I had fair share of experience improving stuff from overseas for my personal usage/consumption.

The way customs tax works is this:

(Item cost + shipping cost) x 6% gst.

If the currency of item bought is in USD or any other foreign currency, custom will convert it to MYR using rate that's available to them on the day you make the custom clearance. Usually all items if you use DHL, ups, FedEx etc. will pass thru customs office at klia nearby the old LCCT. Large box or heavy item usually will get customs attention and detained for further inspection. You'll get notification from Pos Malaysia that there is item detained at customs klia and they will make an offer to you if you wanna use their service to clear the item.

If you don't want, go there yourself and proceed with the clearance. It's very simple and won't take whole day to do it.

But beware, if you try to escape the 6% Gst by lowering the invoice value provided the seller prior to shipment from the origin, that's an offence and punishable. The customs can catch for offence made up to 6 yrs prior.

Good luck!
