Has anyone calibrated the Onyx screen and have Adobe RGB and SRGB scores available?

Unfortunately no lol. I'm not confident enough to appear personally on stage like that.

If I ever have a video out, it'll just be my voice and my gloved hands lol, but FO4 (and work) is stalling that a bit lol. My proper long ass text review is practically finished though, and I just need to insert some pics into it.

Nice to finally have somebody talking about the Onyx though, even if his CB scores are pretty low as I'm getting consistent 1000++CB scores. But I'll just chalk that up to configuration differences.

But you do plan on making a vid review, right? I imagine yours to be scripted much better than that one! And while i'm on the subject (and pardon my ignorance), but is this not a Malaysian site - how come everyone speaks English like you're all native Englanders (better actually)!! I can only guess that the education system there is amazing :-)

Nah, the Edu system is pretty normal. it's just that a lot of the folks who visit this here parts (Lowyat.Net) are usually able to speak okay English... most of the time anyway.

In general though, being former subjects of the Crown, we (Malaysians) are pretty decent when it come to English... but outside the urban areas, it's not as rosy - but there will be people who can cobble up basic conversation nonetheless.

English is, after all, our second official language (as funny as that may sound lol).

As for my vid review, expect it to take a while as I figure out how to actually record it lol (keep in mind that the previous Keyboard Sound Test thing was my first tech-related video recording EVER lol).

But the text one should be ready as soon as I find extra time in between saving the Commonwealth from the horrors of the Institute (FO4 reference lol).
*
I had no idea it was the second official language. In fact I know next to nothing about Malaysia, but since I've been on here i've being paying more attention to the latest election news!
Right, time to tuck into that review of yours :-)

the fans. oh my the fans.. i had some initiall stuttering with the mouse in the beginning, but im assuming it was due to the updates in the background.

so far after a day it seems to be good for the work im doing.

screen seems abit warm to me. is there anyway to change that?

and the fanns.. oh have i mentioned the fans? its very very loud...
*
When comparing the fan noise in this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-h6bcAlEqU&t=295s to dave2d's fan noise recordings of all of his 8750h slim n lights, there does't seem to be too much in it. This seems like the biggest technical blip with this series. I'm seeing in all reviews that even at idle theres 'ambient' noise.
(i even considered drilling a few extra holes in the chassis lol)

The updated EC/BIOS helps a lot, TBH. Especially due to the fact that you get a BIOS "switch" to tune between quieter + throttled running and loud + unthrottled performance. Heck, even tuned for performance the new EC is pretty quiet at idle.

Also, compared to the "silent" rivals (namely the GS65 and the Aero) the GK5CN (even on the current, outdated Oynx EC that I ran the review in) runs slightly cooler, so yeah it's pretty much a give and take situation. Plus don't forget due to the lower heat you can tune the manual fan curves for lower noise and STILL run cooler then the others (on the shipped EC anyway, after the update I don't really think you'll be needing the custom curves).

And no, don't drill holes. It's just the fan curves, the unit itself actually runs cooler then its rivals (as I've mentioned before) so it's pretty pointless to drill holes.
*
Does it run at it's quietest when streaming or playing movies? I'm not clear on the notion of light useage - whether streaming/playing films counts as light.

Fans don't seem to be running as I'm watching videos (on Potplayer) on the internal panel (aka, accelerated by the IGPU). At most, maybe JUST the CPU fan is running, but barely (you don't really hear it unless you put your ear next to the keyboard).

File played is a 720p HEVC2 clip though, so load is pretty light (especially with CFL-H as it has internal HEVC decode acceleration), but yeah, I guess that answers your question. Just don't stream 4k though it and expect it to run similarly quiet though.

But damn, now that I'm having a video played on this thing, the VA panel is actually not bad at all TBH, despite my reservations about the colour being inferior to the 144hz panel. Guess a good sample of the Chi Mei is pretty decent indeed.

BTW, the moment you plug in an external display, expect the GPU fan to start running as well as all external video is routed through the DGPU. Not that this is exclusive to the Onyx / GK5CN either - my Clevo P950 used to do the exact same thing.

Sure it's bad for battery life but hey, at least we get the opportunity to use external G-Sync.

Oh cool. Thanks for testing that. Itching to order mine, but will hold out until Illegear come back with further info on the battery.

Sorry, back to the fans again... I can see that there's mesh underneath and also vents around the rear. Where doe the hot air come out? Thinking whether it'll be content running quietly on my lap or in bed on top of soft sheets (as opposed to on a flat surface.. (soz for nit-picky questions blush.gif )

this kinda making me miss my mac.

Last year I bought a my first desktop PC after being a Mac user since 2009. For content creation apple just weren't offering value for money anymore, but i soon discovered that Windows is so much more unstable out of the box than Mac OS. You have to figure more out loads more yourself and at first I was really quite miffed at the difference (I had a BSOD after a few weeks of using it and lost everything)...but a year on i've ironed out the creases, done a little overclocking even, and now i'd never consider go back to apple for computing (though am curious about their new CPU). The growing pains of the Mac-Win transitions are real, but in my experience they were totally worth it. Soldier on!

Awesome news for the battery configuration, but I'm abit curious as to why the 1060 is not supported, power draw requirements?
*
Hmm, 1060 vs battery life..tough one.
The 1050ti is roughly equivalent to the rx580 4gb, right?

I believe it's 1060 + 2.5" drive vs. bigger battery (30% more? additional 1.5 hours?)

This is true

I wonder if you're just writing an essay or web browsing, can't you just turn the fans off completely?

You actually can, in a way. You can adjust the custom curves in the Command Center to lowest, and it shouldn't bother you too much.

But yeah, completely off fans, I don't think so unfortunately.
*
On this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-h6bcAlEqU&t=295s - he goes through 5 levels of fans and then the boost mode (so 6 in total). Is no.1 (which is around 40 dBA) the lowest you refer to?

I guess so. Funny that my idle fans never actually get to 40dba, or at least to my ears.
*
I think 40dba must be almost silent, same score as all the others except the MSI which is apparently silent at 35.

Hi bbhing98, the battery runtime for the Onyx is approximately around 3-4 hours under normal surfing. However, we will introduce a battery back upgrade for the laptop (can extend up to 5-6 hours under normal surfing) but the larger battery will occupy the space of the 2.5" drive slot later.

The color coverage for the standard and the 144Hz IPS panels are 100% sRGB and 99% AdobeRGB, rated at 300nits on peak brightness. However, you can further improve the color output by performing the color calibration procedure which can improve the color accuracy to be as close as the colors on printed material (eg: photo/poster printing).

For the random shutdown bug, I believe that the latest BIOS & EC version will help to resolve the issue. However, the phenomenon would only be apparent on selected configurations of Onyx. For the screen bleeding issue, usually we will rectify by performing a bezel re-adjustment or a screen replacement if it is caused by manufacturing (depends on the root cause & the severity of the issue), hope this clarifies.
*
If the screen is the 'X-Rite i1Pro 2', notebookcheck have reviewed this panel here - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigabyte-Aero...w.215364.0.html . They have measured Adobe RGB at 60% and SRGB 92% ... only fair to get the stats right if you're considering it to support useage that requires professional print-based colour accuracy. Thought tbh, to get 100% Adobe RGB at this pricepoint would be miraculous.

The Xrite is actually the calibration device... Screen is actually an AUO panel.

Ahh, ok, oops! ... still, it's the same panel being reviewed?
