PETALING JAYA, June 4 — Malaysians make up the largest number of visa overstayers in Australia, according to the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Between 2016 and 2017 alone, 10,000 Malaysians overstayed their visas, followed by China (6,500) and the US (just over 5,000), reported Australian site SBS News.

Previously, British backpackers were on top of the list.

Currently, there are 62,000 people overstaying their visas and living illegally in Australia.

Ramesh* from Malaysia, is one of them.

The 28-year-old told SBS News he is living in fear because he does not have a valid visa and only leaves his home in Western Sydney to go to work.

He doesn’t see the doctor when he falls ill, nor does he drive because he is concerned about applying for a licence without legal documentation.

That fear multiplies each time he sees the police.

“I get nervous, I get scared, like, you know traumatised,” he told SBS News.

Ramesh arrived on Australian shores with a three-month tourist visa last year.

He said a family friend promised to get him a working visa for A$2,000 (RM6,077), which he borrowed money for, but it did not work out.

Before he came to Australia, Ramesh said he had no knowledge of how the visa system worked and if it was legal or illegal to work on a tourist visa.

After unsuccessfully extending his tourist visa, he decided to remain in Australia illegally.

“It’s like I have that guilty feeling, like I’m doing wrong,” said Ramesh.

Ramesh desperately wants to get out of this rut as soon as possible.

11,000 people stay for a duration between two and five years while 6,600 people stay between 15 and 20 years.

“I don’t want to extend, like other people are doing two or three years in Australia.”

Having been living illegally in Australia for one year, Ramesh plans to return to Malaysia later this year after he has cleared his personal debts including the money he owes for the visa which never materialised.

To make ends meet, he does car detailing where he is paid cash-in-hand on weekdays and does odd jobs during the weekend — his boss does not know he is staying and working in Australia illegally.

“I don’t want to get caught and go back. I just want to go back on my free will. Rather than get caught and have trouble with the police,” said Ramesh, who exercises caution about revealing his illegal status to others.

Between 2016 and 2017, the Department of Home Affairs tracked down 15,885 people who overstayed their visas — they were either kicked out of Australia or placed in detention.

Visa overstayers who are caught can face deportation, detention and bans from re-entering Australia for at least three years.

Ramesh does not want to get caught at the airport when he tries to leave Australia, so he plans to hand himself over to immigration authorities after he visits the Malaysian embassy.

Having learnt his lesson, he does not want others to go through his living nightmare.

“Try to get information from the officials like the embassy or immigration [Department of Home Affairs], rather than jump into something you don’t know. Rather than being illegal, being afraid,” he said.

If they are rich, why would they need to overstay their visa. You can even get PR easily anywhere if you got money, just need to invest certain amount in the country.

Just admit you wanna hire cheap labour la. You want us to believe that he has never filled in any paper work ? You have never examined his eligibility to work ? Don't you need to take PAYE and/or other tax deductions and super ? How is it possible for them to not know ?

now malaysia got ETA .... soon, it will be harder to get d ...
even now can say around 10% of ETA 601 applied will not get immediate approval - have to provide more documents ...

even in future, europe will require ETAIS d ... around 2019/2020

those who overstay - you will be banned from re entering for next 3 years ... and after that, you still need to make sure you dont owe the aussie gov anything ... while waiting for your court case, for example, they will charge you for staying in the immigration centre

and probability of you being black listed from entering another country ? also high cause while filling forms, they will ask, "ever black listed or overstayed your visit to another country"

Pros:
Aussie fresh grad easily 55k AD per annum.
Aussie is 9999x bigger than SG.
Aussie scenery is like watching LOTR.
Medical is good and affordable for PR/.
Aussie all speak 1 language, even Asian speak English, much more easier to communicate.
Aussie properties affordable (except big city)
Weather is marvelous except summer.
Less crime, less pollution.
Many single mom angmoh, if you know what i mean.

