I just did my own for the first time a few days ago.

A lot of insurance companies provide instant online quotations on their websites, and you can directly purchase there as well, usually with a 10% discount. The pricing is fairly standard across the various companies, but it may have some variation based on what is the insured value for your vehicle. (Eg: Etiqa values it at 47k, AIG values it at 45k, hence AIG's insurance premium would be slightly cheaper.)
When you are getting a quotation for your insurance, you can also select various add-ons for your policy, such as windscreen protection, loss of use, car key replacement, etc. Usually, if you end up claiming these add-ons, they won't affect your NCD.
If you renew your insurance online, you can directly pay online and will receive the policy within a short time. (Mine was a few minutes)

As a value-added service, insurance companies also offer road tax renewal together with your insurance renewal. From what I saw, the road tax renewal is usually handled by MyEG and will be delivered to you within a few days. Some companies are kind enough to give you free delivery for the road tax, and only charge you the money for the road tax.
