I've been a long time forum member here and I've seen people come and go here. When I was active over here, I saw more discussion and anticipation for strategy games. These days when I or the mod create a thread on a strategy game, it gets buried fast within a day to the next page.

My only conclusion is that strategy game fans in this forum have grown old and have less time to partake in the hobby plus post in these forums.

Younger gamers somewhat not attracted to strategy games hence we see a lack of interest in them, other than Dota 2 or LoL. But those gamers play those games exclusively.

Disclaimer, I have vested interest in this topic, but I'm mainly asking as a huge strategy gaming fan. Please do share your opinion on this topic. I genuinely would like to know.

Can give me some pointers or tips for this game? I bought & try to play it, but still clueless as heck after 4 hours. It seems wayyyy more complicated than Civilization (it should be similar to this right?). Somehow I have a tough time trying to learn this. What's a good starting clan, what are my priorities when I just start, what to look out for etc etc

I've only played Might & Magic, Civilization & Northgard. Those 3 are somehow friendlier to learn & pick up just by randomly clicking around.

RTS? ARTS (MOBA) or Turn Based?

I love RTS but Starcraft 1 is the only thing that gets me excited. I've been trying some Turn Based ones recently e.g. Civi5 since there ain't many RTS out there.

Yeah I think that's mostly it. Not much to contribute to this section of the forum.

All strategy games except MOBAs. You could try Homeworld: Desert of Kharak or Grey Goo. Recent in like past 2 years and quite good. More recent is Northgard but that's less about combat. More on economy. I'll have a review up for it soon.

Homeworld's interface or graphic somehow doesn't look interesting for me at the moment. But Grey Goo looks like my cup of tea! Added to my wishlist.

Northgard is pretty good, simple enough to pick up quickly yet complex enough to keep you hooked. But yea like you said it's more on village building, less on warfare. It's probably fair enough because managing the village itself is kinda demanding already. If the combat is more like Warcraft 3, then it'll be fantastic but not sure if normal players can manage both a demanding village & a demanding combat at the same time.

My all time fav games are;

1. Cities Skylines (with mods)
2. Simcity 4 (with mods)
3. All Civilization (I've played it since Civ 1)
4. Football Manager

I'm more into Cities Skylines now as the possibilities in the game is endless and the mod support is good.

So if it’s less of warfare, then it’s more towards city building?

What’s the win condition?

I kept on conquering nearby tribes but it seems redundant.

Endless Legend's main victory condition is completing the story quest for your faction. You can use the quests as a guide but it's not a tutorial, so some quests will be beyond what you can do. Need to build up to it.

How I summarise Endless Legend:
1) Early game is like Civ. Expand
2) Your first winter. Games starts to feel like a survival game as your resources will deplete faster and no wars during winter.
3) After winter, AI creeps start to 'creep' in no pun intended. You will feel the heat if you don't have a proper army.
4) Discover other factions and the game becomes more strategic. WHo can grab nearby resources first.

Basically, Endless Legend is a 4X strategy game made for fantasy RPG fans. It's about the quest and stories.

Yea I am a fantasy RPG fan, that's why I'm sold within just half a minute into its trailer haha.

I'll give it a try again some time later. Probably will play it more Civ style & just turtle until enemies come. Hopefully i can learn some basics. I just failed to understand what the heck I'm doing during the past few attempts lol, clueless to the max laugh.gif

Strategy covers quite a broad range, most will lump 4x, Civ, Total War and even Paradox type Grand Strategy games in it, and these seem to be quite popular / going strong still on Steam.

The niche one is traditonal RTS which is the one I'm going to rant about. Since the only big one is Starcraft, CoH2 and some other old RTS like AoE and SupComm. The others have very low online player base so not easy to find matches online unless organized via discord. Already suffered death by DOTA i think, and the focus (by devs and publishers) on pushing multiplayer mode with loot drops (to be the next SC/MOBA e-sports), leaving campaign only an afterthought feels bad. Also feel the console/mobile market creeping in now and making dumbed down RTS that you can play on the couch with two fingers.

It is also niche because most RTS are built for 1v1 balance and playing online is not very forgiving for newcomers. Many also don't like playing competitively and prefer co-op/comp stomp, and alot of new RTS don't allow modding or map making anymore which hampers replayability/longevity.

It depends on individuals I guess, just like board games, majority is just playing catan, a medium number pick up games like dracula, only a few play games like arkham horror. I have a lot of 4x games and total war games, play with most of my SG friends only a few from malaysia. Not sure here got community or not cause forum front page rarely see any 4x games.

I still play games from time to time, including RTSes, but not as much as last time when I was younger and up till the time I'm in my first job.

These are the RTS games I've played in the past and present:
1) Command & Conquer (original, Red Alert 1, 2 & 3, Tiberian Sun, Tiberium Wars)
2) Dawn of War 1 & 2
3) Company of Heroes 1 & 2
4) Homeworld
5) War in Conflict
6) Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
7) Halo Wars 1 & 2
