I'm currently in final year and I felt lost in my life after studying mbbs. I always think I made the wrong decision to study medicine. My current plan is to be successfully graduate from mbbs. If not, i even don't have a basic degree. And I keep pressing myself to be graduated, I worried similar problem occur in future. I don't know what job.I could do next. I don't know is it my personality or my ability not fit for medical pathway or just I hate the working environment. I struggle a lot in my mind these few years. Learning medical knowledge for.me it's okay, but I really hate the clinical environment. However, it's ok, I will try my best to complete mbbs and become lost again.

Please refrain from calling yourself 'Doctor'... Many of us in the medical fraternity find it apalling for a non-fully registered medical practitioner - ie: not finished/failed housemanship parading around calling themselves Dr. this and Dr. that... much worse, if the person never even registered with MMC to do housemanship... (these are really tak tau maluuu punya woraang) If you hate clinical environment - you can try join the academic pathway - go do Masters and then PhD in basic medical sciences (physio/anatomy/Biochem/etc) and become a lecturer... or apply for post-graduate diploma in education and teach primary or secondary school as a teacher - https://ecentral.my/dpli-um-2022/or go down the insurance pathway and become a medical underwriter... for medical underwriter, you will need to take additional courses like LOMA - https://www.loma.org/en/professional-develo...atalog/und-386/

QUOTE(toronto6160s @ Mar 10 2023, 12:44 PM) Thanks for the comments and the nice suggestions. I think my professors told us even u are not becoming the doctors. As long as u completed MBBS/MD,you are awarded with the title 'Dr'. If you have no shame, then go on and use the 'Dr' title... you will get in trouble soon enough with the Malaysian Medical Council. Actual medical doctors with full MMC registration, passed housemanship and can actually practice medicine under the law - will ridicule you for calling yourself 'Dr'.... time to call a more senior doctor in /k... what do you think Limeuu ? abuse of 'Dr' title? like some politicians in Malaysia? The Doctor designation is not a restricted title, and can be used by a variety of people....
The original use was for the Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs and other Doctorates).
The use for medical doctors dates back about 200 years...
In modern usage, it is used for medical doctors, dentists (most countries) and Veterinary Surgeons....
For medical doctors, it traditionally refers to Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP). However, there is no statute nor regulation that confines it to only RMPs. It wasn't an issue, as in the past, every medical graduate will be a RMP. Well, almost.
It is a recent phenomena in Malaysia that growing numbers of medical graduates are NOT RMPs for various reasons. Thus arise the question whether a medical graduate, who did not have a registration with the MMC can call themselves doctors.
Based on current laws and practices, they can.
However if they are not registered, they CANNOT treat patients. In normal usage, the public associates a DR. as RMP. Should any medical graduates (or any other doctors, eg PhDs) want to use the title, and they are NOT RMPs, they MUST identify themselves as NOT a RMP. Failure to do so, and if that results in some sort of treatment or believe that the Dr is a RMP, it will then contravene the Medical Act and an offense.
In most countries, the non RMPs are careful to distinguish themselves as NOT RMP. So they will call themselves Dr. James Watt, PhD, Clinical Psychologist or Dr. John Chen, PhD, Pharmacist, etc.
It is quite unique in Malaysia where those not qualified tries to get fake degrees, call themselves titles etc. It becomes particularly difficult when a MBBS graduate (valid qualification) but not registered, uses the title. Assumption will occur, unless the person constantly reminds others that he is NOT a RMP, cannot treat patients.

It used to be that in the UK, by academic tradition, Phd holders did not call themselves Doctors (although they were legally entitled to) but place Phd after their names. Only medical doctors could prefix their names with "Dr". Not sure how much that is followed now. Malaysia used to follow the same academic tradition. In the USA and Europe, it was considered normal to prefix "Dr" if you had a Phd. In fact, in Germany, the title "Dr" was so enticing that many Germans would continue to study a Phd just to have that title. A matter of prestige and pride for them. The late Tun Dr Ismail, was very proud of the fact that he was a medical doctor, and used to insist that his title Dr be place before any titles that he received. When asked why, he said I earned my "Dr" and I'm more proud of that than any titles given to me. Tun Ismail was the best Prime Minister Malaysia never had. QUOTE Tycoon Robert Kuok, a friend of Ismail's, would later remark that:
In my opinion, he was probably the most non-racial, non-racist Malay I have met in my life. And I have met a very wide range of Malays from all parts of Malaysia. Doc was a stickler for total fair play, for correctness; total anathema to him to be anything else. Every Malay colleague feared him because of this, including Mahathir.
