Why compare 2 cars of different segment and price range? If money not a consideration of course Passat 1.8 is a better car.

If you are just considering which is a better car take the Passat 1.8. It is D-segment and a better car overall compared to Civic. But if you want to put maintenance cost and resale value into consideration then everything is muddied.

if you're driving around the city 80% of the time then civic would be a more practical car

passat is a big car and wont be so syiok driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic 5 days a week

it is better to have a zippy and agile car to slither through the city traffic

Civic is also not bad on long distance driving. The rear is quite roomy!

I drive a Passat, and yes in terms of drivability, you won't regret... of course this only applies to the 95% the time when the car is not in the workshop...

Seems like TS is fixated with going with the Passat B8. Just go on with it lah

Just keep in mind the trade off between the fun side (driving pleasure) and not-so-fun side (reliability, maintenance time-bomb)

Civic looks like a car you will be taking towards drag racing and fast and furious zig-zag drives on the roads whereas the Passat looks like one you'll be driving to a 5-star hotel to pick up guests.

The front of the Civic looks ok but I agree with the previous poster that the rear looks quite out of shape especially the lights which look a bit robotic. It made the car look like one that's built for racing. I have a friend here who used to own a Honda race car (Mugen-tuned or something like that). Once I followed his car, and I was trailing his car from behind I could hear a very loud engine or exhaust sound when his car accelerated away in just few seconds leaving my car far behind when he was instigated by another Honda Civic car who just flew past on the right lane. The Honda logo of that car was red in colour so I think it may be a Type-R or something. The two Honda cars which included my friend's racing car was like racing against each other. Really funny when I saw that action from behind.

But when going over road bumps, I just laughed when I saw my friend's car going very very slowly and not in straight line but slanted when his car was tackling the road bump. I think his car was setup to have a very low ground clearance.

Sorry, off topic as I just thought of this friend who used to own this powerful Honda car.

Dry clutch Volkswagen is a no no unless you opt for the Passat 2.0L with the Golf GTI engine and wet clutch gearbox.

Parts availability for Honda is everywhere, but definitely not for Volkswagen.

In terms of comfort, definitely the Passat wins by miles, there is just no contest. My elderly parents also complain the rear seat of the Civic FC is very low though spacious. Older people need to put more effort to get in and out of the car.

Boot space wise, Passat wins by far. Civic has a rear stabilizer bar right behind the rear seat. That's why cannot fold down the rear seat.

My friend brother and my sister husband both bought a second hand Passat for around 65k to 70k. Both also less than 3 years on the road.

It definitely more comfortable than Civic. And the Civic seating position is quite difficult for old people and pregnant lady.
