Astro To Provide Two Dedicated 4K UHD Channels For UEFA Euro 2020

Now the confusing part is, many news articles says that the channel numbers for the 2 UEFA Euro 2020 is Channel 871 and 872, but in Astro FAQ and T&C file, it stated Channel 781 and 782.
Hah... Who to trust now?  shakehead.gif  rclxub.gif

Well, you’ve got to trust from the original source itself — Astro. News articles sometimes put errata for even the tiniest details of the information like this.

Actually, Ch 871 & Ch 872 are from Radio channel numbers: RTM’s Wai FM & TraXX FM respectively.

Side note, it makes sense that Astro put Ch 781 & 782 besides Ch 780.. because it’s UHD channel section.

Disney Shutting Down 18 Cable Channels In Southeast Asia And Hong Kong From 1 October 2021

Disney is closing 18 channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong starting 1 October 2021. This marks the end of an era for the company that has a huge entertainment supply chain in the region.

Geek Culture understands that employees were informed about the closure earlier today in Singapore.

The 18 channels closing down in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong after more than two decades are entertainment channels Fox, Fox Crime, Fox Life, and FX;
movie channels Fox Action Movies, Fox Family Movies, Fox Movies, and Star Movies China;
sports channel Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2, Fox Sports 3, Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2;
kids channel Disney Channel and Disney Junior;
factual services Nat Geo People and SCM Legend.

The decision to close these 18 channels is so that the company can focus on its direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming model. Only 4 channels made the cut to D2C: Star Chinese Channel, Star Chinese Movies, National Geographic Channel, and Nat Geo Wild.

Whilst the move may not be a shock to many, it leaves some questions for consumers of sports content. Fox’s sports channels include the rights to major sports events including Formula One, Australia Open, U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and French Open. It is unclear what Disney plans to do for its sports consumers, though rumors suggest that the company may be working towards a D2C sports environment to address this issue.

Pay-TV platforms, such as SingTel Mio and Starhub, will have a giant hole to fill in their line-up. Likewise, consumers who subscribe to pay-TV platforms for access to these 18 channels may have to revise their subscription.

With many Disney staff impacted by the closure, the company has come up with a new staffing structure and unfortunately, let some employees go including Singapore-based marketing head Daniel Tan, Asia-Pacific head of marketing for studio marketing Shoba Martin and Tom Batchelor. Batchelor previously held the positions of VP of studio operations, theatrical and Disney+ content localization and live entertainment, and Asia-Pacific VP music Southeast Asia. Disney has yet to disclose how many people will be leaving the company as a result of the closure.

Going forward, Fox Network Group content executive Michael Dick is now put in charge of D2C acquisition for the region as well as channels for Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. Andy Baek has been tipped as head of media networks for Indonesia/Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, with a dual role in direct-to-consumer programming business and Karan Paul, who is currently head of the business transformation has been named head of D2Cbusiness operations.

“As part of The Walt Disney Company’s global effort to pivot towards a D2Cfirst model and further grow our streaming services, the company is consolidating its Media Networks business primarily in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. These efforts will help us align our resources more efficiently and effectively to current and future business needs,” said Disney in a statement announcing the closure to employees earlier this morning.

The company’s D2Cstreaming platform, Disney+, first arrived in Singapore in February this year.

On another news, MOE decided that UPSR is now abolished for good starting this year. What’s the future of Astro Tutor TV UPSR?

Yeah, you see the programme ads is now in 16:9 aspect ratio, because they need HD quality copy to air it on other HD channels during commercial breaks.
Nobody would want to see during commercial break where the advertisement material suddenly appears in SD on a HD channel.
Example during commercial break of Astro Ria HD, and then Astro Tutor TV ads appears in SD quality and in 4:3 aspect ratio... It's kinda potong stim, you know what I mean?biggrin.gif

Right now, what Astro TVIQ/Tutor TV been doing is, they just make 16:9 material to display as "Fit to screen / Remove letterbox" only. The channel UI itself, is actually still in 4:3 aspect ratio.
And they still airs a mixture of newly produced academic programmes (which is in 16:9 already), and also programmes that produced many years ago (which is in 4:3). Below are some examples:

This is how it looks like on your 16:9 TV, when a 16:9 programme airs on Astro Tutor TV UPSR (601)
But you'd realise that the Astro Tutor TV logo on top right corner, is not in the right shape (stretched). That's because the channel UI is still in 4:3.

If you still can't see the difference on the "aspect ratio" of the channel logo, here's a comparison.

This is how it looks like on your 16:9 TV, when a 4:3 programme airs on Astro Tutor TV SPM (603)
That academic programme was produced many years ago, and back then they just don't care about aspect ratio since it is in SD quality, so 4:3 is already the default option for them.

As you can see, the overall picture shape (including Astro Tutor TV logo) is in the correct shape and not being stretched horizontally.

Although the advertisements materials for Astro TVIQ/Tutor TV is in 16:9 now, but the channel ident of those channels still remains the same 4:3 aspect ratio.  sweat.gif

Actually, Disney+ Hotstar Indonesia has some FOX-Star shows, like 9-1-1, Family Guy, AHS, Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds.

In other words, those shows that are currently on FOX, FOX Life, FX, will be available on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia as well. Just don’t expect too much as not all shows are available due to content rights whatsoever. Still can’t get enough? Get VPN and watch Hulu instead.

or is it for njoi? sorry can't remember

That ‘top-up’, I guess that you mean additional RM5 charge for all new & existing Movies Pack customers. But I don’t think Disney+ Hotstar will be offered as a complimentary bundle to NJOI users too.

Hmm, I wonder why ABO Thangathirai (241) and Astro BollyOne (251) isn't affected by this...  hmm.gif

Maybe because Indian channels aren't as many content offerings as Chinese channels?
If those two are ceased as well, got even lesser channels.. for sure Indian customers are angrier than ever.

Hmm that makes ABO Tayangan Hebat kinda redundant... Plus, Astro Citra channel can actually serve similar purpose with it.

Astro Citra & ABO Tayangan Hebat could be merged though.
