Variety, Learning & Movies pack SD channels all fits 16:9...except ch.412 whistling.gif

So that means they are getting HD feed downscaled to SD.

I have registered on the new Astro new beta UI.
Impressive!
A lot of improvement compared to the previous UI.
And oh it seems now I can stream all live channels from Astro directly to my phone.
P.S. Waiting for update on my decoder. Not getting the new UI yet.

Make sure your decoder is compatible.
Must be a silver plate box on the right side.
In other words a WiFi built-in Astro box.
If you are using an older box, you may upgrade it with a small fee.

No point now..as my plan is to update byond with UHD decoder and secondary PVR keep as this.
*
So maybe wait for the 4K decoder.
Maybe around end of June launch.
Plus they are testing UHD after this on next 1.2 beta, maybe the beta users are getting the upgrade first.

Not day to day use.
At least 10Mbps is required for watching On Demand content to buffer and work properly.

For now, the new UI only stream On Demand content, adaptive bit rate streaming, meaning if your Internet is fast, you'll watch it in HD. If slow, then poorer quality, similar to Astro Go.
It does not download and save the On Demand to the hard disk like the previous UI.
So if you have a slow Internet connection (<10Mbps), this may affect your user experience of accessing On Demand content.
*
And also the new UI seems to depend a lot on the internet.
Now all channels are showing their respective logo where previously it is not.
On the EPG and channel scrolling.

I have signed up for the beta programme as well, and my PVR box has been updated to the new beta UI v1.1.
I find that the new beta UI v1.1 does look similar like Android TV. Well, Astro previously did mention that the new UI shall be Android-Linux based.
Even the font has changed from Trebuchet MS to Roboto. Roboto font is commonly used on Android system.
It does look very clean and modern, button designs are bigger, similar like the modern smart TV and boxes would like.
The VOD content suggestions (press home button, and then Catch Up, Movies,...), is so much better compared to the previous UI.
For that, good job, Astro.

As for the adaptive bit rate streaming of the VOD content, the picture quality is very similar to Astro Go. I think Astro use the same video file from Astro Go platform onto Astro STB's On Demand platform. Which in my opinion, it looks bad on TV. The picture quality for On Demand content on previous UI (that requires download and store to hard disk) is much better.

Also, I'm not sure why. When I first use it, the user interaction response time is really bad. Even changing a channel takes 2-3 seconds for the screen to go black and then tune to that channel, way worse than the B.yond HD zapper box (the one that has no clock/channel number display on front panel). And some of my previous older recordings appeared to be missing on My Library. Looks like a software bug, so after I tried restart my Astro PVR box, and reconnect to my WiFi, the user interaction response time has significantly improved and all my previous recordings are back.

But still, the user interaction respond time of the previous UI is more instant and quite realtime. So yeah, do expect the new beta UI is slightly slower to load things.
*
The lag is quite apparent but well it is a beta software.
This should have been expected.
And yeap I think this is powered by Android because I did check from the Astro beta app in My Devices it shows it is using the Linux platform.
And there is a lot of improvent in terms of UI navigation.
The previous UI when watching OD was horrendous.
Now much more appealing to me to watch the content.
And also you get the option of some channels to watch the current live TV from the start, quite a good addition.
But it is still depend on the internet.
And also like what you said, the ABR streaming is not as good as the previous download and watch option.
The quality is a little bit low in terms of video quality.

But overall I am satisfied with the new UI.

Unlikely end of June launch 4K decoder.  Most likely Q4.
*
Maybe yes, maybe not.
But the next step for the beta 1.2 is 4K and cloud DVR, so the beta users might get the first preview of the UHD service.
The beta runs until end of June.
So possibly Astro will offer us first to upgrade to 4K.

HBO GO app is quite nice.
Finally after a few years we have our own app.
Now don’t have to rely on the current Astro GO app.
That app is so confusing.

The 1080p livestream however have some bitrates issue. I mean, it's barely reach 4Mbps (3534 kbps).
*
Yep I did notice that.
I did try to cast Game Night movie to my Android TV this evening, also shows the same problem.
Quite blurry.
I change to my Maxis 4G Mobile also show the same problem.
Maybe the server not optimised yet.
Hope they will fix this later.

Mine's the opposite, STB randomly disconnect and reconnect wifi despite stabil wifi.

And sometimes freeze.
*
Same.
My solution.
Connect directly via Ethernet.
And those random freezes, cannot do anything.
So far report any bugs you found on their beta website.

It seems Astro has removed most Fox channels from the beta app.
I really like that I can watch Fox Movies, Fox and Fox Life on the app.
Now no more.

Argh.. very frustrated with the beta software. Some functions seems to take more steps to complete now. For example, viewing the sypnosis is now a two step thing?! Last time just click info can see already. But now need to press info -> select info then only can view.

Same thing for on demand... last time if I click on the episode, it will jump right into it. But now, it will jump into the "sypnosis" view and then only I can click play.

And seriously, I think they should improve the navigation of the OD titles.. I'm having hard time selecting the episode if the drama contain 600+ episodes. And I can't event sort it! (I need to browse from epi1 to epi6xx every single time!)
*
Did you report it in the website?
There is a reason why there is beta to begin with.
To ask feedback from the customers.
I ald did my part.
I complain all the quirks in the beta software and I really hope they keep improving it.

Well for the app, we have so many updates.
But for the decoder, the latest one I got is 12 June.
So can see they rarely update the decoder software.
But I do hope they fix it before the final release.
The software is still too slow for me.

So means can watch recording everywhere ?
*
Not yet.
And it seems you need to get the new Astro 4K decoder to get cloud recording.
Which the new decoder not launched yet.
Maybe the next Beta 1.2 we can try it.
For now, they only launch the new UI.

Web version of Astro Go now doesn't require plugin and add start over live tv function(which you can start over ongoing live tv program)
*
Finally.
The plugin is so problematic to use.
Maybe they use a better DRM like Netflix, so more plugin needed.

Just found out something new about the new Astro Go ... when we were on Beta App in June, we were able to watch all movies channels like HBO, FOX. But since July, HBO, FOX channels are no longer available on Astro Go (web or app) for copyright purpose. I thought the new Astro Go App was a replica of Astro on my TV where whatever I can watch on my TV, I can watch on my app. Looks like it is not the case now.
*
Maybe that time is beta so not many users.
Plus Fox will not even notice Astro did that.
Now official release have to remove all of that.
But at least we know it is possible to beam all Astro channels to the internet.
And also Unifi did have all Fox channels on their playTV platform, but after a few months they remove it.
Maybe someone at Fox did not like it.
