As for me, I prefer Magento CMS. It's written in PHP, so you can easily add new features. Also it has many advantages as different magento plugins and extensions: custom product designer, product review, magento 2 product feed extension etc. Very convenient. I've use both Magento and Shopify as part of my job implementing it, here's my summary.
Go for Magento if: + You're a developer, wants flexible and advance shopping features + Have lots of money/budget for high performance web hosting services/server side that have bigger memory and processor especially handling query. + Putting lots of products inventory. + Advance and full control of the platform eg: backup/migration.
Go for Shopify if: + If you're want fast setup an online store + Less codings work. + Cheap and less demanding on resources on bandwidth and processing on server side. + Easy access to install plugin/add and easy customization on store front appearance. + Easy support if have problem. + Have simple product inventory/presentation.
Summary *If you have skills to maintain, huge money for high performance web hosting and total control of CMS platform = Magento
*Else if you're just end user, have money for plugin add-on (can't code), easy simple administration and short term solution = Shopify
