Yes you're right.
But at the end of the day, who cares?
Is it illegal in the law that Astro at your business place does not show the small square box on bottom right corner, indicating that it is a residential subscription rather than business subscription?
Even if Astro found out, what will they do to you?

Company like Astro don't deserve to pay so much money. They monopoly the pay TV service for long enough already. But it's up to you if you want to go for the proper way by getting business subscription.
*
They will terminate the account..

QUOTE(zeese @ Dec 9 2019, 04:06 PM)
I experience the same thing. After switching to astro ultra, I feel something is not right coz all channels (except uhd channel of course) looks worse to my eyes. I thought it was my own perception, but suddenly, my wife scolded me for changing the decoder. She said all channels now looks so bad (compared to older decoder).
*
What is the display output from the Ultra Box to TV? Is it 2160p?
If yes then for normal SD/HD channels, the box is upscaling the video to 2160p and that might be the reason why it looks blur due to the box have bad upscaling capability.

For those who are interested to try the Android TV app(need to subscribe Sooka VIP TV package first before can login on the Android TV app).

Sooka for Android TV apk >> https://archive.org/details/sooka-android-tv

Not sure why the Sooka for Android TV app still not available on the Playstore, the app should have released by now..

RM84.9/month - 2 device but only one connected TV allowed and no Chromecast or screen mirroring.

Does that mean that Astro is continuing developing their apps for smart TV?
*
QUOTE(joshhd @ Mar 17 2022, 09:31 AM)
It seems to me that they might be working on their smart TV app. But still, if they don't let us login and test it out, there's nothing much to comment much about it.
But I think the UI of the closed test smart TV app is either similar or more trashy than Ultra Box UI.

It says it is for closed beta testers, so I guess only selected Astro staffs or some VIPs get access to it? hmm.gif
*
Actually, they didn't stop the Astro TV app development. Their priorities is to improve and add app support on their existing box.

On the previous Android TV Astro beta program, user need to create 'new' account which is not linked to any astro service/box and then send google account details which is used to logged in on the Android TV device that the user want to use to test the app.

IMO, the TV app is not for existing subscribers or has anything to do with 'Astro Go'. They probably target people who has no interest in existing Astro package(contact) and then release a new package. Maybe something like monthly or half-yearly renewal based what I've observe on their beta program subscription/payment system.

QUOTE(joshhd @ Mar 17 2022, 12:49 PM)
Anyhow, since they didn't make it public, that means the app is likely to be problematic, in my opinion laa..

*
They didn't make the app public because it is possible to distribute the app via Google Play Store to specific users privately unlike webOS and TizenOS where there is no option to make the app private to distribute to closed group testing.

Hmmm... Sounds more like Sooka to me hmm.gif
Maybe Astro can implement some rules like "To use the smart TV app, users must sign up as brand new account ID, and you cannot convert any existing Astro account over". This way, it wouldn't severely affect overall pay TV business?

Yup, it is similar to Sooka but for different group.

QUOTE
I would imagine what if one day if customers could sign up Astro service with the option of "No box, no contract, no installation/activation fee, Internet-only service on an Android TV/smart TV app"?
Just enter email address, password and debit/credit card details to begin, and then select a pack (prices would be the same as 0 month contract option), and you can access Astro channels and its VOD library right away.
Bolded: irrc, the registration process was something like that.

QUOTE
Deduct the first month fee to the debit/credit card on the spot, and then free another 1 month as a "welcome gift"?

Or, one shot pay 6 months (auto renewal) plan, and then free 1 months subscription? Or one shot pay 12 months (auto renewal), and then free 3 months subscription? Like I said, all prices can make it same as 0 month contract option (Example: Primary Pack RM74.99 - 0 month vs RM59.99 - 24 months).
Deduct the money first, and the user can cancel anytime since there's no contract, similar like Netflix.

Yes, similar to how US streaming service offer.
I think Astro should note your suggestions.biggrin.gif

QUOTE
I mean is, why not they open this smart TV app as public beta programme, similar to the previous Ultra Box beta programme?
IMO like I said previously, the app is likely to be problematic/trashy and still not yet fix for dunno what reason.
*
Maybe because they are not planning to release the app yet, which i suspect this is their last option that will be offered to public.

Afaik, there was no complaints on the app UI/UX or the performance other than playback issue on some Android TV device that was not listed in their T&C.

I was in the group that has people joined the beta program. They did share pics and video but unfortunately the media files got deleted. I remember that the app has channel numbers but not sure if it support numeric keymap.

