http://star-techcentral.com/tech/story.asp...4270&sec=proditSony's first Blu-ray playerWhile high-definition (HD) flatpanel LCD TVs, video camcorders and even HD-capable notebook PCs have been in the market for more than a year, there hasn't been a convenient way to play high-definition content in your living room.
This is set to change, though, with the announcement of the first officially available Blu-ray video player in the local market - the Sony BDP-S1E.
This Blu-ray player plays high-definition 1080p Blu-ray video discs at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080pixels as well as AVCHD-encoded DVDs created from Sony's high-definition camcorders.
This resolution is more than twice the linear resolution provided by DVD movies and will finally put all of the HD-ready LCD TVs in people's homes to good use.
Apart from high-resolution videos, the BDP-S1E is also capable of reproducing uncompressed multi-channel linear PCM digital audio output via digital HDMI outputs for the ultimate audio/video experience.
Additionally, the BDP-S1E also plays regular DVDs, CDs and digital content such as MP3 music and JPEG photos on recordable discs.
The Sony BDP-S1E will be available next month at a suggested retail price of RM4,999.
As for actual off-the-shelf content, Sony Malaysia representatives have revealed that discussions with local film/movie distributors are taking place to bring Blu-ray titles into the country.
Unfortunately, exact details are not available yet.
However, the good news for impatient movie buffs is that Malaysia shares the same Blu-ray movie region as the United States. This means you can import English-language discs from there even if they aren't available locally.
