QUOTE(su8aru @ May 21 2007, 01:41 AM) the max is only 200%.. but Naza n AP king crony sold the vehicle at 300%... sheesh, correct your facts dude. The max is 300% on the official customs.gov.my list.CKD Honda Civic might only pay 40%-60%of tax from it origin price.. Added on May 21, 2007, 6:39 am QUOTE(su8aru @ May 21 2007, 01:54 AM) su8aru, AP tax is calculated from a reference list of used car prices. The tax is not lower. Just based on market value.Guys, where did you get the information about the 5 year rule? This post has been edited by ezralimm: May 21 2007, 06:39 AM |

You must own the car for 9 mnths to qualify..
70% tax off the intial retail price ... after 6 years old.. 10% off the remaining price every year after.. So very little tax if the car is 7 to 8 years old... |

what is stated is mostly right... in the process of exporting one myself from Japan
the percentage I quote is only from the intial value - minus depreciation x tax... example...100k car after 6/7 years 30k x 300%(varaiable according to cc and category) would cost about 120k in all.. below 2l car 7/8 yo value at 30k usually has 25 to 30k in tax... so 60k... the car is not transferable for 2 years after import This post has been edited by BeastX: May 21 2007, 07:47 AM |

QUOTE(ezralimm @ May 20 2007, 10:18 PM) QUOTE(ezralimm @ May 20 2007, 10:48 PM) ? They sold it underpriced! If AP requires 140% to 300% tax, there's NO WAY their cars could be that cheap. QUOTE(kelvio @ May 20 2007, 11:17 PM) actually they miss used the AP, AP is only for ppl working/studying overseas to bring back the car, ''dunno how'' the car deallers can get so many AP as i know 1 person only can have 1 AP, last time i heard they sell the AP for RM10k for 1, so the cost of the car in overseas is cheap, and the TAX for AP car is only 140% above where the GOV normally tax 400% above for imports car so in total plus shipping AP cars is still cheaper than the imports QUOTE(Chinoz @ May 21 2007, 12:33 AM) Don't think you can escape paying taxes even if you have an AP. As someone mentioned earlier, AP just allows you to import your car to Malaysia and drive it out of the port. The controversy is the conditions that the AP's can be give out were totally overlooked when these people were awarded the AP's. There are a few types of AP's where for importing CBU cars and CKD cars, there were conditions that to be granted an AP you first need to have a company with a certain number of sales branches or a manafacturing facility BUT the AP's were given to people who weren't even in the automotive industry let alone have a single sales branch for that matter.Regarding the controversy, I wasn't in the country at that time so I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I think it was because APs were being "bought by certain parties" and handed out in excessive amounts? I'm sure they must make quite a healthy profit from imported car sales, even after paying taxes, justifying the 5ish figure price paid per AP. Secondly if i remember correctly some parties were grossly underdeclaring the value of the cars OR declaring them as second hand cars/recond cars when they were actuallly new to avoid the taxes there. Thridly the number of AP's that were awarded were astounding in the region of hundreds to ONE single person only who then took the liberty of SELLING the AP's which is NOT allowed because they are meant to be used by the person to whom it was granted too. Last but not least, all those who were granted AP frivolously were some way or other related to a certain minister in a certain department. http://paultan.org/archives/2005/07/24/how...ke-their-money/ http://paultan.org/archives/2005/07/29/an-ap-kings-home/ This post has been edited by rcracer: May 21 2007, 12:06 PM |

Ok, so i guess the conclusion is that even with an AP i'll still have to pay 140% tax on the market value of the car. Is that right?
That was a very good explanation of the AP controversy. Thanks. I always wondered what all the fuss was about. This post has been edited by ezralimm: May 21 2007, 06:44 PM |

Ok, I am going to UK to study, since you cannot beat the AP system anyway to take advantage of it?
In UK there are lots of pre-registered cars there-where the dealer registers the cars using their own name to boost sales performance. Pre-registered cars are then sold to you but its considered 2nd hand. And almost all the time the cars are brand new. So 2nd hand lebih murah? So can bypass the 9mth rule? BTW, if you buy the car, ship it, make sure don't put anything in the car, they will throw it away. Only manual can put in the car, the rest cannot, so don't think this is one cheap way of shipping some of your stuff back cause customs will just throw it away. Cushions/ornaments also cannot put. Well on value I think it depends on person. Bring in Euro Accord Type-R or something not sold here than thats rare, but still can be servicable by authorized workshops. |

You have to own the car for 9 months before you're eligible to bring it back. So no you can't bypass the 9 month rule.
The bigger the CC of the car, the higher the tax you have to pay upon shipping it to Malaysia. I think the only way you can benefit from this is to bring in something not sold in Malaysia. Price wise, I don't think you'll save much (if any) compared to a car that's available locally. |

Thanks for the replies guys.
Bottom Line: I will have to pay 140% tax for a sub2L light (>1100kg) car I plan to get soon. This will definitely affect my choice of vehicle. A manual 1.4 Getz is going for AUD14000 (RM42k) driveaway. While a Corolla is about AUD23500 (RM70k) for a 1.8L Manual. If it was possible to bring a car back with low/reduced tax, i would lean towards the toyota. But for now the getz seems like a better deal for me. |

As of March 22nd 2006... The maximum tax charged is only 165% for above 3L ... no longer 300%
customs.gov.my have not update their site in a long time... 2 years at least... still use old 2005 calculation 130% for below 2L engine... no matter van/car/4wd. source: http://paultan.org/archives/2006/03/24/nap-tax-rates/ This post has been edited by BeastX: May 22 2007, 06:22 PM |

I thought to "gain" on importing it has to be used luxury cars as they are cheaper there than they are here, even the cost of bringing one back is cheaper than a used model here.
