For apps, I only kept useful ones like shopping apps or Google apps.
For photos, videos and music? Here's what I did using an old Kingston Mobilelite Wireless Media Reader G2 stashed away in the drawer for years.
1. Purchase an app called FileExplorer Pro.
2. Reset the MWMRG2 to factory default.
3. Configure WiFi with security. Default is open WiFi which is not advisable.
4. Format USB flash drive as exFAT. There are 2 media slots for this unit. USB or SD. Both must be in FAT or exFAT format. HFS not supported.
In my case, I've both Sandisk 128GB USB flash drive and Sandisk 64GB micro SD lying around. Once done formatted both to exFAT, I copied some TV series over. Took forever because USB 2.0 is damn slow. And for some reason if using USB 3.0, the Sandisk USB flash drive will heat up and disconnect multiple times.
5. Now, all done. Plug both media to MWMRG2 and power it ON. Wait around 3-4 mins to proper boot up.
6. The default Kingston app sucks! Kept crashing here and there. Plus, Kingston stopped updating it for 11 months. U only need the app to change the WiFi settings. So keep it around for a while.
7. Fire up FileExplorer Pro and click + at the top left side.
8. Select NAS and wait for few seconds and MOBILELITE will appear.
9. Click on it and u have 2 drives - USB or SD. Either one will do.
10. FileExplorer Pro will play almost any format unsupported by Apple - MKV for example. If using the default Kingston app to play, it will crash... many times!
Now, I've a mobile media player for travel and flying. Yes, my MWMRG2 is always on. If the flight is WiFi friendly (most do), leave it on and enjoy the movies. Battery will last for approx 3-4 hours. Enough for 1 movie. If need more, connect a power bank to it.
Next will be testing the Sandisk Connect Wireless Stick. Found the 16GB variant has a 16GB micro SD inside. Maybe can upgrade it to 64GB? Will buy one first. It is around RM 60 now. Previously much higher. This device will allow iOS users to backup entire camera folder to external device. No need to pay for expensive iCloud storage fees.
