Probably 4K via H264.
Note: Astro doesn't have the capital to replace decoders with HEVC support. There are licensing issues with HEVC too. Plus AV1 codec is getting ready. Everyone is adopting wait and see strategy.

Does anyone know how BT and Sky stream 4K UHD? The packages are pretty expensive from what I can see close to £75.

Added I mean the video codec...

With regards to the UHD , I wonder if the quicker and cheaper way for them to hit the initial rollout would be to allow it on smart TV app Astro Go. This way the can control the always present piracy concern as it will not allow for HDMI out to a video capture card and they don't need to invest in any new hardware. Similar to how BBC broadcasted the recent tennis and world cup to their customers in the UK. Of course sky did it differently but there is an option at least. I know LG has the Astro Go app on the webOS platform for sure.

Either you stuck with that, or the one for Android TV one. whistling.gif

Android TV OS also has the Astro go app I believe. But it's a little sluggish.

no, smart tv with androidtv does not have astrogo approved in the playstore.

but... u can sideload it together with a couple of other tricks.

works well, in HD, been using it for some time now.
besides androidtv tv's, i read only the current smart LG models can do astrogo, no other.
*
I wonder if it will be allowed to show the UHD feeds if indeed this is how Astro plans to roll out UHD .

I guess astro never tested the Go app on a Android TV, makes sense.

I meant the Android TV OS is sluggish , I did side load Astro Go into my older Android Box but it was a little difficult to navigate. Will need to pull out the MiBox to compare if it does support but as AVFan indicated looks like not officially supported as yet.

astro has never been known for generosity.

i wud think when they roll out UHD for the decoders, they will charge for it, just like they charge for HD.

then for astrogo, if the subscriber pays for UHD, users of this subscriber's account may get UHD too.

UHD is no big deal as far as speed is concerned - netfllix 4k only requires 25mbps; sky UK, Bein in europe have all gone UHD.

(only rtm and the rest still stuck with SD even after spending/wasting the billions.)
*
Yeah I actually meant that if one is subscribed to UHD service. Still it remains to be seen how they will rollout UHD, whether via a new decoder or via built in smart TV app.

But then need to see how many channel available for UHD quality?
If only 1 channel available for UHD, and still charge separate for UHD 20 buck. Then it's ridiculous already.
*
Very true, however if that channel is meant for UHD broadbast of EPL matches I doubt they can give it for free or at a low price. It depends on their business model for the UHD channels in my opinion.

There are a lot of rants on Astro here for sure. I hv tried to think of what would work and it does seem like there is a general belief that Astro prices are too expensive and if there was competition it would make it so much cheaper and better. However, I don't think it's as simple as that. I think at some point, people would need to think about it as a business as well. But there has to be a common ground and something that works for the majority.

Any news on the UHD screening tonight? Also any ideas how they will implement UHD to homes? Can't seem to get anything anywhere and it's supposed to be revealed on the 12th.

Thanks. Seems like details not fully revealed. I guess if they want to roll out new decoders it will take some time.

Any satellite/cable model's main stay and subscriber advantage is always sports live broadcast. Same in all regions. Sports generates huge revenues, EPL is clear proof. In the US it's NBA/MLB/NFL and MLS. I am sure Astro is no exceptions and I believe the day they lose EPL and other sports broadcasts they will lose huge number of subscribers. Options for movies/TV shows is much more accessible now with Netflix/AmazonPrime etc.

AstroGo app not working on WebOS devices anymore. All good things must come to an end....was a good way to get the benefits of a 2nd decoder with a built in app. I wonder if they will come up with a subscription based app similar to all Smart TV OS as it shd be cheaper at least for them since no additional support for additional hardware.

On another note, any news on the new 4k based SetTop box release?

I saw in their Facebook page that they made it available back but only until 30th September

That sucks. It's really convenient to have it available thru the smart TV OS. I believe BBC and iTV have similar apps in the UK and I wish it is offered even as a paid app as a option to those who don't want the physical 2nd decoder.

it appears astro its doing its best to disallow/discourage use of the astrogo app direct on any smart TV.

besides stopping the app on LG, the sonys and sharps running on AndroidTV are also affected.

the old app was/is fine... but new app version has a serious problem - the live HD channels are jerky, unwatchable.

come 30 Sep, i suspect the old app will be killed off too.

fortunately, the new app works fine on many boxes, incl cheap ones.
*
I guess if all else fails, then it would mean people actually sideloading the new app to android boxes. Does it work well on the Q10 pro?

Would appreciate if someone with the Astro UHD box can confirm that the UHD channel is triggering HDR on ur display as mine does not. Also, what is the software version dated on the set?

Thanks

There is no settings to enable/disable HDR on Ultra Box, so it's likely that it is automatic?

Current software version is Oct 24 2019.

Thanks. I hv the same version and it does not trigger HDR on the UHD channel. Does it trigger HDR on ur set?

Quick note if it has not been published before, the new UHD box sends out YCbCr 4.2.0 BT2020 at 2160/50p and the signal bitrate is 10bits. This comes just under 12Gbps (11.14Gpbs to be exact) on the signal from the HDMI so some older cables might not work. Also can confirm that the signal from UHD channel does not have HDR metadata. The thing is all other channels are also sent out using the BT2020 container (meaning BT709 within the BT2020 container) and I cannot assess for now if its accurate but it does look reasonably ok. I don't see a loss of quality on the HD channels per se compared to the older PVR box, but do notice that the sports channels look better than the other HD channels. The box seems to do a better job with reinterlacing/deinterlacing the HD channels to 50p as there are less interlacing artefacts to my eyes. I will add more once I have had a chance to watch more.

Woah, that's good to know...
I thought they have HDR on their CH 780 now... (Last time they test broadcast their UHD channel in HDR.)
Btw could you share on what tools you use to check these?

I used the HD Fury Vertex to extract all this data.
