packet loss is the biggest issue currently. If 25% of your packets are being lost, they have to be re-transmitted. This increases pings, and makes downloads stutter. If you're losing 25% of your packets before you even leave Malaysia, chances are you will lose even more packets when being routed through the international community.
This is a tell-tale sign of an overloaded network. Packet loss happens because a piece of hardware cannot respond in a timely manor to the request it has been given. Packet loss is even worse than high pings because of the re-transmission involved. A user will hardly notice a few hundred milliseconds, but they will definitely feel the pain of a re-transmission.
A failed packet takes over one full second to transmit. Let's say you have a 100 packet file. That will be 25 extra seconds of downloading at a 25% packet loss rate. A 100 packet file is barely the size of an MP3.
TMNet = overloaded. International community is not the issue, Malaysian infrastructure is.

QUOTE(SeanWong @ Aug 25 2009, 12:59 PM) MX510 always getting full speed i never see him being affected by whatsoever upgrading/maintenance/cable fault/conflicker worm/etc.. from TM I am sure that he is affected internationally. Some users simply do not interact with many problem areas. Test the following for an example:

QUOTE(andrew9292 @ Aug 25 2009, 04:16 PM) same here... but is there any datacenter or important servers in San Diego? if not then its pointless having a fast conenction there i guess.. if i remember correctly there is quite a big one at dallas... i dont much about this, mayb those that do VPN should know where are the important links/routes that TM use to plan their servic. I remember trace route last time i saw and address and it went though Los Angeles and Dallas... Quite a few medium-sized (sony online entertanment is one i use a lot), but that's not the point. The point is that TM's issue of being overloaded affects everyone. Some more than others. Jaring users have a substantially lower ping to San Diego, and nearly 0% packet loss. The main point to realize here is that TM is overloaded and has poor routing. This affects everyone.

QUOTE(MX510 @ Aug 25 2009, 11:38 PM) There was a declining in speed this evening due to cabling in Keramat area, now everything is back to normal :-) Still lots of packet loss to first few hops, and DNS timeouts. I guess that's normal

QUOTE(liciece @ Aug 26 2009, 01:04 PM) I have only copper connection too.The cs and front counter person in TM point said the same thing to me.They have lack of knowledge. I just tried to let the technician put my line on 4M to have a try for some day.If it works well,I will then directly upgrade the package to 4M-currently is 2M combo. I hope the technician could help me set it up in this evening. TM told me to upgrade to 4M there is downtime of 3+ days. I did not want to go without internet for 3+ days. Also, I know that the 4M line will have same international issues so it would be pointless. 4M will not help surfing, gaming, etc..

QUOTE(liciece @ Aug 26 2009, 03:01 PM) If you are using 1Mbps,it will give you a 3+ days of downtime.IF you have already 2Mbps,I think your dslam could be easily set to 4M. About the international issue, some of 4M users say that they have less problem. So I just try it because now I have paid RM140 per month, upgrade to 4M will only cost another RM20 per month. Not a big deal, but it is possible to bring some change. I welcome any 4M user to test and prove me wrong It depends on time of day, but right now lot of US is bad.

QUOTE(cannavaro @ Aug 27 2009, 05:59 PM) Suddenly my speed has been upped to 2Mbps from 1.5Mbps. I don't get it. I applied for 4Mbps and after I was told the application was approved, I noticed higher d/l speed (from 175k/b max to 210 k/b max) the day after or so. I think they were testing the line or something? Then when the technician came to 'install' my 4Mbps he said my line cannot get 4Mbps. On the service acceptance form my 'SNR Checking' is stated as 14db, and 'Attenuation' is 48db. When I login to my modem: Surely this is good enough for 4Mbps? It wouldn't matter anyway. You would just get cap. Better to use 2M and get cap than pay for 4M and get same cap
