Now things changed, because no more Measat 3 satellite...
Ok la, I'm trying to be more "considerate" a bit. 😁

Right now, the HD picture quality on Astro, for me it's "barely acceptable with a heavy heart". Video compression artifacts is there, but I'll try to be more considerate a bit la.

Once the new Measat 3d satellite is up and running next year, and Astro have access to much more satellite bandwidth compared to now, if I don't see improvements in HD picture quality then, I might start to make noise again 🤣🤣🤣🤣

No no, what I mean was people that buy those illegal box and illegal stream. then complain when their stream blur or stutter 🤣

And... Transvision is changing channels again.
I can't upload images here, but I have an attachment of the upcoming channels.

So Transvision has replaced Fox Crime with FMN, which is a telenovela channel partially owned by Sony.
It was exclusive to MNC Vision, but I guess they made a deal to carry the channel as a cross-carriage.

But then, I received this email from them. Looks like Mytoonz is not coming anytime soon, but instead, ShortsTV will replace Nat Geo People's spot in the LCN.
I really want to review all the channels and post my opinions about them.
*
I am still curious about Motor Racing channel. I presume it's an in company channel since I can't find it elsewhere, unlike Eurosport and Horizon Sports

I have to whitelist a number of servers in my adblock DNS it seems. Now it works

Edit: I feel rather sorry for Transvision subscribers tho. Of the three sports replacement channel, two of them being free channel feels like cheating

First time I heard about Distro TV. seems like a provider from India.

Can't even find a Wiki entry of it. I presume it's similar to Pluto TV, altho unlike Pluto can't seem to see who funded it.

Just a random update...
It seems that now whenever you need Astro to send their technician to your house to repair/service, there's 2 options will be given.
user posted image
Source: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=448552...485498241493390

1. Free of charge
But your account will have 12 months contract / must remain active for the next 12 months. Previously is just 6 months, now they've extended it to 12 months  sweat.gif .
If your Astro bill payments is somehow interrupted within that 12 months, they'll impose you RM65 of penalty charge. (Do consider Auto Debit as your Astro bill payment method, for peace of mind)

2. Pay RM65 to the installer
No contract extension on your Astro account whatsoever.

You will get 12 months installation warranty from the day of the technical visit. Additional charges on accessories (e.g. extra cable) may apply.

nani the fuck? Betul betul mau ikat orang masuk kontrak.

Was browsing this where they keep track of Asia Pacific Satelite TV, and noticed that Astro Arena 2 was tested way back in June

16th June 2021
"Measat 3b 91.5E 10852 V "Astro Arena 2" has started on , Videoguard."

22nd June 2021
"Measat 3b 91.5E 10852 V "Astro Arena 2" has left again.

So Astro was already planning for Fox Sports replacement earlier in the year

@joshhd I was wondering, previously if we were to use the new Plug and Play Box and uses our own ISP (not using Astro Broadband), you will loose access to the listed channels.
Since majority of these channels are shutting down since they are under Fox/Disney (Other than NHK and Sky, which will remain unavailable), would the replacement channels be available?

I think my parents have the Astro Ultra box connected to their living room TV downstairs.  My mom wants to watch the same video feed from the Ultra box (and control it also) from her bedroom upstairs.  Can anyone advise how to do this?  Assuming there's no network port in the house.

I think they used to be able to do it with the old astro but that wasnt using a HDMI cable ...

HDMI Splitter + Wireless HDMI Reciever / Sender or 100m HDMI Cable + IR Reciever? I saw someone actually did this as their setup for this.

Or, if you can, add RM50/month for Multiroom, but the disadvantage is the 24-month contract thing.
*

Techmoan did a video about wireless HDMI with his cable TV. You would loose some quality, but you can use the same remote control

Thx guys for the solutions.  Am in a bit of a $$ crunch so currently thinking of not spending so much because the wireless HDMI solutions cost at least RM 500 and the unknown part is whether the signal can be fully received upstairs.  The Astro multiroom is RM 50 x 24 months minimum

Is there a way to reuse back the old RCA wireless transmitter I have?  I am guessing this approach will need a
1. HDMI splitter that can split to HDMI (downstairs TV) + RCA (old transmitter)

Anyone think this will work?

