Every 3 pages in Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 thread you get to see ppl asking "Is this game out yet?".
Can't blame them either, this thread is 113 pages already. 20 more we get V2, and the beta isn't even out yet. New LYN record me think.

Guys, today i found an interesting read.
A Legacy of Distinction.

This guy hit it on the spot;
"StarCraft’s real innovation over the years has been the gameplay itself. The innovation was the potential of the game for boundless outcomes, but even more that these outcomes are almost exclusively a function of player skill. The innovation in gameplay was this: the player’s mind, and the player’s hands, against another’s mind, and another’s hands. The function of all the complexity and purity in the game is this simplistic result."

That's the point I've been trying tell over and over in this thread. Starcraft 2 can introduce many new features 'or so called innovation', but such artificially made-up 'innovation' won't guarantee long term success like its predecessor. One example i can think of is DoW. Capturing requisition point "artificially" creates a gameplay mechanics in which you need to move out rather than turtling inside your base. Notice the word "artificial" there. Of course when it's still new, such mechanics are nice to watch. But after a while, if there's not much choice left for players to innovate, people(spectators) will realize that's all there is to the game. Lack of variety will kill the game slowly.

In contrast to popular belief, innovation in RTS actually are not entirely dependent on developers side. Its the innovation from players that made this game so successful. Im Yo-Hwan and Kang Min creativity is the real innovation of Starcraft. They made Starcraft what it is today. Blizzard's challenge is to develop a platform or game design so that new innovation can be materialized by newer generation of Starcraft 2 players, even after 10 years of its released. In creating the game design, there's no such thing as "obsolete". Just because its a thing of the past like SBS and manual mining, it does not mean its irrelevant in this time and age.

That's how most Starcraft players and those who follow Korean pro-gaming see but others don't.  So non-believers, time to rethink.
