The usb solution? last time i checked the speed is 1.1 which people complaint are too slow, don't know if it's comparable to the ide now.. but i guess if its on par with dvd speed, better to use that. but like lakum said, compatibility is another issues.

The PS2 slim is actually meant to save spaces and for traveling.