Thx
*
I wonder if the Astro Decoder would output on both HDMI and RCA at the same time. If it does, you won't need a HDMI -> RCA converter.

Regarding this I ady notice long time, I wonder why astro cant makes it in standard.  bangwall.gif
*
It's due to what kind of subs are provided by the network to Astro. Subs are usually PGS (presentation graphic stream), a standard that are used in DVD or Blu Ray where they are images of text instead of actual text. This comes from before there was a Unicode and UTF-8 standard, and it's easier to make images than to have text subtitles that would end up as boxes for people that don't have the correct encoding.

The format of the subtitle is the location of where it would be placed on screen, and the aspect ratio of the subtitle and the aspect ratio of the media. Some of these networks never really upgraded from a decade ago, and keep using 4:3 subtitles in 4:3 aspect ratio, hence why you end up with stretched sub on TV. Some has proper 16:9 subtitles, but still set the ratio to 4:3 so you have the subs being compressed.
Web players like Astro Go usually would OCR these subtitles (convert from image back to text since HTML 5 does not support PGS, usually SRT or WEBVTT) so you would get the correct ratio

If I remember, only VOD used text-based ones. Just now, I go to check the MPEG-DASH manifest of a random Astro channel, and found out they used "dvb_bitmap".

"dvb_bitmap"? I assume that it's "DVB Subtitles", an image-based subtitle format used on broadcasting through DVB systems. Encoding solutions are more difficult than the PGS format that you said, maybe they just converts the PGS to DVB Subtitles?

(Also, I suspect that Astro GO has their own DVB Subtitle decoder or something)
*
I wonder if astro are transcoding it on the fly depending on the device, since PGS is just similar to DVB_Subtitle

https://flussonic.com/doc/live-streaming/co...tles-to-webvtt/
"Such subtitles are supported by some set-top-boxes, some TV sets, and by the VLC media player, but are not supported by iPhone or Android devices"

BBC Player uses this live conversion, since if you watch any of it's on demand videos, you would find that it will have hundreds of VTT files being loaded in the background, each VTT file is just one line of subtitle
user posted image

I needed to make a special script to fetch all these different subtitle files and combine them into one. I presume that the original subtitle is DVB, and the system would convert each images one at a time, leading to multiple text files instead of just one subtitle file

Yes, 1080p, but not satellite quality. Also, if you care about the channel quality, use Satellite / IPTV for installation. As joshhd said before, the stream of the Multicast IPTV one and the Satellite one are the same.

So just now, I found out that Astro GO have a "hidden" 1080p stream not listed on their DASH manifest files. Normally, the MPEG-DASH manifest returns "video-cif-stream-5" as their maximum resolution with 1280x720 25fps, but i just changed the URL a little bit to "video-cif-stream-6" with bigger filesize than the normal segments. Maybe that's the version they use on the Ultra / Ulti box?
*
I presume it's also limited to 25FPS, even on the 1080p stream?

I think if Ultra / Ulti box is normalized among Astro decoders then they can switch most of the HD channels to H265 encoding. Although requires more high-end hardware specs (such as CPU / GPU), but at least it will decrease the bandwidth usage of satellite, therefore bringing higher quality channels.

Astro GO? Most of the desktop mainstream browsers didn't support H265 decoding, only Safari and some Android browsers can do that. So, if Astro migrated to H265, then they have to keep H264 encoding for Astro GO livestreams, or abandon Astro GO as webapp and develop separate client apps for PC, Android devices and iOS devices.

Btw, just curious, about the Astro Android TV App Beta last year, is the quality still identical to the satellite one?
*
HEVC does not actually need expensive hardware per se. Even cheap chipsets can support it right now. The issue is as you said, it also need to support browsers that still uses the Apple HLS standard, that does not support HEVC. FWIW, Malaysia usually only follows whatever they do in the UK/EU, and there only 4K UHD channels are streamed using HEVC (they don't have any choice really). So unless UK/EU changes, we won't be changing either
