpm. With a six-speed manual gearbox.

To ensure that the rideability is smooth as butter, the 2018 Yamaha YZF-R15 is further elevated with an assist and slipper clutch which allows for easier roll-off from standstill and a more controlled stopping performance when going down through the gears for this 137kg sports bike.

Other impressive features include:
Upside-down front forks
Updated Deltabox chassis
Aluminium swingarm
All-round LED lights
Fully-digital speedometer
Updated body panels
Digital instrument panel with rev limiter or shift light
Front 282mm disc brake
Rear 240mm disc brake
11-litre fuel tank

Launched in conjunction with the Yamaha Gen Blu Carnival in Batu Kawan, Penang, is the 2018 Yamaha YZF R15, priced at RM11,988, with zero-rated GST and pending final government approval. The YZF R15 is a brand new model option for Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Malaysia in the sub-250 cc sports bike category.

The 155 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine comes with four-valves and variable valve actuation (VVA). The power plant is claimed to produce 19 PS at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm.

Power gets to the ground via a six-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch and chain final drive. The engine is housed in a Deltabox chassis with aluminium swing arm.

Front suspension is with non-adjustable upside-down forks and pre-load only adjustable monoshock at the back. Braking is done with a single hydraulic 282 mm diameter disc in front clamped by a two-piston calliper with a 220 mm diameter disc with single-piston calliper at the back.

Lighting is brought up-to-date with LED headlights and tailight, complemented with hazard lights, a new feature in the YZF R15’s class. Inside the cockpit is a fully digital LCD panel which includes shift lights.

There are three colour options for the 2018 Yamaha YZF R15 – Blue, Black and Yellow – with a one year or 10,000 km warranty, whichever comes first. Availability of the YZF R15 at authorised Hong Leong Yamaha dealers is at the end of August.

According to my colleague who's riding a non-ABS Duke 200, his bike is now worthless especially after the ABS version was launched. Very poor resale value I'm afraid. sweat.gif cry.gif

If you're looking at long distance touring and comfort with some cornering thrown in, the Dominar is the one but I think the R15 is more for corner carving like its bigger brother the R25. Plus, the bigger engine of the Dominar also maybe means less stress as you eat up those kilometers. I would say the R15 is a good fun bike for the city and the occasional short ride into the twisties for its price but for longer rides, the R25 would be better IMHO

why 'they' will go for R15...

"........Slipper clutch deltabox frame dgn vva system..mana nak dapat weii 250cc pun pakai tube frame ja. Delta box frame ni kukuh sikit time layan koner. Tambah dgn slipper clutch memang sedap la drop gear pakai pulak power shifter..ni untuk yg kurang berkemampuan ja.. cuba tengok race 250cc sapa yg lead sekarang? Honda kan? Tengok dia punya suspension depan. Tu kelebihan usd fork, boleh lanyak koner kaw-kaw dgn late brake. Nak power pakai ja big bore 62-65mm.. dah sedap dah 160-180 kmj gps. Ok la tu dgn bujet murah dari 250cc dah boleh layan mcm superbike. Tankpun 13 liter puas hati kot? Moto ni sesuai tuk gaji rm 1000 kebawah . 19hp standard..kalau tune ecu tu balik ka atau tukar high perfomance dah power dah.

I don't know where to start here, if your pay is below RM1K you should focus more on why your employer is paying you below our minimum wage.

"Modal tak sampai 5000 ringgit dah dapat power macm r25"

R15 VVA beats the R25 in some technology (VVA, slipper clutch & USD forks), but in terms of power the R25 would sweat less at high speed due to it being a two cylinder bike versus the single cylinder R15.

I think not many yet in lowyat. The bike is kinda in between. It got a good spec like VVA and slipper clutch and USD fork but same CC like moped thus need  10s from 0-100km/j. No different from y15zr. If only Yamaha bump the CC to 200 or or 185. Now still consider Ninja 250sl or this R15.

Yes. 200cc would be better. Design wise, it's a very good looking bike i would say.

Yes it is really good looking bike. sportbike feel with lower cc.
maintainance should be less or more like Y15ZR.
test ride it and feel like ride TZM with 4 stroke engine.

I already brought it, black colour.

