I've noticed it since i got my lcd, always thought it was due to your graphics card outputting more frames per second then your monitor's refresh rate. So my assumption was that v-sync just synced the frames your graphics card to the refresh rate on your monitor?
I am quite aware of tearing as well, but I have learnt to live with it.Turning on V-Sync will eliminate tearing. But your framerate will suddenly jump from very smooth to jerky when the action is intense. However, for games like Titan Quest, I definitely have to turn V-Sync on, or else it would be impossible for me to play. For FPS, I can live with tearing.
