Malay is short for Malaysian. I learnt this during my exchange with few non-Malaysians. Does anyone get offended for being called a Malay? Especially the Chinese, Indian, Iban or other non-Malays?
Anyway to answer TS’ question, they get offended when you call them Indon because they think it as a racial slur. Same like Indians got offended when Chinese call them Keling, when it is memang the name for Indian in Hokkien and Cantonese dialect. Why get offended by a harmless name? Did they know Keling came from the great Keling Empire? They also think we should either call them Indonesian or if must be short, Indo will do.