Personal opinion why I brought this r15 is
- there is many stupid or pig driver who very lembab driving in highway or town road, so I feel more confident ride this bike below 100km/j for this situation.
- low maintenance. As per review, I saw R25 almost 4k per year for maintainance. Example, I need 1 litre oil engine instead of R25 need 2 litre.
- this is first time I ride a bike with sbk design, so I don't really think I can perform really well especially on cornering for high cc bike. You can say this is my starting ride an sbk style. Before this I use kapchai.
- So far, I can reach 153 top speed with std spec. I trust this bike can go more than that. So I feel satisfied since Y or RS only can go around 143 even 150cc.
- I'm not like this 'hobi kami mahal' else If i'm anak sultan while I hold this bro said 'instead of you waste your money to modi your engine so on why not you just save your money and get a bigger cc" If you modi n you can go with high top speed for long time then I might be agree with that. Example, can you ride your modi bike for 2 hours with 200km/j while your originally you bike only can go to 137km/j? That's the thing. I spoke to many peoples who love to modi their bike and their answer is same "NO".
- High trade value. I was thinking to buy NS200 which is slightly cheaper and bigger cc. But I thinking for the long term with this bike I dont have to worry I want to chage to bigger cc one day.
- KL to Cameron only rm17 and you still have petrol to ride. As per testing, fill rm19 then I can go to 300km.
- The last thing is I like SBK style since I was a kid but I cannot afford that when I was in early teenage.

Hi all,

Actually Im considering buying the r15 for daily use to commute to work. Right now im using the Lc135 travelling almost 200km daily from Semenyih to Genting Highland. My kapchai already over 10years old & having so many issue right now (high temperature especially). Is the R15 suitable for long distance? basically im choosing to buy r15 due to its sporty design & low maintenance cost

*
Riding position may affect u a little.. but could be ok on u too

Its a lil fast compare to lc135 and injection will help a lot..
But u may consider to give an option for dual piston for your usage.. it could low ur rpm to climb genting too

Wut, R25 maintenance RM4k per year. Yesus H christ, My Gixxer 750 is not even half of that cost, I ride to work almost everyday. Better keep my Gixxer then, new bike quality nowadays has gone from bad to shit I guess.

R15 is not good for long distance. but Semenyih to Genting still ok, under 100km one way.
The vibration will make you hand numb because of single piston. if got more budget better go for double piston.
FC with R15 really good, full tank you can get 350km ~ 450km.
the best FC i got is 2.1L for 100km with speed only below 70kmh or rpm lower than 5000.

If you count in repairs it easily exceeds that.

I mean , I've been paying for a dead bike for a year now cuz I don't have 6 to 7k cash around to rebuild the engine.

Bro, I have tested the riding position on the r15, it is very aggressive, i go to work with a laptop bag on my back, overtime have you experience any back or waist strain riding the bike in a city settings, especially the red light stops, roundabout?

Eh guys i wanna ask ya, how is the maintenance cost of r15 compared to r25? Was thinking to get r25 but not worth it since I only gonna use it to go to work and short distance ride.

I ride to college with a laptop bag almost everyday, feels natural once you are accustomed to the riding position. Even in the beginning I did not feel any strain with/without laptop bag.

How do you gauge worth and not worth?

My daily ride to work is a 950cc bike, distance to office about 19km.
Worth it ?

If the road not jam or clear like highway then it's worth.
If like me distance only 3km (chowkit - titiwangsa) with jam giler somemore then not worth riding 950cc to work. Better use kapchai or scooter... LOL

dear owners... my experience riding bike has been limited to the normal ex5 and honda wave kapcai bikes...and only once i ride Jaguh for a while before selling it off...

have been admiring RXZ and FZ150 type of bikes when i was younger last time and now looks like R15 is the latest model...

any idea if i will struggle to ride this type of sports bike? previously i tried a bigger cc sports bike type from my friend's bike and i find it hard to handle...can't even feel comfortable turning the bike in a corner... but probably that bike was way too big for my experience....will it be easy for me to transition from kapchai bike to this R15?

thank you and appreciate inputs from the owners here...

then shouldn't be that much of a problem.... since the R15 is quite small and light....

but, a very big but, the riding position is very aggressive and it really sucks as a commuter bike. if that is going to be your only bike then just be aware that it is never going to be comfortable as your other options.

can it be your only bike that you ride to work/school everyday? ofcoz its possible. there are even people who commute on 600cc sportsbike.

i'll go out on a limp to say that the R15 is one of the best 150-ish cc of any bike category currently on the market, but it is also deeply compromised.

is this going to be your commuter?