Here's the link if you're interested: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...astro.ultraview

Edit: seems like the link is same as the 2020 beta - as I throw this package name on an APK downloader and it returned a version that existed back at June 2020. Will try to upload the APK to APKMirror once downloaded.
*
It is the same app package but with updated version released on 23 March 2022.

Old app - KSTB/AC20.2.3.0
New app - KSTB/AC22.1.3.0

APK download link for those who are interested: https://archive.org/details/astro-android-tv

APKmirror:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/astro-malaysi...tro-android-tv/

Note:
1. This app will able to sideload on all Android/Google TV but may not function properly on some unsupported device.

Lol, they told you Astro Go quality? Haih...
Seriously, they should at least offer similar video/audio quality like Plug & Play lah...
I have a suggestion...
They can consider make the "Astro Smart TV" app into an Android TV app, so that for those who aren't using smart TV or already been using Android TV box/sticks can just install the app and start watching Astro right away.

Like for smileguy's case, imagine if in the future we can install Astro Smart TV app over Android TV box/sticks, in my opinion, that will be a major breakthrough on Astro.

As for device support, they could do like what many OTT providers been doing, such as making sure the device supports Widevine DRM, and the device is not too low spec or rooted... Or they can make HEVC video playback a mandatory support requirement if they want.

If they want to make the requirements stricter to ensure better overall app performance, they can consider rules like the app will only work on Google/Netflix certified TV boxes or TV sticks (e.g. Xiaomi Mi TV Stick/Mi Box S, Chromecast with Google TV, Realme 4K Smart Google TV stick, Mecool KM2, and others...), therefore those cheapo China-made box shall not run the app properly or at all.

Reference: https://www.androidtv-guide.com/streaming-g...-atv-certified/
Yeah... As long you got an active Astro box, you can add Multiroom Smart TV for RM29.99/month and you must be on Astro new packs.

I think the quality should be similar to plug & play because this is alternative to their Astro Box but of course it also depends on internet performance. Maybe the CS team have not received proper update on this.

Since the app is on Android TV playstore, it means that the requirements is to have certified Android TV which has all the things mentioned(bolded).

IMO, the limited supported device is probably due to deal made with TV brand or they don't want to spend resources to properly support more device. 😅

QUOTE(weareblahs @ Mar 25 2022, 07:43 PM)
Thanks. Will try to upload it to APKMirror as alternate source for this.

Also, if you want to try it, it will tell you to subscribe to the Smart TV multiroom pack.
*
Forgot to mention that i've upload to APK mirror but do upload it again using your account because based on my past experience they might reject mine..👀

Finally my Astro Multiroom(Smart TV) is activate. 🥰

The Android APK is working but you can only registered one Smart TV. Before this I registered for LG C9 TV and I need to de-registered it before I can registered for the Chromecast with Google TV version I install.

The video quality is freaking awesome! It seems better than satellite dish and they even have some 4K UHD show to watch.
It is not the Astro GO quality the 1st CS told me. I cannot screenshot the video quality as it will appear black screen only.

4K UHD Show

Watching Dukun now in UHD. 😁 (the image is black out when screenshot)

Since the content is DRM protected then it will show black screen when screenshot or screen recording(only audio available).
If you don't mind, can you share what is in the settings section.

It seems they improve the player UI compare to previous beta app.
Found some of the old UI image shared by beta tester previously:

From the FAQ, Multiroom(Smart TV) will use one slot of Astro GO but will be given up to 4 slot for limited period.

p/s, APKmirror approve the upload and the link is live now:

I wonder, didn't you guys realise that the overall UI look for the smart TV app is slightly different than the one you see on Ultra/Ulti Box?

I notice the one on smart TV app, compared to Ultra/Ulti Box ones:
- The entire GUI (on-screen texts, logos, buttons) looks much sharper and crisper.

*
In this case, can't do direct comparison because the screenshots shared by @Andrewtst is digital image(render at 1080p) taken by software which have yet to go through device/display compare to astro box which is shown on display after image processing by device and TV.
So the final result will depends on display output settings, android tv device image processing, upscaling, display capability & etc.

Since Android TV(<11) system and app UI is render max at 1080p, it is common to notice a bit blurry UI on some 4K display due to poor upscaling done either by the display(built-in Android TV) or external Android TV device(if the display output is set at 4K).

If you are referring to the new Astro app for multiroom, then you'll need to download the apk file and sideload it.
