Hi guys,

Just wanna share my experience and unleash my anger about my simple medical experience with some specialist.

I had a simple and small "tonsil stones", i can see with my bare eye, but i could not get it out myself, so i went to Sunway Medical to seek consultation and treatment with one of their very re-known ENT Specialist.

During the consultation, the ENT confirmed is tonsil stone, but refused to remove it for me. Instead, he is asking me to do Tonsillectomy (in plain english, surgical removal of my tonsil). Quoted me RM8000, and keep asking me to do it. I requested him :why don't you just remove my tonsil stone first, then i decide the op in other time. But he refused. I end up walking out Sunway Medical with a RM209 medical bill without a real treatment. WTF.

Yesterday, i went to see general doctor in USJ, show him my tonsil stone, the general doctor took out a metal stick from his tool box, inserted to my mouth, and get the tonsil stone out in just 5 seconds. I walked out the clinic with a happy face and RM25 medical bill.

I just wondering what the hell the ENT has done. I have been thinking they are more interested to do lot of surgical op to get good money.

This is very unprofessional.

Yet, he is so famous in USJ and Sunway area.

why the fuck would he remove your tonsil

tonsil is important in keeping your throat and mouth healthy

you're just gonna develop more problem after removing your tonsil

hence, more money to him i guess

Tonsil stones can easily be removed on your own - either you use a long object like a chopstick and apply pressure, or you wiggle around your tongue. Gargle with mouthwash first to loosen them and it should come out easily.

As far as the specialist's recommendation goes, removing your tonsils will prevent future irritation from tonsil stones. However, the tonsils exist for a reason - they catch dirt and prevent further infections such as sore throat from occurring. The worst tonsil stones do is give you bad breath, and you can work around this by just practicing proper oral care. You don't need to have them removed unless you regularly get tonsillitis.

Had a bad experience with one of the ENT specialist from Sunway too few years back. Wife had bad sinusitis for couple of months. And this Dr just prescribe something not relevant and suggested surgery. He did scope and it was very painful. Can't remember the bill since this was covered by company insurance.
Went to Putrajaya GH to see the ENT specialist - the Dr did came scope, and she didn't feel a thing. And he immediately gave his diagnosis and prescribe a strong antibiotics. And she recovered within couple of weeks. And we only paid RM2!

Not only that ENT did the nose and ear check for less than 1 minute...
Some ENT are not really worth it...

sunway hospital memang like that.

My cousin broke her wrist, but they say nothing. siap exray etc also say nothing. just wrap using those bandage.

balik to her mom's place in kelantan. who is a doc, see the xray, can clearly see the hairline fracture.

damn bodoh right?

oh one more thing, they charged her rm44 per hour for waiting. so in the bill ada rm88 for 2 hours of waiting at the waiting room.

Tonsillectomy
A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of tonsils. This procedure may be done using a scalpel, laser, or coblation device.

Performing this surgery for tonsil stones is controversial. Doctors who recommend tonsillectomy for tonsil stones tend to use it only for severe, chronic cases, and after all other methods have been tried without success.

lulz, must be the gag reflex.
I did tried the DIY method using chopstick, plastic spoon, the buttend of my tooth brush, but its easier said than done. The gag reflex is there for a reason. I do plan on getting waterpik. A lot of people recommend it for:
1) self cleaning for the teeth
2) works wonders removing tonsil stones via controlled water jet

Maybe he recommended the op because there are many crypts on your tonsils that can be a nidus to stone formation.

Time is money for those specialist.

Why the F shud he spend his time when all hes gonna get is a measly 200plus from u when u can just do those insurance cases and get thousands in single procedure.

Anyway, all specialist are like that. They didnt spend so much to study only to get GP fees.

This is not the point.

I do not mind paying the 8k op fee IF there is really necessary.

But if a doctor simply wanna push surgery for a simple and easy to treat medical condition, this is no ok, this is against the code of conducts they swear in before getting the license.

Performing this surgery for tonsil stones is controversial. Doctors who recommend tonsillectomy for tonsil stones tend to use it only for severe, chronic cases, and after all other methods have been tried without success.

Yes this. My little sister had to opt for minor surgery since all other treatment doesnt work. Kpmc in kajang. Honest specialist as far as i know.

thats the latest model and a certified brand. If u google in lazada, there's plenty of OEM brand that serves the same function for far less. laugh.gif
Omg, a toilet bidet?! dude, I thought you meant something like a water dispenser bidet.

This is not the point.

I do not mind paying the 8k op fee IF there is really necessary.

But if a doctor simply wanna push surgery for a simple and easy to treat medical condition, this is no ok, this is against the code of conducts they swear in before getting the license.
*
That is the point. Specialist are there to recommend u the most safe and complete procedure. They dont care about the costs.

Its like gng to service ur Mercedes Benz at Merc and then say dont want to follow their procedure.

how can he straight recommend surgery for such a simple medical condition.

it is like asking some one to cut his leg due to some minor injury.

sunway hospital memang like that.

*
wow, 1 hour wait kena charge rm44. might as well go to GH. Pay 1 ringgit, the waiting is free. No matter how many hours.

*
can pm the doctor name in Putrajaya GH?
went sunway ENT also. recommended surgery also.

totally agreed, this happened to my son as well.

the specialist and nurses even show me how to claim the medical insurance, you will need to stay in the medical center (doing nothing, just rest, play do anything you like) over few hours to qualify for the claim.

it is all money money money, no more real doctor.

This is how private hospitals make money to pay salary for doctors who are driving expensive BMW and Mercedes cars.

And always get second opinion from other doctors in other clinics or hospitals. Some doctors like to rip off patient's money.

For u is simple. For the specialist, its not. Besides, who is the specialist now? U or him?

There are alot of underlying factors in his decision making. What happens if it comes back, then u will also screw him.

As i said earlier, if its such a simple problem, y go to specialist when GP can remove in 5seconds?

Dont u know u specialists time is worth more than triple the GP? I already said, specialist time is very expensive. U dont go to see a specialist and tell him what to do. He is under no obligation to listen to u.

Once u step into his room, U listen to him. If u dont want to listen to him, then go GP.

Thats is why specialists are called consultants. They consult you. Not take instructions from patient. Got it?

both management not same
the general med just remove the stone on your tonsil
the ent want to remove your tonsil to prevent future tonsil problem
some tonsil stone after remove, can recur if the 'pocket' is not resected/removed
so ofcourse there's different procedure, different specialties and different cost
the gen med cannot do the tonsillectomy, its not his specialties
specialties is not cheap

*
i have met few ENTs and not even one of them ask to do surgical to remove my tonsil as i keep having tonsilitis, their reason were as long as you dont have breathing problem, you no need to do removal surgery.

though it was my sinus problem that causing the tonsil to sore, once im able to manage my sinus problem, it have been quite sometime i didnt kena tonsilitis.

Kevin,

You miss-understand.

If i know GP can do, i will go straight to GP already in the 1st place.

The 1st GP i called, said they do not do, ask me to go ENT sure can do.

I am not complaint about the fee (please read my original post), I complaint the ENT took my money without removing the stone, and yet asked me to do surgery.

Got it.

consider this a lesson lor. next time can get multiple opinions even from general doc.

doc 1: I dont treat this, YOU MUST GO see specialist
doc 2: not sure, MAYBE YOU CAN see specialist
doc 3: not sure until I see you and check on the spot.
