Hello and welcome to this thread

Well, this is not another Nvidia Geforce 8 Series gaming thread.
This thread is mainly for video/multimedia users who currently have any Geforce 8 card and actively making/converting/playing HD movie.

Related Link: Anand's Hardware - http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2977

What to discuss here?

- H.264 Decoding/Playback and CPU Utilization
- H.264 Encoding/Recompress and CPU Utilization
- H.264 Players and their CPU Utilization
- H.264 Encrypted content hardware and playback benchmark
- BluRay or HD DVD content playback benchmark
- H.264 Capable hardware with PureVideo 2 HD accelerators - Geforce 8500 and 8600
- Benchmark of Nvidia Geforce 8 cards vs. ATi R600 on HD content topics above

Screenshots of encoding/decoding/playback benchmark and CPU utilization are most welcome.

Gamer's 3D Benchmark or FPS benchmark on games is strictly forbidden as this thread is not for gaming stuff.

afaik, g84/g86 only features h.264 decoding capability, no way it can handle encoding/conversion to h.264 format

oh ya does HD2900XT has this feature?

There is no hardware encoder for H.264 encoding purpose on both R6xx neither G85/86 series as far as I'm concern.

when playing purevideo2 HD demo on wmp11, the wmp11 cpu usage is very low (<5%), but then there's one more process running,

i guess the "protected pipeline" protects the decoding of the video from the input of raw video data to displayed on the screen.. to prevent any illegal content copying in any of the stages

Hopeful you guys can answer some questions which i have in mind.

I do watch media encoded using h.264 codec in different containers such as .mkv and .mp4 (can't remember exactly if .avi was used as well for h.264).

So if i do have a GeForce 8 series card, the decoding will be much smoother ?
Which media player must i use to take advantage of this feature of the 8-series ? Can i use any other player ?

Thanks.

Smoother yes, fast seeking... most importantly your CPU usage will be very low which means even lower end PC can play 1080p or 720p h264 files smoothly. smile.gif

It's hardware decoded... which i think means any media player will do. It will automatically detect h264 video file and decodes it no ? Correct me if i'm wrong.

those HD game and movie traillers are encoded in h.264 rite...? i can see it smooth enough on ATI Radeon X550 d wor... unsure.gif so i think decoding should be easy... encoding should be a lil headache... rite...? ohmy.gif

No. The media player has to recognize the special hooks in the drivers and interface with them. It's a wonder why microsoft has not standardized this interface after all the work they put into vista and dx10.

h264 in standard definition is easy going for modern proc.
but different story when it comes to HD format such as BD or HD DVD

ohmy.gif I see.

MPC ftw. I dunno if it can interface with the card. What if you use CoreAVC codec ?

Added on July 3, 2007, 3:33 amHmm guess not. Nero Showtime 3 or Cyberlink H264 Player.