Cons:
Service slow.
Everything 9-5 including mall.
Nightlife is boring, only bars and disco open, even cinema close at 10PM.
Food not much variety.
Competitive job market, as many foreigners looking for job as well.
PR not easy to get unless ur profession is in demand.
Race, religion discrimination is true but only in some places.

even though I've obtained Australian citizenship, I've yet to remand my Malaysian one. I still have few properties in Malaysia that is collecting rent, giving passive income. I need to know Malaysia's condition and politic, easiest would be through forum

I also do read mainland China's and Taiwan's forum, looking for opportunities. I did found one investment opportunity in Taiwan. going there end of this year to discuss the details

as a Malaysian, you're welcome to visit Australia forum too (whirlpool forum), it's kinda boring but, maybe you can learn more about that country

most of the time i interact with fellow Australians at an international forum where we share same interest (bodybuilding.com misc section)

Better to stay in your own country, than go and over-stay illegally in another country.

In Australia, if you are legal, you can make better money, sure.

But if you are not legal, you will be exploited, and live in fear. It simply does not make sense to be an overstayer.

lol, kak tinggal di down under lebih 6 tahun, balik 7 tahun lalu. Terlalu banyak bogan masa kak tinggal sana, no matter how well they treat you in front, they will always say bad things behind, the prejudice is always there, even against their own native boong.

Though Malaysia also has the same sentiment, at least its mutual for all races and culture, lol.

Dont look down on others if you are rich, smart or capable, the poor, dumb and disabled didnt ask to be that way, free will is scientifically invalid, if you were born as them, you would be just like them, bertaubatlah. lol

Bogan's opinion doesnt matter since they're drunk 90% of the time

heck you need to thank those bogan's because they usually don't work so they don't compete with you in job openings biggrin.gif

i dont usually look down on people being dumb or poor. but i do look down on bogans and aboriginals that are drunk 24/7 and living on centrelink. Also those that are stupid but arrogant.

Somehow I didnt came across much disrespect, in the gym, at office, at various events.

Maybe compared to your era, a lot of people have got used to a multiracial Australia. Yesterday morning an old Australian, professor emeritus, he said Australia need skilled migrants, and it was indeed built upon the effort of migrants.

the phobia, is all caused by these bunch of illegal one.

Muscle and size is a primitive, albeit effective deterrent against discrimination, to be fair. lol

But only when they are within listening distance, all sorts of terrible words and ideas uttered when you turn your backs.

Malaysian illegals usually keep to themselves and their work, no matter how abused, its the lebs and afrikan that get on the front page of the news for various vices, crimes and occasional terrorism. lol

Are your family well to do? Just curious.

I needed almost a million ringgit for my expense and fees at the UK, same goes to my brothers and sister, 4 personal in total, almost 4 million ringgit in total

Obviously my parents couldn't afford that, government is dumb enough not to help, even though I've scored straight As from primary all the way to the end of secondary school. Lucky enough the school itself waived my fees, and lucky enough later I secured a job in Australia to pay for my brother's fee. Rinse and repeat and I expect my brother to pay for my sister's fee after he start working.

Institutions in Malaysia all quota quota... Middle class is too rich enough that they won't offer you a decent course of your choice at top Malaysian institutions, so people have to turn to universities like Monash Malaysia or Nottingham Malaysia. Try to perform well and wish for a scholarship + transfer to main campus

Its one fucking hell of an effort to escape the middle class.

For profit universities in Malaysia get a good buggering on glassdoor. Seems that the overseas branches here in Malaysia are corrupt. Yup, even Monash. icon_idea.gif

Makes me so happy I have PR overseas just by being born. hmm.gif

Really? Honestly, I'm PH supporter and I say let all these pengkhianat negara kena jailed overseas and don't come back better.
Unless they did postal vote just to be involved with Malaysia, whether to BN or PH I don't care.

exactly how much can those malaysian banggalas earn working illegally in aussie?

say AUD20 per hour working illegally at the farm

AUD20 * 40 hours * 4 weeks = AUD3200 per month = around RM10k gross

not exactly luxurious, but good opportunity to squeeze through and save RM5k a month

After 3 years, can bring back RM180k to merehsia

Decent amount, but not exactly life-changing either

No wonder when you go through Aussie immigration they'll ask a lot of questions regarding your stay.
