Folks,

Just obtained a W201 Mercedes or known as 190E, witn the M102 2.0 Fuel Injection Engine under the hood with 4 Speed Auto box...

Offcoz, being more than 25 years old car, do have some home work need to iron it out, any particular workshop specialized in Old Merc?

Also what is the common problem of this car? if any sifus out there know do also let me know..

Preferable around KL, PJ area if possible..

Sorry for reviving a not so old thread.

@ajaibman How does the 190E 2.0 compare to modern car, say Honda City or even Honda Accord. Is it as comfy or more comfy then them? How about NVH?

Could you share how much you paid for the car and what repair have you done (cost too)? smile.gif

Depends on what the condition of the car to start with.. as expected old car... you do to invest to repair it in some degree.

Comfy level... as expected over engineered Mercedes .. the Great grandpa of C class .. is marvelous.. it has multilink suspension same as the bigger brother W124.. but in tiny body...

I would say compare to Jepunis car.. its one level higher.. even you can bring it touge to Genting while your GF still can comfortable playing with her phone...

It just the 2.0 OHV configuration engine is outdated to modern standard it produce measly 122 HP and 173 of Torque.. if you really want to speed consider the 2.6 6 cylinder engine or transplant the Multivalve 2.2 from W124. the saving grace of 2.0 is when you pay the roadtax...

I did whole lot of restoration which cost more than the time i purchased the car before.. it ranges to 15k just to restored all.. Those multilink suspension and bushing can cost 3k++ alone front and back.. but its all Germany stuffs...

Well.. most of the mechanical part has been complete rebuilt, just worry about the electrical wiring since its old car...

Had tendency to overheat due to the clutch fan can not accommodate the modern days traffic jam in KL, but easily resolved by adding 2 big MOFO electric fan in front to push the air through ...

now the sunroof showing sign of leaking due to unnatural rainfall climate changes weather...

Some of the parts you need to diligently look from chop shop like those driveshaft and axle.. (which better change than rebuild).. but majority of the parts still available either from Germany, EU or Taiwan..

Yes, you should. Then you'll realise what "over engineered" means. I wish the driver's side wing mirror were bigger, as there is a lot of blind spot.

However, be prepared to suffer a bit, as the car is old and you should expect the maladies of old age.

Expect the power of 1.5NA with FC of 2.5TC engine if you opt for the M102 2L petrol engine. And the 4-speeder auto defaults to 2nd gear when moving from stationary unless you manipulate the gear lever (D>P>L>D, iirc) or you floor the accelerator pedal (literally flooring it).

Can't compare engine power with modern car. But I like the idea that it's low power, it's meant for cruising. And it's low power will change your driving style to a more relax one.

What most important is the NVH, if it is as good as modern C or D segment car, then I'll seriously consider it for my as my next car (or a manual Perdana V6).

15k to restore the whole things seems reasonable. Assume you got the car for 10k, total cost amount to 25k only!! A fully functional and comfortable cruiser.

Enjoy your ride and thanks for sharing.

The NVH.. mine one still much better than the new Myvi when cruising 100km/h.. me not joking.. just the sunroof now start to show some leak after a Torrential rain..

if you opt for latter model.. like 1992 and above.. it start from 1st gear with addition of ABS.. and electronic ignition timing with knock sensor.. however more electronic, can translate to more headache..

Also the latter model were equipped with biodegradable wiring harness, same like he W124 Multivalve engine version (E200, E220 masterpeice)...

Not quite accurate. There are post-92 models with ABS which 4-speed auto starts from 2nd gear.

Nice 190E you have there bro!

My mum still uses her W124 as a daily driver too. These cars are basically built to last if well maintained.
